    Don’t know why everyone seems scared of p38’s and eas issues. Not a lot to go wrong with them, and when they do go wrong it’s usually a fairly easy fix! The same with other systems on the p38, once the shoddy maintenance/repairs of previous owners have been rectified, they are surprisingly reliable!

      yeah , same as any other older / classic vehicle .. once you correct all the previous bodges it's usually pretty easy to keep the vehicle in good order

      The mechanical department is rather easygoing to work with, the real troublemakers are the ecus. If one or two are broken could be a real headcache.

    Good informative service, but I wouldn't recommend vaseline on rubber o rings. I used it on a power washer o ring which didn't seat properly. I dismantled it again and discovered that the vaseline was softening the outer surface of the o ring. I rubbed it off, and used silicone spray instead.

    Nice one Sam!
    I've actually got 3 compressors and 2 valve blocks in my parts bin from when I had my p38. Need to get them sold.
    Top tip for the airlines. Use a pencil sharpener on the end to chamfer the ends ever so slightly - this makes it a lot less likely to tear the orings when you push them in to the collets and allows for an easier refit and seal 👍
    Aside from that, don't forget to replace the dryer and ensure the line under it is well sealed - it's a common leak point that very few people check!

      Good tips! My o rings were all pretty well lubed with Vaseline but it still took a good shove to get them in.

    That video was brilliant. You took your time and went through the valve block step by step which has made me realise that while I rebuilt mine I have put one of those 3 small valves for the non-return valve in backwards. Great video Im now a subscriber

    Great work Sam, in depth as always 👍 fingers crossed for the test! Sure it will be fine. Took the L322 round the forest drive at Beaulieu last week at Simply LR. Wasn't extreme, but Such a capable vehicle! Was good fun.

    Good video. I’ve got the suspension to do on the Panda, nothing that fancy though, just a couple of leaf springs and a pair of shocks.

      @@SamsMotors I'm hoping to never have to take a ride in it again. I have tried driving it (as I can easily drive the manual tractor) but there just ain't enough room behind the steering wheel.

    Fascinating video. It gives hope that I might actually get my EAS back again. I have my '99 HSA on springs at the moment, thinking it would be too hard to restore the EAS. It seems I may have overestimated the difficulty in rebuilding these parts. I worry a little about the lines going into the block though, how do they stay seated in there? If I did this, I would obviously have to get all new bags, which I would have professionally installed. Maybe I will make this a winter project . Thank you!

    I did my EAS valve block but not the compressor, finicky but not super hard as long as you have clean area and keep things organized.

    I see the p38 repair is going well.
    By the way, I received an email from BRITCAR that BEARMACH is no longer available, BRITPARTS is no longer retailing, and I live in Japan, so even one less supplier is a problem for me to get parts.

    Sam’s way, it looks like the rebuild kit cost about $50 and he did the labor himself. My way, I paid over $1,100 for a new compressor and 4 hours labor to remove and replace. Sam’s way is way better! Awesome video!

      My Range Rover is a L322, and I’m not too sure how different the EAS compressor is to the P38. The 4 hours labor is a quote straight from my local LR dealer. I did use my local LR Specialist, which has a much lower labor rate, but still not cheap.

    Nice to have a How to video about this job! I have taken over a 96 P38, which has had the air suspension removed. I have just come across a 97 P38 with air suspension failure, and the facelift to the newer Rang Rover. It's probably a pure bastard, so it will be interesting to see how it's been executed. Fun to follow channels that fix up and use older 4x4s! Started following your channel :)

    Having spent some time rebuilding my compressor, including half an hour realigning the grub screw holding the piston in place..... which you didn`t show.... I found that the bearing at the end of the electric had destroyed its self..... So I gave up and got a recon exchange unit... But having seen you work on the valve block I feel I could manage it... If needed.... :-)))

    Hi , nice work on the RR , built for adventure of those that are cash rich time short , as most of us are cash short and time rich , get your spanners out , that,s what they tell you in a boat yard if running a sun seeker , with twin diesels . No wonder the domestic goddess has crochet hooks , I bet she could tell some yarns .🤔 Over all seeing it,s age and miles covered , no wonder people have bad tails to tell , if cash short and no idea of how to use a spanner ,well in the 1960.s no spanners , it would just rusted away , if your Dad had none . We just had a pride in keeping things going , mainly to earn a living and the freedom to go where you wanted at any time . 😉 You may inspire me to buy one .

      I think the reason for me becoming interested in doing my own auto work was through a hatred of paying someone else to do a half-arsed job 😂.
      And at least if I've done it and it goes wrong, I can learn how to improve and do it right next time. With a mechanic, you usually end up paying twice if they make a mistake.

    I stupidly passed on a 2000 p38 with 64,000 miles for $4,000. That was last year. Ever since then, I’ve been scouring online to find one. Been a dream car of mine for 20 years.

      Ouch. Not very many around with that kind of mileage nowadays - I'd consider anything under 150k as "low"!

      @@SamsMotors had a couple of freelanders, a D2, td5 110 and a D3. Enjoyed the Audi but its only needed discs and pads, services and a swirl flap linkage repair. How boring 😴 time to scratch the range rover itch I think 🤔

    Great video! My piston doesn't want to come out after removing the grub screw! Seems to be stuck on the shaft........any advice on a safe way of getting it off? Tried the usual leverage with screwdriver, etc., but don't want to damage counter-weight or piston!

    Thank you very much for this fantastic video, thanks to this I have not thrown my P38 to the scrapyard. I have repaired everything as you illustrate in the video and I have a real, comfortable, safe and enjoyable to drive Range Rover again.
    I have two P38's (one is the donor) and I am addicted to this car. The suspension works very well and the heights are correct, except when I turn off the engine, the car lowers in a few minutes. Al on, it goes up really fast. Before, I could stand for days and not come down, so I think the air lines and the balls are fine.
    Have I installed the discharge valve incorrectly? If you can tell me what it is or know of another problem, I would ask you to reply to this message. I live in Lanzarote and here nobody repairs these cars. Eternally grateful.

    You are correct the black cylinder is a filtration kit im trying to opening it but struggling, 4 times ive taken out my whole syspension unit im stresses to death

      Yes you should be able to change the desiccant in the dryer for fresh stuff.

    I had my 1995 land rover 4.00 SE, sit for 3 years, just decided to drive it now, went 25 miles and air suspension flualt light comes on and the car starts to bounce ever time I run over a bump. It seems like the compressor is not getting power to it, check all the fuses and relays an they are good, (I disconnected the wires to compressor and provide power directly to it and it works)

    I have a very similar dunlop setup like this on my renault master but has a smaller block and only 4 solenoid valve, 3 with green wires and 1 with blue wires (exhaust soleniod valve)
    I opened mine up and cleaned everything including a blocked hole in the exhaust solenoid amature where the spring and plunger sits, i tested all solenoids with a 12v battery all opened and closed.
    I replaced all seals in compressor compressor works great now.
    Checked rear sensor with live data seem to be working on up an down movement.
    I have 3 errors on diagnostic
    *exhaust solenoid valve circuit
    *left hand cushion solenoid valve circuit
    *RLH height sensor open circuit
    Ive order 1 exhaust solenoid coil
    1 left hand cushion solenoid coil
    Not sure though if the coils are the issue because when i bench tested they seem to work.
    Another thing which is confusing me, in my setup there is a black tube shape cylinder with 2 pipes that come out an go into the block on the exhaust solenoid side it has pressure numbers stamped on it what is it?
    Hope you can help.

      Could the black cylinder be an air dryer? I know the P38 has one. Your faults sound like they should be fixed with new solenoids, plus a new height sensor - as long as all the wiring is sound between the control unit and the sensor.

      @@SamsMotors yes i think you right about the dryer. soleniod valves or solenoid coils?,
      I checked the coils and they activated the armatures/plungers up an down, maybe the o-rinxmg seals have gone?.
      The height sensor shows very similar values on both sides and reads small incriments in live data when moved, it also cuts out sequence when highered or lowered to much just like the rear right sensor, would you still change the sensor?.

      @@SamsMotors haha i know but theres so many upgrades out there now for landrover range rover it be a good project to do like a 04 range rover drop the GM gear box out of it and put a zf out a 08 in to it drop the air and put shocks and so on

    Would you consider some performance mods to get a bit more power out of the engine? I found the 2.5 lump a bit dangerous pulling out at junctions.

      They aren't the quickest. I will see how it feels when fully serviced up and importantly, with the gearbox serviced, then decide if I want to eek a bit more from her.

    As with most car parts….do not be tempted to buy cheap compressors or spares from China…wasting your money. I found that a small open ended spanner works well to push in collets. I was in the process of changing them to stainless types in my Range Rover Sport before I sold it. The compressors are supposed to be serviced every 40k or thereabouts.
