Making an LED Backpack Using Trailer Lights

- I love biking in the city, at night, wearing all black. A dangerous trifecta. Less so with this LED trailer light backpack mod.
On August 31st, 2010, I was in an accident that could have taken my life. I don't know if I have a guardian angel looking after me, but I walked away unscathed. Take from that what you will.
My accident wouldn't have been prevented by a few extra LEDs. However, on the 10th anniversary year of the crash, I thought about how I could prevent anything similar happening as I ramp up my riding time. While I could be wrong, I feel that reflective garments prompt a delayed reaction from drivers. Light first has to bounce off of them, then register in the driver's brain as an obstacle. This takes a moment since drivers are looking out for red lights rather than reflective surfaces they rarely come across. Garments are better than nothing, but not ubiquitous enough to be the eye-catcher that bright lights are. Plus, I like electronics and soldering. Not that that had anything to do with my decision...
If I were to do this again, I would mechanically fasten the lights to the backpack via rivnuts or sewing. I've had success with E6000 for crafts. I recommend it for some high-hold projects, but only after testing it first. Will I use more food-related tools when working with it? Time will tell.
The longest part of this project (beyond the video) was making design decisions. Adding lights was easy, and will be for those with basic electronics knowledge. I want to make complex projects on this channel. Still, I believe there is value in embracing the small things. Oftentimes, they're the most meaningful. Through Hardware Unknown, I aim to inspire makers in ways I wanted to be inspired as I began my journey. I hope this project demonstrates that you absolutely can make something wonderful, no matter your skill level. Designing a rocket or programming an app is great. If you love doing that, do it! Just remember... if that's not your cup of tea, that doesn't make your projects any less valuable. They are yours, they are important, and the world wants to see them.
I want to see them.

you put a lot of effort in you're videos and it shows
p.s I love wearing all black to
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for this. You seeing the work that was put in and then enjoying the result means the world to me. This video took the longest so far and was my favorite to film (each builds on the last in its own way). All things considered it took about 62 hours of work from initial planning to final upload. It's a huge effort, and I really enjoy the process as well as the end product. I'll keep on putting in that effort and I hope you'll stick around for more projects. I made progress on my next one today and had to work through some tough issues with the electronics. Of course I love the learning process, and comments like yours really help make those difficult moments even more worth it.
Yes! You know where it's at with all black. Its both utilitarian and stylish. Keep on wearing it my friend, I'll be right there with you. Once my boots wear out, I'm going to purchase my next pair in the same style and in black, then I'll finally complete the look.
@@HardwareUnknown hey man, we appreciate all the work and effort you put into.
I first watched your video of Making your bike into a Commuter Bike (or I guess thats how the title goes) thats was good content my friend, having to watch this as the 2nd video on your channel, pretty awesome on point and practical discussions.
For a second I thought you're a famous youtuber, since editing is great, the angles, the videography, and the actual creativity that is within the video, but I was like, why does this guy have less than 150 subs, then I guess this guy is knew. But anyways man, I guess down the line you'll gain more subscribers and viewers, hope you do well my friend, ride safe!
@@guandasin3099 You made my day here. I'm still fresh into videography and sharing my projects, and I'm really enjoying it as it's encouraging me to make even more stuff. Of course I look forward to my builds simply because I love making things. I'll tell you, though, it means the world to me that I have viewers like you who really see and appreciate what goes into all this.
As I look to increase my project complexity, it's a constant process of taking the time necessary to learn skills on the spot while also working to get new videos out to you all. I'm still discovering how best to do that, as well as what I want my video style to be. I'm delighted to know you are already enjoying my early work. I'm just getting started, and I can't wait for what's to come. I have constantly-growing plans for the projects I'd like to share with you all.
I couldn't ask for more than a community of interested people like you looking forward to my work. I hope you stick around.
Finally found the one person on youtube who was thinking like me. I want to build a travel backpack with 12v lighting as you did for multi use and dark trailing every once in a while. Having built in lighting on the pack helps and lessons' the need for head lamps and other items and you can charge your lower powered devices as well. Great build and I will be building something similar soon. My setup will have permanent lighting with removable battery.
Great minds think alike. It's so useful, I'll tell ya. Being as bright as a car makes people pay attention. Let me know how your build goes! I'm excited to see someone else with a similar build. Sounds like you'll get a lot of use out of it!
@@HardwareUnknown Yea I have cases where my family and I stay at events past dark and it will be nice having a back pack on and lighting dark paths on the way out to the car. I have a collection of Ryobi 18v and 40v batteries that I can put into use for a built like this. Hopefully you post more builds like this in the future.
amazing work man, keep up this, you're really entertaining and everything in this video just proves how much you do.
I appreciate this immensely. I always have a large amount to learn for each video, and I'm so glad the joy of that process shows through. I have multiple projects in the works as we speak. One electronic, one mechanical. The latter mayyyyy involve some air power. =) Can't wait to share them with you.
@@HardwareUnknown excited to see those! :D
going to do this for my scooter bag
Super high vis, I think you'll enjoy it. I also ended up using a different battery for most of my rides. It's the same brand, but smaller/lighter. An option if you want to trade off lower capacity for lower weight: amzn.to/3zZOP0n
Let me know how the mod goes!
Love this video. You're calmer than the other one 😊
You remind me of the younger Patrick Dempsey ☺️
I learned a lot between the two, and continue to refine my style. It's a fun journey, and feedback like yours always helps me as it let's me know what my viewers enjoy. Thanks for that, and the comparison to Patrick! First time I've heard someone mention a resemblance. He's a handsome guy.
new sub! crazy story good that you came out of it. Nice editing
I'm still baffled to this day I came out without injury. It's why I only wear full face helmets to this day. Mine saved my life. Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks so much for the sub! I started CZcams with no editing or filming (or even video storytelling) knowledge, and I aim to continually grow from here. I've got several projects in the works and I'll be releasing the videos ASAP. Really looking forward to sharing them.
As for the difference between nectar and juice, the former may be diluted and/or have additives, whereas juice is expected to be 100% undiluted and pure stuff. Some juices are made from concentrate, but are still meant to be equivalent to freshly pressed juice, whereas nectar is not.
Prevention is better than cure! 😊
Indeed! Much easier and less expensive too. Prevent an accident in the first place. Most important is awareness and smart defensive riding, but a massive set of red lights can't hurt. 🙂
Nectars is 50% juice and 50% water.
I did not realize there was actually a definition. Good to know!
Show us the closet 🥴👀
