In my college years, it was nice to have a conversation, coffee and cigarettes... you me and $5 bucks. Now at 42 years old, I dont smoke, dont drink coffee and rarely have interesting conversations lol. I
still only have $5 bucks.
Dude... now pack o' smokes costs over $10...and a coffee is $3-$4 ... i dont do either and i barely live pay check to pay check.
Im 46 btw.
Those were the times... Good times... And I'm only 30, but I know those days were certainly the best... Better than today..
So true. I miss smoking and the conversations that came with it. It’s funny we’re all giving our ages. I’m 42.
42! In my early 20s, I didn’t encourage anyone to smoke with me. I totally understood who didn’t want to and I had respect for it. But the people or dates that shared a cigarette with that second drink. That final coffee late into wee hours? We always seemed to connect, and lived in the moment better. This guy showed up to our second “date” (a party we both knew we’d be at) with my obscure brand of menthol cigarettes already in his pocket and a spare jacket in the car in case we took off to have a coffee, late into the night after the party. I married that guy. I don’t smoke anymore but occasionally I smell one waft from the garage when he’s working on his car. It’s nice.
Every time I hear the word doily I think of this scene. 😂
Funny how the scene illustrates how attitudes have shifted in the past 20 years. Back then we were drooling over jealous Ethan and now we're looking back and seeing how immature he was. Don't fet me wrong thougy, Ethan played the hell out of the role as is still hot af!
Yep. Both actors did a great job in this scene ❤
i mean Im 19, and I just watched this movie, as i was watching it I though Ethan was hot but a walking red flag, but when I think back on the movie he's far more swoon worthy despite, or even perhaps because of his toxicity.
Troy thought she looked nice. He didn't like that she dressed up for Michael so he tried to put her down.
Yeah he's just jealous
@@ldoeph2332 Jealousy brings out the worst in everybody !! 😔
Yeah, he's negging her. It's scummy and pathetic.
@@tayladunn7490 jealousy is such a silly, negative, childish emotion. And so often caused by lack of effort! If people actually went for what they wanted, and treated others as they deserve to be treated, they'd be jealous a lot less often. I admit I'm often extremely envious of other people, but never jealous.
He was jealous, but he also knew the real her would not dress that way.
wHaT’S yOuR GLITCH 😂😂😂😂😂😂
“ I think I know what she needs in a way you never will.”
Damn, and after they walked out of the apartment, that look on Troys face!! Couldn’t imagine how he felt !! 🥺
drops mic***
I still don’t know what that means, I assumed he meant sexually like Troy will never be able to “go there” with her” idk
Based on this & this scene only, Ben Stiller is the nice guy. Even though he's kind of square, he's the nicer guy. I'm only going by this scene. I know things change later in the film. Good writing, acting & directing. Probably some of Stiller's best acting!
This is funny jaja
Declan50
And some of his best directing
yeah you missed the part where he was mocking lelaina for making $400 a week
@@fredrezfield1629 and the part where he completely wrecked her project just for a few bucks
@@fredrezfield1629 well he was dead wrong wasn’t he lmao
I actually like Ben Stiller's character better in this scene lol. He seems more serious and grounded.
He wasn't right for her, she wasn't in love with him.
yes he is also short unattractive
nothing cool or interesting about him either
did you miss the part he was mocking her for making $400 a week?
he didn't give a f about her
well i should think so he was like 8 years older than them
no not in the movie they were supposed to be 23 @@arialifeless yuppy head cheasball
he is the reason why cliff-notes were invented!!
He's just jealous.. that's it and he can't say it out loud.
lol I love Ben's character in this scene. I thought the "Buddha on a mountain" speech was a part of this scene, that's weird.. my favorite part.
I seriously think that Ben Stiller would be great as a bad guy or a villain in a dramatic role or in a suspense/thriller.
His role in Permanent Midnight was excellent and a bit like you described
wow she is so beautiful
interesting, at 42, looking back on this clip now, hawks character, Troy, total ass. im sure he made something on his life. Totally agreed what Stiller's character, Michael said now. now seeing more and more women i went to HS with, now coming for the guys that stayed on track. that slacker, laid back life was cool for 2 summers at most. we all need to grow up at some point.
Agreed, troy was a voice for the undecided. At this age we think what on earth did she see in him, back then it was like how could she resist him? Lol big difference at 42 and 24.
At least he enjoyed his youth.
Very true, class 91', no one would have continued a lifestyle like that, even after graduation. After grad school in 1996, I did everything to find a job. I would never have bummed around on a couch playing a guitar...
Nope, I liked troy then, and still prefer him now, at 48 years old lol
@@cosmic4795 Same. He was smart as hell and had a lot of passion and he refused to conform. He just lacked motivation.
dating in the 90s, it really was like this sometimes lol
I wish Ben ended up with Janeane in this movie. Their chemistry was good. Winona and Ethan also have a good chemistry. I wish they would make another movie together.
true
Im with Stiller on this one.W.R looks great in this!
Ben Stiller is the man in this scene.
biggest loser more like it
You could never build a life with Troy.
quiet the opposite Troy is attractive he is intellectually stimulating he is spontaneous Lelaina wouldn't be looking for money she is the cool girl a cool girl who is looking for NOT EVERYTHING in a man but limited number of attributes in a man
"You don't know what she needs"
The problem I had with this film is I don't really like any of the characters. They also are way too insecure for their age. This is 12 year old bullshit.
gen x, the first generation to never grow up, or maybe that's the boomers?
You were totally secure at 22 or 23????
@@nenabunena gen x for sure

She wants a man who can define Ironic right off the bat without thinking.
Even as the target audience of this movie, I always thought Troy was an overwrought joke, the exact opposite of what the writers wanted everyone to think about him.
No. They wrote him as a cool guy that we can like and admire in a way but they also wrote him as a self-righteous childish guy, and they weren't trying to hide it. Many scenes show/point out his faults; Such as the "he stole a Snickers bar.." scene and especially "the world doesn't owe you any favors" scene. There are many instances throughout the film.
the part of the line "more than you ever will" is so poignant because the ethan h chracter knows it's true like a life sentence in jail.
What do you mean?, Ben's charecter doesn't have the slightest idea about what she needs, and the movie shows that.
Ben Stiller was so good in this. "Intelligence quotations or whatever"
K Linda I heard zoolander when he said that
I have seen quite a few negative comments about Troy and I would like to share my opinion. Don't forget that he is very young, just out of college, afraid of the future and in denial that he needs to grow up. Many young adults go through this stage. On top of that he needs to face and accept the reality that his father is dying, with all the consequences that this brings and all the philosophical questions about life and what it really matters. He has his father's example working in a job he probably disliked all his life to just then die, so he doesn't want to end up like that, he wants his life to have meaning but he doesn't know how, he knows he likes music but he is not taking it too seriously, probably because of society misconceptions, so he is just wasting his time around trying to deal with all this.. he has been in love with Lelaine for years, he knows it but as often happens when you are in love with your best friend, he doesn't bring that up, for fear of rejection or for fear of ruining the friendship. Lelaine has probably subtly rejected him in the past already, at the beginning of the film she jokes about why they never got involved, hinting that is Troy's fault somehow, this kind of behaviour has probably discouraged Troy from opening up about the way he feels.. she is even opposing at him moving him telling everyone how lame he is.. when Lelaine begins to go out with Mike, you can tell straightaway that he is gelous and worried that he might lose Lelaine, he asks who is Mike and he tries to be awkward with him. When he bumps into her and Mike making out, he is obviously upset, so he is mean to her.. she confronts him askibg to speak up but in the heat of the moment he doesn't want to give her the satisfaction.. when she is down he tries to cheer her up, he then finds the courage to kiss her and he tells her that he wants their relationship to evolve (from just friends to a couple) but her rejects him again.. he then does the only thing he can do.. be around her is too painful so he avoids her.. then when she is down again, again he is there for her and they spend the night together.. the morning after he panics, is not sure is good enough for her, he knows she has expectations and he runs away, but at the bar he is not denying that he acted like a jerk and he is honest to her, he does want them to be together but Lelaine is just too annoyed rejecting him again.. so he is mean again, then his father dies, and he has to comes to terms with reality, he gets back and without expecting anything he just wants things to be clear between him and Lelaine. Mike he is a good man, but he is just the safe choice, Lelaine is not in love with him, she goes out with him because society makes her believe he is a more suitable candidate as he has a job, he has a car etc.. but rationalizing is not how you find love.. love is raw and unpredictable and although Mike has a lot to offer, Troy gets Lelaine in a way Mike will never be able to..
ladymidnight80 totally agree with you. This was my whole thinking all along. So I was surprised to see a lot of negative comments about Troy and I didn't understand why.
@@xxkate15xx When I was younger I was blown away by Troy - cool, intelligent guy - but later on I realized he as a jerk, immature and so pretentious. But that's how most young d people are anyway. But Troy was the poster child for these kinds. But Troy and Lelaina were on the same wavelength and probably were more better matched but Michael was more of an adult but wasnt really into the things Troy and Lelaina were into.
You are saying that on every clip of this movie on CZcams
@@kyliefan7489 and so?
Very well said. I agree. ❤
Yeah....from a teen perspective, Ethan Hawke may have been the right choice, with his anti-establishment edginess. But fast forward a 15 years, and you know she probably made the wrong decision. Ethan Hawke's character is probably dodging child support bills.
Economic slavery was never the thing to go with, no matter how attractive it is to people.

sooooooo many things going on in this scene, amazing... but watching it at 42 is definitely different from watching at like 17 or however old I was when it came out lol
I thought the movie coulda ended with either guy??
So I'm kind of Stiller's side here. Not sure if I'm supposed to be, though, because the movie seems to want me to root for whatshishipstername....
That's one of the biggest problems of this film. We're supposed to dig Ethan's "too cool for this planet" attitude and root for him, but we don't. The character comes across as a smug, self centered, know it all prick. Stiller's character is a much nicer, more grounded guy.
@@GoblinGirl I disagree, Mike is so boring, I always preferred troy
Cosmic girl Troy is not a hipster, he is an intelligent, complicated honest human being.
Damn, he mic dropped Troy at the end !! You can tell Lelaina genuinely felt bad for him as her and Michael were leaving. Even Troy was being mean!! 😮🥺
Ethan Hawke 😍 beautiful man.
Have you seen him recently in Moon Knight…? (!!!). 😂
I can relate to Troy a little bit in this scene because I've been in a similar scenario. Troy may not be as wealthy as Michael & may come across as too intense at times, but if a guy really likes you & cares about how you feel, he'll adjust his temperature. :) It's not impossible for him to do that. It's the guys who don't care about how you feel or that they are hurting you or ignore you for weeks on end that are worse. They have no temperature because they are so cold.
Ugh this movie is so real
I don't understand people who say Ben Stiller was a better match. Obviously Ethan Hawke was the douche that would make for a very toxic partner, but Stiller was weirdly possessive of her in this scene and kind of escalated the situation. He could've just left after Hawke called her doily and asked Winona Ryder 'You know, what's up with your friend? He kind of seems like a jerk.' Ben Stiller's character was cute but not the perfect match. His idolization of her clouded the fact that he only knew her superficially. Besides, Winona's character did not have the emotional maturity to be in a relationship. I mean, their meet cute was precluded by her almost setting his car on fire by flagrantly tossing out a lit cigarette! Morbidly funny, but not romantic.
Possesive? He was just defending her.
Víctor Carcuro I agree
Jamila Brown yea I (still) think they were both douches just in different ways so I didn’t really understand what the movie was trying to say with that whole thing
We all have our own ways of indulging in some r&r☺️
Troy was being a jerk and Ben was just doing the normal thing of defending Winona.
I know he cried that night
Yeah..that last line tho. Savage!
Umm no. That night he literally bangs Lainey. Perhaps you should watch the film again.
That last line tho
I know right !! That look on Troy’s face after they leave saids it all. He knew Micheal was basically calling him a loser. Kinda felt bad for him in that scene and when he came back and apologized to Lelaina about his behavior!!
He who humbles himself will be made great..
Like where we are with the Doctor Martin Luther King junior National Holiday..
What Lelaina realized later in the film is that Michael was trying to mold and shape her into somebody and something else that she was not. Troy liked her and loved her for who and what she was. He didn't want to change her. When she criticized him and gave him a hard time for some of the stupid things he said and did, Troy may not have liked it, but he loved her for being honest with him because he knows that she cared about him.
@Pesto Patagonia it should have ended with all 3 of them in their new paths, seems like the director wanted the audience to feel happy with troy and lelaina together
Thats what i say Troy didn't want her compromise her character because she was great and beautiful already
@Pesto Patagonia troy wasn't. He knew that dress wasn't her and that's why he made that comment don't think for yourself because of Mike told her not to change while Troy said she should where were her normal clothes suggesting that dress wasn't her
So you had everything figured at 22?really
@@chenetempy michael would later go on with his film career and become harvey weinstein haha
When Ben Stiller paused and turned around, I thought he was going to give us his Zoolander look! 😙
Its interesting how you see Troy’s character in your 20s, like a unique, cool, rebel. Fast forward 10 years and he is a obnoxipus pretentious plain loser. Considering they are playing guys in their 20s it makes sense she ends up chosing troy
I never saw Troy as a unique, cool rebel. Nor do I see him as a pretentious, plain, loser. People are more ambiguous than that with more complexities. I see him as a young guy who's intelligent, funny, and charismatic but also self righteous and has a lot of growing up to do.
Looking back Ethan’s character is verbally abusive. Very aggressive. The scene where he doesn’t let her pass by, like he acted like he was gonna fight her. Pretty toxic. Ben was the better man.
Lmaoo "he acted like he was gonna fight her"...let's not over-exaggerate. He was just not letting her pass to be a douchebag bag. Also it was in response to her pretty f'd up "just like him" comment she made to Troy about his dying father. (which was pretty harsh to say the least) Troy obviously had a lot of growing up to do but that doesn't mean that Ben was the better man.
lol. Hey, what's your glitch??!!!🌉
Michael stepped on the line. The line on the sands of coolness.
@@zecraw .....and he stepped on it in a way in which you will never will!! BUURRNN!!! Lol
So pretty in this movie..
I remember this.. This was after Melrose Place came out and after the Beverly Hills 90210.. Then they had this movie in the theatres..
I had a dog and a cat.. I got them both from the newspaper.. I gave the dog away and I still had to feed the cat..
Well, it was this one time my mom and her husband they put up the money for this apartment and I lived on Venice.. And so really I was going to make enough money painting street addresses, because I knew how to make money doing that..
But I was not this funk soul brother.. You know I was about 19 years old.. And I had this friend named Barak.. So he comes over and he just starts being there.. All the time.. See, and what happened is that I never turned him down at a game of chess..
There was a video game across the street that I used to play.. It was like a soccer game..

The problem with Troy is that he's too smart for his own good. I couldn't see Troy working a typical 9-5. His character either became a burnout or started his own business.
Nah, the problem is that he's far less intelligent than he thinks he is, with an overly inflated sense of his own "uniqueness"; but guys like him-- who hang around townie-loser bars well into their 40s trying to pick up women who are young and inexperienced enough to still be impressed by their vapid, pseudo-intellectual ramblings-- guys like him are a dime-a-dozen.
I think this movie should have ended with Ethan Hawke's character getting his ass beaten senseless.
True that
No way
He kinda did. He was fired, coming to grips with his failures, no college degree, and then his dad died.
Why? Because he stole a Snickers???

Isn't Stiller's character a Jew? It's very Jewish looking to me but I could be way off there.
not the point. he's trying to be respectful and supportive; also he's trying to be the gentlemanly counterpoint to Troy's crass behavior.
