      Some legacy. I guess a lot of you are just to young to remember that Fonda is a traitor to the US and her actions directly effected the POW's and the moral of this Nation, or you just don't care. My Father spent 7 1/2 years being starved and tortured for this Country, and Fonda said during the war that the POW's were being well treated and later after the POW's returned, she said that they were lying when they said that they were tortured in Vietnam. I remember as a kid how that hurt and effected me. I guess most don't remember the photo of her sitting on the sam launcher that brought down and killed American aviators or the way she willingly spread propaganda for the enemy. My Father is dead now, his life probably cut short due to the treatment he received as a prisoner of war. I wish you all could have seen the scars on his body from the torture. Or the fact that he was mostly deaf in one ear from being boxed in the ear repeatedly during torture sessions, a minor thing in comparison to the ropes and having his arms pulled out of their sockets, ribs cracked or being thrown into and forced to stand in an open pit of urine and feces where the POW's emptied their buckets/ toilets. At one point during his captivity he went from his normal weight of 165 to 90 pounds. He got rickets and berry berry. That happens when you are only fed daily; two cups of water and two cups of rice, a piece of moldy bread OR a bowl of flavorless pumpkin soup; which consisted of pumpkin, water and the occasional cockroach, or as my Dad called it "protein". Oh, and let me not fail to mention another POW, who was in my Father's and two other POW's presence, when he had a rag shoved down his throat with a bayonet by the guards and he was dragged away out of his cell after around five years of captivity. He was never seen alive again. He died at the hands of the North Vietnamese due to their mistreatment. He left behind a Wife, Son and Daughter. Some say Fonda is remorseful for her past behavior or that she apologized at some point. If she did it was only to help her career. And it was too little, too late anyway. She never apologized to me, my Brother or my Mother and Father for the pain that she caused us. She never apologized to my Friend's Family who's Father was killed. Traitors should be hung, shot by firing squad or at least sent to live in the other Country that they praised so much and were traitors for. I for one will never forgive or forget, I can't. It is unfortunate that Stephen Colbert, whom I love, has forgotten or doesn't care. Even if it had cost him his job, which it wouldn't, he should have refused to have her on.

      In no way am I denying that many Americans did their duty and faithfully served their country, their honorable service will always be held in the highest esteem by me. Nor am I defending Jane Fonda’s action which she herself has admitted was a mistake and has apologized for. At the end of the war it was estimated at most there 2,500 prisoner of war, with the realistic number being 600. 591 were returned to the US. The others were really KIA, MIA, etc. Nixon inflated these for political purposes. 58,000 Americans died in this war. A war that just about every president knew was a lost cause. Governments at their best are made to protect their people from enemies both foreign and domestic. So who was the true enemy of the people? The one who visited Vietnam to see what was going on or the ones who sent thousands to their deaths? As far as POWs go we washed our hands of ours by turning them over to South Vietnam where they were treated as criminals, where they were tortured, maimed, and killed. War is hell. Period. Atrocities will happen on both sides no matter what. For prolonging this war for political purposes against the good of the people should have resulted in treason charges against Nixon and many others.

      Sandra S I feel for your dad, and yes Fonda should and does have some regrets over what she did, I feel that most of your ire should be directed towards the politicians and arms manufacturers that sent your dad into harms way. Vietnam was an unjust war, just like Iraq, but politicians and the arms manufacturers (who own the politicians) will never stop putting people like your father into harms way until we stand up and fight against them.

    • @Mizmaaa
      @Mizmaaa Před 5 lety +13

      I am sorry for your loss. Your line of thinking, however, and I am sorry to tell you that, is just wrong. From ethical point of view and logical. Your father, you say, died because of his experience of being a POW, but it isn't Fonda's fault, not directly at least.
      But even if it was. Let's assume it was. Human life is priceless. Its vaulue is unappraisable, therefore no amount of her saying sorry would ever be enough for your loss. That's why it is our human duty to forgive, because we understand that for some acts we will never be able to receive equally meaningful compensation.
      Your thoughts come from anger and depair after a loss and this is reasonable, but blaming others and wishing them death, because of these very strong and sad emotions that you're obviously feeling right now is just plain wrong and also inhumane. Let me remind you that she was cleared of the charges of treason. There were soldiers, prisoners she met in Vietnam, who corroborated her innocence. For her other stupid acts she did say sorry, but as I said, no amount of sorry will probably ever feel enough for you.
      I hope you find your peace, because obviously you're going through a lot and I also hope you learn to forgive, because this world can only get better if we learn not only how to be genuinely sorry, but also genuinely forgive.

      "... for your country"... no, not for your country, for the political egos of a number of men. Fonda was a voice against that, she did nothing other than publicise and vocalise the deceit and conceit at the time. It isn't that "we" have forgotten or don't care, it's that we can see what was actually happening rather than what we were being told was happening. Who are the actual traitors? @@arnoldbanner4742 First, boy now. You really know how to paint with words.
      Second, why is this so hard to believe? You think our GI's were _enjoying_ Vietnam? Vietnam was a rich man's war, but a poor man's fight. The propaganda machine persuaded us, for more than a decade, to believe that if our troops came home, it would lead to the fall of the US, but they finally came home, it didn't have this effect, and we saw the lie in this.
      Third, it might occur to you that I didn't just pull this out of my ass. There's are reasons we don't just pick random countries and invade, and a number of these reasons were missing with Vietnam. This is chronicled in the documentary _Sir! No Sir! The suppressed story of the GI movement to end the war in Vietnam,_ which it appears you have not seen.
      Now the appropriate response, when someone asserts a conclusion you disagree with is to ask how they figure it, instead of just presuming that they didn't.

      AJ Arcady Why are you using a trumpster technique and making this a "whatabout" argument? Aren't you better than that? Sandra made NO reference to Trump or being right wing at ALL. Why do you assume that just because she dislikes a woman who LIED about the condition of her own country's imprisoned soldiers, she must be a "brainwashed" trump supporter? Where is the evidence of that?
      I'm as liberal as they come and I can't stand Fonda either. Was Vietnam a bad war? Of course. Was America wrong? Of course. But does that mean you go and side with the enemy against your own soldiers? No. Those soldiers being imprisoned did NOT decide to invade Vietnam. They did NOT give the orders. They were draftees in most cases for fucks sakes. Enabling the torture of those men by lying on behalf of the NVA is unforgivable. She is a traitor to her country plain and simple. There were many ways to oppose the war FROM HOME. Without making yourself into a propaganda tool of the enemy. Being against the war is totally fine and was indeed the right position to hold. Joining the enemy side is 100% NOT FINE. Would you be ok with someone going and doing what she did back then over in Afghanistan nowadays? Joining up with the taliban/ISIS and saying the shit she said? Disrespecting thousands of American dead? Spreading their propaganda? It's unthinkable. And I'm very disappointed Stephen would give her the time of day.

    Jane's trip to Hanoi, however misguided, was an attempt to help, to raise awareness. She has since apologized, something today's politicians simply do not do. I admire her for that. She is a leader and always has been since the 60's. Her autobiography was courageous.

    • @sandras7029

Some say Fonda is remorseful for her past behavior or that she apologized. Fonda is as much as of an American patriot as Trump and Putin are.

    Friends around my age who are veterans (whether they were in Viet Nam or served later) still forward to me those Hanoi Jane hate mails. Still. I was misinformed about the anti-aircraft gun incident for decades myself - though I never hated her. After watching some interviews, I totally believe her explanation. I believe she was trying to help - I believe she still is. When celebrities put themselves out there as activists, the price can be high. Even for us common folk there can be a price. If I were to share this on Facebook I am fairly certain I would get unfriended by at least two people, so I think some minds cannot change and I understand why but think it is tragic. I watch "China Syndrome" every now and then - still. And I binge watched Grace and Frankie on Netflix. I enjoy her work and I respect her political courage.
