Gilbert was so worried about not abandoning the people who need him most that he abandoned the people who need him most.
On Sothis he probably just had to ask Dimitri if it would be okay for Annette and his wife to come with him so he could be there for both Dimitri and his family. Hell he probably would've appreciated having something of a surrogate family after Duscur.

Very damn good video in general. Both Harken and Gilbert are both characters I found very underrated.
Also, in case you see this. Thoughts on Cordelia? She is also suffering from survivor's guilt. Even though the games after that forget about that and only seems to focus on her annoying gimmick of loving Chrom.
Yeah, with Cordelia it also has a unique angle, because she survived due to her squad specifically protecting her.
Heroes brings it up every once in a while.

I'm so late to this video but I cannot express how much I appreciated this deep-dive, especially the second half. Gilbert has been a favorite of mine for quite a while and it has always bothered me how unforgiving the wider community is when it comes to one of Three Houses' more realistic characters (like really now, you could meet a person like this irl and this is how you handle him?). I'm especially fond of his relationship with Hanneman (I actually ship them but that's neither here nor there), but his Annette support is one of the absolute best in Houses, up there with Alois/Bernadetta and a few others in my opinion. Gilbert as a character is just fascinating to me and I'm glaf to see people finally do him justice.
The one thing I took away from this video was the reminder that I still havent finished Yakuza 0. I need to get on that ASAP

Gilbert really is one of my favorite characters. He's a bad father, but a great character, facing a damn hard trauma.
I think gilbert is just ashamed of his actions as well. It goes from survivers guilt to being ashamed of abandoning his family, with a healthy dose of fear and self loathing that prevents him from righting his wrong

As someone who continues to grapple with survivor's guilt/trauma (over suicide in my case), "sad boy ouroboros" is f*cking perfect. And then you become aware of it and it m̶a̶g̶i̶c̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ g̶e̶t̶s̶ b̶e̶t̶t̶e̶r̶ becomes NESTED sad boy ouroboros - "why can't I stop thinking like this, what is so wrong with me". Mental illness sucks y'all.

Im so glad someone is talking about Gilbert and not just writting him off as a generic bad dad character. It always urked me when his story is so obviously about his guilt and spiraling self loathing

but nah bro f Gilbert, Anette efforts show more how much he damaged her rather than how good a father he was, also the extra 5 timeskip abandonment years make him look extra stupid while having no real consequences cause his family where just waiting his sad hours to pass
