  • In January 2024, southern New England saw their first widespread significant snowfall in over a year (the previous winter did not produce much if any accumulating snow). The day after the storm, I ventured out to Shirley, MA where they received 10-12 inches of snow to capture some snowy train scenes. I chose Shirley because it is located along a busy freight corridor and also part of the outer segment of the MBTA's Fitchburg Line, meaning I would hopefully have a nice variety of trains. I complemented doing the Northeast Corridor, but Boston and points south received significantly less snow than the northwestern communities.
I was at Shirley for approximately 2 hours, and during that time I saw two MBTA Commuter Rail Trains, one Norfolk Southern Intermodal Train, and also a work train carrying fiber optic cables (they've been doing a lot of signal improvement work along this line). The NS Train was heading west and most likely was bound for Mechanicville Yard in upstate New York north of Albany, or possibly could've been headed for Selkirk for interchange with CSX. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a video of this train passing, as for some unknown reason the train was running on the left side, and the station platform is also on the left side, so the blowing snow kicked up by the train caused the camera to loose focus.
The original B&M Depot at Shirley is long gone, but the station does feature a shelter structure that closely replicates the design of the original depot, including a name sign tablet (which was covered in snow and not visible when I was here). Sadly, repeated vandalism has resulted in all of the windows being broken out, so the structure doesn't really provide much shelter from the elements anymore, but it's still a cute little thing regardless.
