@@lukeasacherThat would have been a noteworthy experience at the age of six , I'm sixty and I was somehow unaware of Grand Prix until about 2001 , it's been pretty much my favourite movie ever since, I think it's beautiful. My father took me to see" Bullitt" though when I was seven ish ( here in New Zealand), but it was a double feature, and the first film was Bonnie and Clyde , so by the time the second movie was playing I was getting sleepy , and missed the car chase , about all I remember seeing was a man blasted against a wall with a shotgun, much like Bonnie and Clyde , not really kids movie's . 😅

As a racer from that period (although at a much lower level) I can very much identify with this film. I recall vividly the Hobbs/Posey rivalry in F5000 (including playing liars dice in a bar with Posey's car owner Doug Champlin in Monterey) and flagging those races in the late 60s, early 70s. Great times!

Back in 1969, a man growing a full beard was making a statement about himself. Garner's racing time beard established that he was cut from a different cloth than many of his peers. DItto McQueen and Newman. They lived lives.

      Hell yes!
His role in Grand Prix presented him as an arrogant entitled guy, when in reality he’s a guy with a real love for racing.
He’d help out his rivals when there’s a broken part, just like it was back then in racing!
It was a brotherhood with a code of honor that everyone respected.
Boy do I miss this kind of racing!

@@RichardMcLaren I´ve read somewhere on the web that he did all car stunts himself on the Rockford Files TV series, my favorite in the seventies although they didn´t air all seasons on swedish state TV (catching up now by digital :)). One of the great american screen/TV actors of his generation imho. That golden Firebird in the series looks like the entry level Esprit but it´s been said that Garner thought it was better to use a disguised Trans Am due to his low brow PI character´s financial situation (always living from paycheck to paycheck it seems) but the Trans Am was better suited for the hard driving action scenes.

How times have changed: the instrument panel with four gauges, a three spoke steering wheel -- with NO lights or graphs, that there were cars competing without wings and being competitive.
