I visited a friend in San Francisco 2 days after Williams passed away, and we went to visit the house featured in the movie. Tons of people leaving flowers. It was sad, but made me smile to see the outpouring of love.

Robin Williams to me was an open channel to the human spirit. He was always funny but when he did something dramatic it must've came from a deeper place. There's a whimsical quality that some special people just have. It's sad he's gone but that joy that unique feeling he can give you. That will forever be immortalized in movies like this.
@zbennalley I worked on a film with Robin Williams (Secret Agent, not great, I think it went straight to video/dvd) but it's a name drop I'm proud to be able to do. When people say "you should never meet your heroes, they'll only disappoint" it's because they never HIM. Such a nice person, he always came on set early to speak to everyone (even in his 'quieter' days) and often had lunch with cast and crew. I'm from UK and people love to say they've met the queen. When I tell them I can go one better, nobody disagrees 😂such a loss😢
Robin became famous for being the silly, funny guy we all him to be but he was a great actor. Those monologues he performed in Good Will Hunting and some of the scenes here definitely pulled on the heart strings.
In thrillers he was scary too (One hour photo, Insomnia n others) so he was an all-around fantastic actor. RIP Captain

Robin Williams was the one who intervened when they tried a fairy tale ending to the movie. He steered it to the more realistic struggle of broken families finding strength despite broken hearts.
It wasn't just him, Sally Field fought just as hard. They were both going through a divorce while filming and both have kids
I grew up with divorced parents. So the last part of this movie always hits home with me. Gets me emotional, but it’s all facts! A masterpiece performance. Rest in paradise Mr. Williams 🙏🏽 🙏🏽
The original ending had them getting back together, but Williams and the director fought and won to have it changed to this ending because they argued that a happy ending wasn't realistic and falsely taught kids that things will always work out. As a kid growing up with divorced parents and visitation rights, I appreciate the realism. Kids don't need their parents to stay together. They just need to know that it's not their fault.
Yes exactly, my parents divorced when I was 15… which is a hell of an age for your parents to get divorced. But even though it was painful at the time, as an adult I learned that that was best. My parents shouldn’t be married because they weren’t happy together and I don’t want them to be unhappy. They can be much better parents when they’re not together
It was Williams and Field. They were both going through a divorce at the time and both have children.
To really be real, some parents should separate. Good choice for the ending. Anyways, they now added Stu to the family, ha ha. Truth be told, this movie really shows how kids are weaponized by parents all spiteful with each other. Kids get caught in the middle.
What makes this movie all the more wild, is even though he is hilarious in this film, Robin Williams was in the thick of his hardest depression days during filming. He had quit cocaine a few years beforehand and it wrecked his brain and the actor who plays the son said recently that Robin would go to his trailer and just cry all night long after shooting because he knew he did untold amounts of damage that was causing him issues. It very likely contributed to his developing dementia at 61, and taking his life shortly after.
Some people aren’t aware that it was the leweybody syndrome that did him in, it wasn’t the depression.
Comedians are depressed people… Jim Carrey was on Prozac for years. I personally think that becoming big stars like they did is very healthy, it makes their mental health even worse
The best comedians have deep trauma in their past.
Robin Williams was for me one of the funniest people ever to live on the planet earth.. the world became a little darker when he passed away. RIP robin..
I really like watch "FTW reactors" of that movie because they usually jump in like a pure comedy and at one point they are genuinly triggered by it !

robin williams and sally fields fought for the ending of this movie saying them staying separated helped kids understand its a fact of life sometimes.

My parents divorced in 1994 , the year that I've seen this movie, I was 17 years old, the end where they are not getting together was a good choice. My parents were fighting all the time, they became better people when they went their own way. What Mrs Doubtfire said in the end was exaclty how it went with my parents. Master role from the late Robin Williams, RIP man.
Great reaction. Great movie. His character focused most of his affection towards the kids. Almost zero towards his wife. Maybe it should be more the other way around.

Best thing about this movie: there are no bad guy. Not a single character.
You got the wife perfectly, she is just exhausted from having to be the serious one, the dad is just suffering from a divorce legal system which used to (maybe still does) favor women over men, and when you have the abilities to do something about it, you’re so pushed at the edge that you just do it, no matter if it’s illegal or immoral, Stu is just in love and in transition from being a womanizer to settling down with someone nice, he even is ready to accept three kids, which is quite something in the 90s.
And the end is just perfect as everyone moves on, learning from their mistakes and becoming better selves (the dad choosing to stay outside, respecting Miranda’s privacy and letting her live her life without interfering, the mom choosing to ignore the court judgment as it was unfair and immoral for her kids, even Stu who shook hands with the dad after almost choking to death as the later saved his life, no matter he tried to sabotage his moves towards Miranda. And in the end, the kids would adjust to this new situation as everyone is acting in their best interest 👍

@@johnpaullogan1365 In that case Stu was going by his opinion based on information he had gotten. Not being employed, living in a dump, Perhaps a bit presumtious not knowing the guy personally, but he wasn't saying it to anyone that it would affect Daniel. And on the other side, it does show that he cared about the children enough to care about them having proper support. Each of them were in the wrong in different moments, but no actual bad guy.
Honestly I can't get fully on board with this though I would like to.
It is apparent that Miranda has some SERIOUS issues that she doesn't know how to communicate.
IMO it borders on Pure Evil or maybe just Self Entitlement or a form of callousness only found in the worst of people that she could see what he did for his children, how he behaved in court, and every word he says to her about them, and STILL sue for full custody as if this was her revenge against him for essentially being an artist who isn't so good at the day to day rat race.
But once dude is on TV she respects him again. What is this?
It's clear she's got some age on her and if at that age she can't see that her issues with her ex-husband AS a husband and him as a father are two very completely different things...than she is blind.
She says that she just doesnt want to hurt her kids but can't raise the kids with discipline which will do far worse to them down the line then dropping her standard of living so that she can be more present in their lives.
This kind of thing has been rampant and is still throughout the US. Instead of going to couples therapy or just solidly cutting the relationship, the children are used as pawn pieces of leverage over the father. It was her Mirandas first and last move and honestly makes her seem like a despicable person.
But let's say she's not despicable and is simply confused or just kind of dumb....still doesn't make her all that great and the closest thing to a villain that this movie gets, even though that really isn't the point of the film.
What doesn’t make sense was that he started being a responsible parent when he became Mrs Doubtfire… why couldn’t he have done that as himself?? 🤨 that might’ve helped saved his marriage
@@thedappermagician6905 i don't feel she thought about how it affected him at all. she just didn't want to deal with him. if she really thought about what he had done for the kids she might have called it off after mrs. doubtfire but he had just committed several dozen felonies and fraud against her and attempted to murder her new boyfriend. she needed some time to cool down from that particular anger. still not thinking about the kids like she should have but i don't think she was taking them to punish him she was just trying to have as little interaction with him as humanly possible

I always loved this movie as a kid, a classic but as you get older you understand the nuance especially the mother and see the flaws of the father but see them grow. My parents were divorced before I could remember anything it's hard to see two parents that are at odds with each other. I do hope more parents/families are able to find peace with each other even if they aren't together.
45:56 lol I had this kind of relationship with my brother and he would always complain about me talking for how long about these issues so I changed my approaches and asked nicely and simple things however he still wouldn't do anything and I would be waiting for months just for it still not to get done, he would even admit to his behavior but didn't care luckily nowadays my brother is no longer like this but it's funny how I a male was playing that role but nowadays my brother is acting more like me and I am the younger brother but it is so frustrating there is no winning and I was just becoming a worse me getting more frustrated but I am interested in seeing that video essay you were talking about hopefully I can find it easily.

I think one reason that divorces often are so nasty is that the married couple waits too long... Only when they thoroughly despice each other it explodes and everyone gets hurt.
It's also time to stop saying "failed marriage". Around half of all marriages end, maybe some should have been saved, maybe some that kept together should have been dissolved, but mostly it's just a change to deal with.
Divorce doesn't mean that you have do disagree on kids or anything, really. Just because life changes you don't have to go all sandbox and piss yourself.

He was in quite a lot of comedy dramas, the lesser known being 'The World According to Garp' based on a novel by John Irving, 'Bicentennial Man' based on a novel by Isaac Asimov and 'World's Greatest Dad' directed by Bobcat Goldthwait which was one of his later appearances!

another possible take besides just jealousy is that not so much in the 90s but to a large extent it was common for when mothers with sole custody remarried the courts would retract visitation rights from the father to allow the new family to do what they needed such as move elsewhre or just to promote bonding with the new parent. if she married stu he could possibly have lost visitation rights to even see them for a few hours a week

So many men do not get that it’s a partnership, meaning helping each their and being supportive, and traditional gender norms are stupid and pretty sexist. He wasn't a good dad, but he started to become one by the end of the movie. This was an absolute fantasy of a movie. As others have pointed out, he committed multiple crimes, as he even pointed out to his kids ("the next time we see each other, it'll be through plexiglass "). He's incredibly lucky he wasn't charged.

She had every right to divorce him. She had absolutely no right to keep his kids away from him. She was the villain in this story. Your children are not a weapon for your grievances.
It's mostly the guys because it's propaganda. The opposite is the wives "hanging out" with the guys, which is worse.

You're ending commentary about this CZcams video about a nagging wife I think it depends if she's a stay-at-home mom and he's working. All depends on the dynamic of the relationship like in this movie she was working some corporate job & remember she dropped off the kids late. So the generalizations blaming man isn't necessarily Fair since many women use the children as weapons like she could have let him watch them after school and we would have ended up the same place we did at the end of the movie same thing with the court system usually favor giving the kids to women even if the guy is making the money they still give it to the women but the man has to give alimony and child support so in the end it all depends on the dynamic of each individual

This is a great example women say they want careers and that they want to be treated as equal as men and when Miranda is put in the situation where she is basically the provider she can't handle it and she resents him for it but if a man had a job and the woman then he's not allowed to resent her for it
