Sandstone and Scrap Iron are both droppable reagents, from Evil Magma Pea's. I have a couple characters worth of those reagents because I know they're useful for crafting quests / craftables, I recommend farming EMP's if you find yourself needing those reagents. EMP's also drop mega snacks so it's worth it anyway.

I don't think you have to learn the spells. A friend of mine got one for Life and something else (I think it was Myth) and he didn't have weaver, and it cast weaver twice in a row.
