  • Following the awesome response to our series on how the famous Norton Works Team from the 1970s reunited one last time, in 2004, to recreate the five racing machines they first built 30 years earlier, here's a bonus from our original DVD - the first time these bikes were fired up!

This was my era, and I remember the fantastic riding of Peter Williams in 1973 on that incredible bike.

Yes, amazing memories. But to think this video was shot 20 years ago. Norman White is still going strong at the Thruxton Circuit, though. I’m sure, if you were in the area, he’d happily make you a cuppa and take you on a trip down memory lane!

The work you've all done is beyond astonishing. Every rider with a soul thanks you.

Sadly, as this video was filmed in 2004, two of the team are no longer with us, so we dedicate this series to their memory. That said, Norman White, in the blue overalls, starting the bikes, is still open for business at Thruxton Circuit and will fettle any Commando. He’s a fantastic engineer with a wicked sense of humour!

@@3Phils Same comment applies, even if they're no longer here and what a fabulous testament to their skills and their memory those bikes are

You can't beat the crescendo of a pair of meggas on a big bike coupled with the aroma of Castrol "R" clinging to one's nostrils, beautiful.
If my Combat sounds half as good with the Siamese set of pipes that it came with, I'll be close to being happy. Sometime in April, I hope.
Many thanks for uploading this trip down memory lane.

Our pleasure! Ah, the smell of Castrol R! Let us know how you get on with your Combat - send us a video if you’d like us to post it.

The factory stock out of the box 750-850 Commando was the best handling fastest British bike in it's day. If you never managed to live with one you cannot know just how fantastic these bikes were. I would never bother with the new ones.

Quite right. I owned a 750 Commando for almost 20 years, and when it was right, thanks to the attentions of Norman White and his colleagues, it was a fantastic machine. Light, nimble, great handling, reasonably fast (at least as fast as a Z900 or a Trident from the same era, which I’ve also owned and which were much heavier), and the only motorcycle I’ve ever seen that looks like it’s doing 80mph even when it’s parked up on the centre stand! It took a while to get it into shape, though, and I tell some of that tale in another video here: czcams.com/video/Vx78cmNCfWU/video.htmlsi=Fr3QdadyhTNCCs_z

If you can get a Tesla to sound like that,......I still wouldn't drive one.
