    As a 130lb white belt and the smallest guy in the gym, applying the concept of modifying your guard to what they give you has helped me tremendously! Still getting smashed but definitely seeing small improvements! Thank you:)

    Love the shoutout to Keenan, the deadlift pass is so deadly. Your counters to it by staying far away to make it more difficult are another reason I watch all your videos on guard retention and attacks. If you did a long form guard attacking/retention series I would 100% buy it.

    Hey John, thank you for the vids. I have been watching them for a few months now. Much of what you teach is basic stuff, however the intricate focus in the details and the effectiveness in how you provide those details is superb. I've been able to chain alot of my moves now just because of the concepts learned watching this. I encourage everyone to watch the far side collar video. It will help your game immensely. Big ups John for sharing the knowledge.

    This was super helpful. I was making the mistake of insisting on the standard collar/sleeve guard when the guy is on both knees with the elbow tight. Switching to cross sleeve and attacking the arm drag makes a lot of sense.

    I always go for collar sleeve it is my main guard. This made alot of sense! Could you explain how you would start a roll and get to this grip. How you pull to this guard. (Stand and Sitting) I have trouble establishing grips against explosive passers and get to a safe guard position. Thank you!

    Great videos, Jon. One of my biggest problems when I play collar-sleeve is when my opponent gets a grip on my lapel using the sleeve hand and he is super strong that I can’t break his grip. He also keeps his elbow tucked tight to his hip that I can’t get my foot n his hip. Any advice?

    I'm struggling with the lasso (or any guard that isn't de la riva lol) for some reason. I need to start playing this though because I know it is going to help. But my problem is that if I don't control the leg, people just walk around my guard straight into side control lol. I'm gonna work on collar sleeve today and see what i can do.

    Maybe a bit of a different topic, but when i play dlr/collar guard with an ankle grip and try to put a guy on his butt to bolo, he often tripods by posting his right arm out (assuming i am sweeping to my left) and we get stuck there. Is there a specific thing you do there...continue to try to invert or change grip...or something else? Thank you.

    I played lasso for all of last year and saw many of the benefits that you’ve expressed in your videos. A few months ago I tore my lasso knee and haven’t been able to play this guard. I’m sure I’ll find a suitable game plan around it but I was wondering if you had any tips for people who don’t play this guard.

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  Před 6 lety

      Eddie the Foot so if your knee injury doesn’t allow any rotation in the knee and you can not lasso at all. I would say develop on a reverse dlr single leg and half series. Assuming you have ok mobility in the other knee.

    I noticed you are pretty relaxed with your lasso leg, Can you explain the difference in your lasso compared to others you have seen? michael langhi shows his version on a rolled up episode where he feeds his leg in pretty deep something I havent had much success with. If this has already been addressed in another video please direct me to it also appreciate the content you are releasing I read a review on reddit about a private somebody did with you and you are top of my bucket list for a private.
    Thanks in advance for all the future videos.

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  Před 5 lety

      Braja Hey good question, the lasso not deep is more useful for pushing opponent away creating space to free your bottom leg and transition to other positions. The deep lasso has uses but I don’t use it very often. Honestly Michael Langhi doesn’t either not particularly sure why they show it that way in instructional. This is why I prefer to watch competition footage or only watch instruction if I know the guy shows exactly what he does.
      Watch this match
      czcams.com/video/GX3qMFz8ntw/video.html
      See how many times you see langhi use the deep lasso compared to the shallow. Also I would suggest watching a lot of his competition footage online and just see how often he uses the deep lasso compared to the shallow one I showed here. The tape doesn’t lie so I always try to trust in that.

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  Před 6 lety

      Shane Young if you have been forced to Knee Shield I think you need to fix something pre emptively, but if it does happen I like framing with the collar trying to come up on your elbow and backing out to get your bottom leg free. I can do a short video on it.

    Does berimbolo fit well into your game and if so how often/when do you use it?

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  Před 6 lety +5

      estan holoiga Absolutey it does, it is very easy to transition bolos into a strong open guard transition game. The hardest part of the bolo game is having a good enough open guard to knock them over. Once you get that down then you can working the finishes a bunch. Basically your open guard control is the frame, and you put moves like triangles, omoplatas, and bolos as your finishing tools. I’ll do some videos on that soon.

  • @KingsSVR

    I feel like I lose the lasso too easily when my opponent gets too close and pushes my lasso and kind of stacks me, is there something I can do specifically? Or should I just abort when that happens? I feel like maybe it’s a problem for me cause I have long legs. Thanks!

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  Před 6 lety +1

      KingsSVR it’s not your long legs I assure you. Yeah if the guy tries to use his other arm to push your lasso leg off you should have your non lasso leg active and keep your foot in his bicep to prevent him from being able to come across and push the lasso leg off. Also if he gets close with his hip and posture you should be able to switch out to a cross sleeve position well and maybe go dlr lace

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  Před 6 lety

      Joel Field yeah absolutely, I use the foot on shoulder a lot as a way to push create space to get my bottom leg out when it gets trapped. Plus it’s easier to unlasso fast and create quick de la riva or omoplata transitions.
