    I think the stone is green jasper, which can be found in Angus. Could the stone maybe have been used in parchment making? Stones were used to rub pastes into the parchment to smooth and whiten it.

    First time viewing your channel. I'm impressed. The piece of copper/brass with the writing on it is a zipper pull, I think. The silver band is very interesting. As you know, silversmithing is highly regulated. That's why everything has a smith's mark. Taxes paid, trademark entered, etc. As a tinsmith, I know that when sheet metal is cut with shears it naturally will roll up like that. I think it is possible that someone was altering or reworking a piece and needed to remove the original smiths mark. That scrap was headed for the crucible. Thanks. Cheers.

    G’day John. That writing appears to be James Yates, a very large pewter manufacturing firm in the 19th and early 20thC. Buggered if I know what it is. Must be one of there more obscure items. The bottom word might be warranted, or patented? I wonder if your old stone might be for burnishing vellum parchment?? It has that personal look to it. If so, presumably medieval, maybe early medieval. A really nice find. Congrats, Wayne

    The stone with the cross looks like it could be made from Bloodstone with the green hue to it and the small red/orange markings. There is a small outcrop of bloodstone on the Isle of Rum in the Inner Hebridese, if my memory serves me right I believe all other bloodstone is found very far from the UK.

      If the stone is rare for Scotland then there is a chance it is a piece from the Holy Land, or at least claimed as such. Pieces of stone, or wood or water or anything really, from the Holy Land were very popular Christian souvenirs in the middle ages, especially around about the time of the Crusades when lots of people were coming and going from Europe.

    Thank you so much for your great videos and wonderful history. I have what is probably a really stupid question from a non-detector but a magpie prone to pick the odd relic. Why so many coins? I would think that coins would be the last thing to become "lost" regardless of the time period. Were coins not used as payment for goods? Maybe there was more bartering and trading for goods? I understand the bullets and musket balls in the fields but money??? Thanks in advance for any explanation.

    • @thescottishdetectorist
      @thescottishdetectorist  Před rokem +2

      Thanks Paula. No such thing as a stupid question!!
      These fields were intensively farmed for centuries. There’s old medieval ploughing going back to the 1300/1400’s and until the advent of tractors and mechanised farming it was all done by hand including the harvest which could have involved 100’s of people. People often had a few coins on their pockets and bending up and kneeling down they occasionally dropped out. Stand on a coin and it’s gone forever…. At least until I come along!!
      Some days on some of the fields we’ve had 20+ coins in a session!!

But, people regularly following those in wagons seemed to perpetually have bits falling of the wagons, oxen losing shoes, shells from hunting for the pot from the wagon seat, and liquour empties being tossed. Didn't find any coins. That piece of mixed cuprous and ferrous metals with the stamped lettering, could that bit you read as "Trois" be "Tho's," which is a common 19th century abbreviation for "Thomas?" If that's possible, the second word might be the surname "Watts." Recent historical material materials can be as archaeologically puzzling as older objects. Take it from a retired archaeologist who has worked on everything from the late Pleistocene to WW II era sites in the US.

    • @thescottishdetectorist
      @thescottishdetectorist  Před rokem +1

      Good morning. Glad you enjoyed the video. My detector is an XP DEUS II (£1300) and prior to that I had an XP Goldmaxx Power v4 (£250 off eBay second hand)
      The other guys use an XP Deus II, a Goldmaxx Power and a Garrett ATPro International.
      It’s important you get a machine that meets your needs. Buying new £450/500 or above should be a minimum spend. Second hand there are some good machines out there but be careful they are in full working order.
      Don’t get a machine that’s too complex for you. I used to have a White DFX and you needed a computing degree to fine tune it. Look for any clubs in your area, find out what machines they use as you’d be on similar soils.
      Lastly email or call Regtons Metal detectors for advice. They’ll let me know what machine might suit you.
      Happy hunting!!!

      @The Scottish Detectorist it's just a lot of tonsure stones have been found around medieval monastic sites apparently back then the tonsure was thought to be more triangular in shape rather than round. I did read a paper online a few years back but typically can't find it now amd it did have a photo of a similar stone.

    When you have an item with an inscription that’s hard to read, put a piece of paper over it and lightly rub a pencil over it until the image is visible. You should be able to read it more easily.
