    I love a good mystery.
I'm not smart enough to comment on PCB components, but I would connect some headphones in case it's one of those rare devices that turns off if there are none connected (to save power). If you have a compatible remote, that might give you a clue, or the player button-controller might be faulty. Check the Hold switch in case it's engaged or faulty. Check the disc-detect and door-closed sensor switches (you sprayed one of them, I think), can you test them with a multimeter? Finally give it a sharp tap on the back of your hand, it worked for me once.
Looking forward to finding out the solution.

Hi, yes I checked some of the board with a multimeter and power was getting to the little sensor switch and the HOLD switch. I am at a bit of a loss on what to check next.

Those md devices… real struggle to save them. I remember that on my bench i had only sony devices like n1, n10… those was powering on but doesn’t read mds or doesn’t record, but in the end most of the time just mechanical parts cleaning and relubrication where it’s necessary fixed those issues. When device doesn’t power on at all its kind a hard to track what’s the problem. My suggestion would be to use service manual and check with tester all power supply lines that all necessary chips are getting power. Lots of “stabbing” with tester will be needed. I believe you can save this device!
    Cheers

Thanks for your advice. I will revisit this one in the future. It's a nice looking paperweight if I can not fix it!
