Useful little tutorial! Just be careful you don't spill any of the vinegar/rust liquid on leather items. As i recall, rust and vinegar is a regularly-used method for dyeing leather black...

Just a tip Ive done this several times first time my jar exploded :(
Using a glass jar is fine also screwing lid on to agitate it is fine but unscrew the lid immediately thereafter
Its the gas produced from the Rust v Vinegar building up in the jar causes the glass to explode :(
Even a plastic bottle could explode! Once agitated unscrew the lid,lay it on top if you like with a gap but don't leave it screwed on :(

Apple cynder vinegar or cooking vinegar?

Use the strong white (transparent) alhohol based vinegar for this job , the cyder is way to soft to remove the rust .

Hey quick couple questions! Do you have to neutralize the acidity of the Vinegar after you dried the parts?
If so, and you used say baking soda, would it be best to mix baking soda and water and quickly dunk these parts in the solution and wipe them dry again?
Or simply toss these parts in dry baking soda and then wiping them off?

I made a solution of baking soda water, wiped it off and then sprayed WD-40 on the screws. I then polished the saddles and everything else…. Nothing seems to be deteriorating or rusting thus far 8 months later.

applying wd40 let sit for 5mine, before giving them a vinegar bath would have sped up the rust shedding. probably down to an hour
wd40 gets under the corrosion and isolates the particles and fragments in the oil
