oh wow you surprised me so much with Percy Jackson being on this list! It does feel like you haven't talked about this series since forever but it made me happy to see it again, especially because this was one of my childhood favorites and (re)readng it years after it still holds great quality. 🦒 With the Fire on High is absolutely one of my favorite summer contemporaries too, I read it in 2019 and I still think about it all the time. I’m starting Malibu Rising tomorrow and I’m so excited!!

Lol. You took my go to summery rec when you said Percy Jackson. If people are looking for a summer thriller, I highly recommend The Collector's series by Dot Hutchison. The second book in particular feels like a summer read to me even though it takes place in winter 🤣
With The Fire On High is the first book I read this year and so far my favorite this year. I really loved the main character.
I connect summer with middle grade since I spent more time in the library over summer break as a kid

I just finished Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender and I think it would work really well as a beach read - it's set in early summer too :)

while not exactly summer specific, All Systems Red by Martha Wells is an action packed novella and something I'd read on the beach. Murderbot is a lovable and relatable character, and the plot moves fast without being heavy.

I had the right combination of niche knowledge and figured out We Were Liars very early in the story and I feel like I robbed myself of the exsperience :(
How to Make a Wish has stuck with me too, I think about it and recommend it often.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOR MALIBU RISING AND WE WE'RE LIARS AHEAD:
I wish I could have a spoiler filled discussion with you about Malibu Rising. I'd love to know what you think about the ending. I personally didn't care for it. I think what they did at the end is so privileged I can't even begin to imagine doing it. It kind of makes the idea of them growing up impoverished disjointed from the privilege, rich snobs they end up being. For example, We We're Liars makes so much more sense because they all grow up so privileged and it was always that way so it just feels right. 🤷 Still love Taylor Jenkins Reid. I think it's interesting how even people that have extremely similar reading interests can end up feeling completely different about a book 😁. I DO agree that it would make for a good quick beach trip read.
