- How to build a hidden bed, stay level desk, part 1 of many. In this video I will introduce you to the bed desk project, and show the first few steps of how to build the bed.
Plans: www.Beddeskplans.com
Thanks for supporting my project! - Jak na to + styl
just bought the plans. cant wait to build it. Thanks
thanks buddy! Let me know if you have any questions along the way, and be sure to send pictures of your finished project!
What if i want to put a larger screen on the desk top, can you adjust the plans so the bed has a higher clearance in the down position
great question! lots of people have mounted larger screens directly to the back of the bed. that works really well
Is the bed free-standing, or is it anchored to the wall?
What is the useful storage space on top of the desk when the bed is down in its horizontal sleeping position?
How far out from the wall is the vertical bed base when the bed is in the vertical daytime position?
I went to the site to buy plans but need the info above to be sure the bed will fit my needs.
Hi Steve, yes the bed is anchored to the wall. this is so it doesn't fall over when you are lowering it. there is 9" of clearance on the desk when the bed is down.the bed is 16" deep when in the vertical position. pause the video here czcams.com/video/Lc7qAtw3obE/video.html you will see all the dimensions. Thanks for the questions
Awesome, just what I was looking for! I’m trying to determine what the price would be if I built this for a twin sized bed... do you remember what size of plywood boards you used by any chance?
Of course! If your building the bed without the shelves (frame like in the video) for a single, you'll need 4 sheets of half inch finish grade plywood and 1 sheet of half inch construction grade plywood. Here's the link to the plans:
www.beddeskplans.com/product-page/twind-bed-plans-inches
Hi, Quick couple of questions, could the desk part be made wider - as in around 750mm or 30 inch deep? and could the depth of the cabinet or housing for the mattress be reduced to around 150mm or 6 inch? great Video and a nice thought out build! -
Thank you
I'd have to do some work to make those changes possible. send me a message at beddeskplans.com
I want to paint a queen size bed completely white, when is the best time to do it? I'm planning on sanding the finish grade plywood and then applying a coat of white paint on it. Do I need primer as well?
or sure you will need a primer, unless you use a primer paint. I'd paint it when it is fully complete.
just got the plans I have few questions. mainly solid wood desk nosing, is 3/4 thick. is this trimmed down from s 2x2? also the 3/4 " black iron pipe in material I believe is a typo but wanted to double check if that was supposed to be 1/2 "
you can use what ever wood you'd like for the nosing. I used Maple and it was 3/4. a hardwood is best, helps with stiffening the desk. 1/2" iron pipe would work if you can find it!
I watched the video(s) and thought - I'll make this, it suits me, but before I bought the plans, I bought 2 sheets of 18 mm BB/BB grade plywood - at a good price - (thinking it was something like the UK equivalent fo what you'd ued). Having bought the plans, I see the plywood used is just about all 12mm. My question: - would using this thicker ply make the bed so much heavier that it would likely be hard to lift up an down?
it will make it heavier, and there will be some dimensions that you will need to adjust. best advise I can give is use the 18mm for the support frame/shelves and the bed box sides.
just pay attention to your dimensions and you should be fine.
let me know if you have any other questions!
@@TheHowtoDad Thanks!
I am looking to build this bed for my daughters room, queen sized bed, I can't find any plans for a queen :( I really love the desk
Queen plans are in Beta testing now. there have been a few built. the biggest issue we are experiencing is the weight of the bed. It requires a lot of force to put the bed away. This also means it takes a lot of force to lower the bed as well. We are working on trying to figure out a way to make it easier, but until then I am not comfortable with releasing the plans.
GREAT video.
I appreciate that costs will depend on where you live, but how much did it cost you for the raw materials?
cost me about $350 Canadian, so about 10usd
@@TheHowtoDad as a dual citizen, I appreciate this humour :)
Do you have plans for a twin but folding up on the short end of the mattress?
I think I might...send me a message on the website
Do you know when you will have to videos completed on the build?
In the coming weeks. Hopefully before the new year, but no promises
Can you tell me how tall the bed/desk is? It would be going under a window that starts 62" from the floor.
the double bed is 57" high
Sir, can you send me exact measurement of single bed study table? Thank you!
sure. with or without shelves? send me a message through the website, I'll send you a drawing that will answer all your questions
Thank you very much!
What's the ideal weight limit this bed would support with the 1/2" plywood?
the bed can support the weight of 2 full sized adults, similar to a regular bed frame. obviously everything has a limit.
This is very interesting! The only concern I have is with the legs at the top of the mock bed : they seem very narrow to me. Are the legs supporting the weight of the intire mattress? Could modifications be made so that they are less likely to scratch the floor they rest on? Very cool project!
Oh, i'm stupid, the bed actually rests on the shelve part it seems, wich is wider.
The legs are narrow, but because they are plywood they have a great deal of strength. I have had my bed in use for over 4 years now with various people on it, it still works just as well as it did the first time I used it. The legs have never scratched the floor, but if you're worried about, I'm sure some felt pads could help. Modifications are always possible! Thanks for your interest
Do you have the plan for a queen size bed?
sure do! send me a message through my website...and while I was typing this, you did
