- We talk about lessons learned on the OS23 Frontier Sawmill along with making some cool White Oak beams for a project. We decided to get a portable sawmill over two years ago. We have learned a lot in that time. I put a link to the full log project at the end of this video. @FrontierSawmills

Good video. Tanja does a great job getting the perfect shots. Good having a partner to help you out. Thanks for sharing. Pray surgery went well for you.
I am laid up for another week, but I am recovering nicely. Tanja's video makes it all work.
Tony, hope your surgery went well. That mill keeps delivering for you. Tonja, thanks for baking out there to get this content!
My wife has me chained to the chair for a few more days, but I am doing well. I hope to get back to light duty next week.
Great video. Keep them coming. Great camera skills miss Tonya yall stay safe .
Thank you. Tanja is the glue that holds it all together. LOL!
Good morning guys .Love the sawmilling videos. You can't beat good old white oak for posts.Really strong wood .lol you strained your guts out turning that log right before you said oh bye the way got to have surgery next week.lol.My wife laughed and said that reminds me of you.😑.She said to tell miss Tayna that takeing a garlic tablet once a day from spring till fall will put the breaks in all biting insects . especially ticks and masquitoes .Hope y'all have a blessed Sunday and give Gizmo hugs for us .
I hate having to sit still for two weeks. Nothing over 5 pounds for a while. Garlic makes since. I love garlic, and Tanja doesn't like it as much. Thank you both for the info. Tony
@@TonysTractorAdventure we will be praying for yall
That's dedication, Tony! Rainy this July 4th weekend on the Florida coast and at the farm, so we are pretty much house bound. Is it weird we'd rather be tractoring than sitting in the A/C?!! Happy INDEPENDENCE DAY!!
Happy Independence day my friend. I am laid up healing. My wife has me chained to the chair. 😁
@@TonysTractorAdventure I dodged rainstorm to cut a big red oak that fell on our fence, so the day was not wasted. Feel better Tony!
I started watching this because I might be interested in the OS23. But I have to comment on your working relationship with your wife. If I were married, this is exactly how I would want that marriage to be. It makes me happy to see that you have that.
Eric, Tanja and I have been married for over 30 years. She was with me through the biggest part of my Army Career. After, I(we) retired from the Army, we started looking for our next challenge.
Awesome video you guys keep up the great work. Its supposed to be a scorcher here in missouri this week with Temps in the hundreds and high humidity. Be safe and enjoy your 4th.
Happy Independence day
Morning Tony. You know that officers don’t sweat, we perspire. Sorry, feeling snarky this AM. I hope you take the time to heal properly. Lost time is always a bummer, and seems to happen at the worst time. AKA Covid. The work will have to wait Chief. Swatting bigs in MI, not Camp Grayling tiny ones however!
Morning sir! Having this surgery right after having COVID really puts a kinker in my plans. I have been nursing this hernia for about seven months, so I think it was the right choice. Warrant officers are allowed to sweat a little bit for command. 😁 Stay well and we will see you next time.
Hope your surgery when well. Great video. Your wife does an amazing job with the camera
Poison Ivy got me bad a few yrs ago and it came back for 3 summers before it gave up.
I have never been allergic to Poison Ivy. I am so glad too. I am always in it.
That's s beautiful 6X6. Thanks for your efforts.
Living and learning!
I don't envy the heat you have to endure! Tony I've been sawing about 7 years now and have learned a few things to get the best yield out of the small diameter logs on our property, first I never make a cut with one end off the bunk, also I rotate the log 180 degrees after the first cut then I only have to square the third cut, even with the bow in that log you should have been able to get an 8x8 with minimal wane towards the middle of the log. That said every log is different but if you standardize your procedures that takes at least one variable out of the equation. I have a Norwood LM 29 with a 13hp Honda and is a great size mill for my needs, kinda on the high side of the mid size mills, you can never have too much HP! Thanks for the videos I've been watching from up here in Nova Scotia for quite a while and enjoy the content!
Thank you for all of your knowledge. I learn something new each day.
thank you very much for doing the camera and every thing else you do ..
Thank you. Tanja makes the channel work.
👍👍👌👌 Keep on keepin' on.
Thank you. I am ready to get back out to the sawmill.
I think the saying is, "sweating like a stuck pig". I always took as how a hog sweats over a fire. If you've ever roasted a whole pig, those things "sweat" a lot.
You are close, but growing up on a mass pig farm (upto 5k head at one time) the term is "I am bleeding like a stuck pig" People use to slaughter by sticking the neck area hitting a main blood vein. Blood would squirt out. Pigs don't have sweat glands, so I guess the old saying was an oxymoron type saying.
Great video, Tony! Regarding the poison ivy, when we moved out into the country over 20 years ago, I was very sensitive to it. However, right now much like you, it really doesn't cause any reaction. Nonetheless, I'm still pretty careful, as my wife is super sensitive and I make sure I wash all my tools and surfaces that I touch that she might eventually come in contact with. That stuff is nasty!
We have it pretty good here. Tanja has a strong resistance to it. We are always in the woods.
Awesome video Tony. Tonyas camera work is top notch. White oak grows like that here too. Giant bells. Taper quickly. It’s a little toasty here in central Pennsylvania too.
I have a good bit of White Oak to cut. It is great for so many projects.
HELLO TONY. I been through that hernia deal, twice. Nooo fun. Let yourself heal up, don't over do it. One the kant size: a rule of thumb is the kant will be 70% of the diameter.. Your 12" diameter log would produce a 7.4 kant..... except for the crook in the log. visualize the kant from the small end of the log to the "choke" point, usually the center of the length of the log. Now, if a larger diameter of the log at this point it will usually give you a little lee way in projecting the kant to the large end of the log. ALL three windows must line up.. This become evident when you saw straght planes(the sides of the kane) off the log. Good luck with your sawing, always something to learn.
Rodney
Thank you. I am taking it easy for sure. I don't want to do this again! My second one too.
Tonja does a fantastic job behind the camera, and helping you out too, Tony! 👏👏 😎 I'm really bad allergic to poison ivy and oak. And it itches really bad. Calamine lotion is the way to go for me. Keep up the great work, my friend! 🚜
Thank you. We had a good time.
Outstanding informative video Sir ( Great tips too ) and OUTSTANDING camera close up views Sir 👍👍👌👌🧐🧐Cheers🍻
Thank you
Enjoyed this video Tony. It has been miserably hot in North Carolina too. Tanja does an outstanding job of filming the videos. Hope y'all have a Happy 4th of July!!!
Happy Independence day
Morning Tony and Tonya, I understand the bugs situation, up here at the Cay the mosquitoes and black flies are well fed. As for the heat, still waiting, we haven't broken 80 yet. Loving the hot rod mill, take care. 🍻🪵🇨🇦🇺🇸 Happy long weekend too! 🍹 🥛🍺
I will take our bugs over your bugs any day. I did some Army training up in Michigan one summer. I thought the black flies were a Plague sent by God.
@@TonysTractorAdventure yeah they are definitely a pain in the =%*. Lots of bug dope this year.
Great video Tony
One big reason I don’t have a mill yet is that I want a large mill but I only have the budget for a small one
Keep up the good work
I hope your surgery went well
You need to come down and check the sawmill out. You can learn a lot from the small sawmill.
Thank you
Nicely done, very informative.
Thank you.
I really enjoy watching your video, very nice couple !!!
Thank you so much!
Thanks great video
Thank you
I am! Love my os23. Need to get more track for longer length
I wished I had gone bigger, but the OS23 does what it is rated and a little more!
It's very hard to work outside here in southeast Louisiana. Being from the San Francisco bay area I've gotten spoiled, It can get way over 100 there but cools off in the evening when the Coastal Fog rolls in. High temps but very little humidity, needless to say I spend lots of time in front of a fan in my shop or jumping in the pool while I work in the yard. To hot jump in for a few mins. then back to work.
I have a severe reaction to poison oak , Ivy and sumac, Louisiana is blessed with forests and my yard full of all three. I get it so bad that I have to go to the Hospital and get shots and steroid creams to try to clean it up. Burned some wood with limbs and brush that had some in it and I didn't see it, I got it from the smoke and it was in my hair, eyes, and all over took a month 3 trips to the hospital to get rid of that case.
I am blessed to not get poison ivy rashes. My cousin was like you. He will get a rash walking by the stuff.
Hy Tony you and Tanja ate doing an awesome job Happy 4th of July from 🇵🇷
Happy Independence day
The rain is coming!!!
God, I hope so! No rain here in 34 days. Just a sprinkle here and there.
Git it girl every lil. It helps
really hot here i have been sweating like a stuck hog.. have been working on sawmill shed. get Tanya some pepperment soap. i use it and it helps she is really good on videoing.. take care, be safe and well.
Thank you John. She uses peppermint oil often. I hope to get back to the sawmill soon m
Man it gets hot down here don’t it!!!! It’s that time of year again
I don't want to jinks it, but it has been cool here so far. It will most likely burn us out in a week or two.
It’s here and it’s coming. Whew!
106 heat index today
This is my first time watching one of your videos, and am looking forward to many more. I am going to be in the market for a saw mill, hopefully in the near future, and am interested in the price range you mentioned here. How would you say this saw compares to a Wood Miser (or other brands for that matter), besides the obvious price difference??
To this point it does everything it is rated to do. Through my lack of understanding, I bought a mill too small. I am thinking about upgrading to a OS31.
If you are just cutting posts, why not square the log to what dimension you want and don’t worry about bark left on corners of the post.
Because, I am married.
Thanks for sharing buddy hope you all have a wonderful 4th
Same to you! Going to Church this morning and watching fireworks tonight! Good day.
Would you get the wheels (portable saw mill) again? I am looking to purchase to do a homestead in the Caribbean. You mentioned you pick up logs from others. Would you cut on there sites or move to your location. I am wondering if the extra money for the trailer set up is worth it or go bigger on the saw mill itself?
For me, I think it's easier to bring the log to The sawmill. I suspect if I had a mobile setup that I used everyday It would be okay to move the sawmill. However, I did not have that. I can't tell you how many things I forgot and how many trips I had to go back and forth when I brought my sawmill to an all-site location. I find it easier just to bring my tractor to a location and load logs. I come back for the tractor on the last trip.
Put a double sided strip of duck tape on the top of your hat it will act as a trap try it. Works great
👍👍
👍
Has your latches on the cover broke yet? If so what did you replace them with?
My latches have not broken.
How does the saw perform on hickory and knotty pine ? My last saw cut them wavy and was not pleased with the lumber it sawed.
Always had good luck. In my experience on this mill, wavy cuts are caused by the blade being too loose, poor tooth set, or dull blades. You could also be a combination of things. One of the thing that causes wavy cuts is when an operator sets the blade too far forward on the wheels.
I broke into a sweat just watching you'll.....
I love doing this type of work
How true does that sawmill cut?? We are in west Tennessee and have a lot of oak and poplar.
It cuts as true as any brand. It is still rough cut lumber. You can cut it true, but the lumber will change as it dries. I am learning to cut a 1/4" thicker and plane it down after drying.
Any sale outlet in india?
I don't know. I don't sell them.
You need a chicken house fan improvement
This is a temp building. We are at some point going to build a proper Sawmill Shed for the sawmill with electric.
Habor freight tool doing well people don't realize what those cordless tools are .
Habor freight engine lift would help on log turning in a pinch
You could maybe burn the poison ivy off.
Burning poison ivy releases the oil in the vine and can get in lungs.
NOT allergic to anything...
That is good. We are rare.
Yes we are, and I hope all went well with your operation. Please keep up the good work and let your better half know we know how hard it is to make you look good! HAHAHA 🤣😂
To much bull , no knoldge at all
Thank you for your opinion.
so the only "lessons learned" was to buy the biggest one you can afford?
That is the only lesson for the less observant viewer.🤣
so what lessons learned? nothing in this just cutting timber
If you didn't learn anything, that is on you. You can't skip through the video and expect to understand.
