I worked at a bakery in the early 80’s, they added nutmeg to their plain old fashioned donuts. Those were always my favorite. It really adds something to them.
in addition, I add mace - yum...great with a caramelized glaze.
Yes !!!! A Delicious Addition, Thanks For Sharing !!!!!
@@sharonkatope9885 I never would have thought. Definitely gonna try, thanks for sharing !!!!!!
@Repent and believe in Jesus Christ that's incomplete.
Please add...
Acts 2:37
Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Baptism, in the name of Jesus Christ, is done...
For the remission of sins- Acts 2:38
To save us- 1 Peter 3:21
Acts 2:40, Mark 16:16
To wash away sins- Acts 22:16
To be reborn to new life- Romans 6:3-6
To clothe ourselves with Jesus Christ- Galatians 3:26-27
Because we believe in Him- Mark 16:16, Acts 19:5
Because Jesus gave Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven- Matthew 16:13-19
To fulfill the great commission- Matthew 28:18-19
Because Jesus came in His Father's name- John 5:43, John 10:25
Because Jesus is the only name that saves- Acts 4:12
Because we are commanded to do all in His name- Colossians 3:17
Because Jesus said to keep His commandments- John 14:15

Obey Acts 2:38, before it's too late!
Verse 39 says it's a promise, yours and mine!
Acts 2:39
For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
Thank you, Jesus!
@@sharonkatope9885 how much do you add to a recipe of this size?
Yes. Californian here. Brian is definitely a cake donut connoisseur. He's 100% right.
I'm a yeast donut guy. I'm with you on crullers though. They're pretty bomb. Also, mom-n-pop > chains...at least in Cali, king of the donuts. It's not a true donut experience unless a little Chinese lady with a bad attitude takes your order, then gives you like five free apple fritters.
Omg 🤣
Omg that experience truly is everywhere here in California lol
I agree…Cali is the King of Donuts! 😋 I’m from the Seattle area and I couldn’t believe how many donut shops were around.
Every new donut shop I visit I have to try the cinnamon twist, chocolate old fashion, and sprinkled cake. It’s how I measure my score
1000% agree CA is king of donuts - mom and pops are the only way to go. East coast people don’t know.
The glazed old fashioned is the GOAT. You need to learn how to fry and get the double edge, otherwise you got lame supermarket style donuts.
My mom always made the most amazing cake donuts - at nearly 86 y.o., (and since my dad passed away in 2013) she doesn't do as much baking as she used to. Her donuts were spice cake donuts - cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg in the batter. I may try this recipe with the addition of the spices.
I love the crunchy ridges on donuts, too, but for some reason, growing up in New England, commercially made donuts always had a smooth surface. Not nearly as yummy!❤️
Hi. Do you happen to have your mom's recipe. It sounds delicious 😋
🥺 I feel so bad for her and your loss. Losing people is so hard
I'm sorry for ur loss dude
Cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg sounds amazing!! My favorite cake donut is blueberry, but maybe I should say my favorite cake donut WAS, because spice cake donuts sound out of this world. Much love to your mom!!!
Lord bless your mamá. Her recipe sounds divine. 🍩🍩
This is my absolute favorite kind of donut! I agree with Brian, love the crispy split part on top and lots of the glaze. Yum! 🍩
He never talked about that like he said he would lol...but yes, yummy
Yes, me as well, nothing beats an old fashioned donut.
I watched this video in bed one night and made them the next day for my coworkers and now I’m adding an altered version of them to our brunch menu! You said your favorite donut is a cruller, and it’s mine too, specifically honey crullers. I’d love to see a video for them. Fun fact, crullers are what Auntie Em was giving the farmhands and Dorothy before the twister!
Lol! Now I have to go watch the Wiz. With crullers of course lol.
@@LADYKAT... I prefer “The Wiz”. But what I’m talking about only happens in the Judy Garland film.
It’s funny how simple things, like Brian finding joy in breaking the donuts apart, adds to the food experience. I know it’s stupid, but to this day, at almost 40, I love fruit snacks. And for me, I have to sort them by color. I’ve done it since I was a kid and now it’s just an unconscious act that makes me smile.
Jacob, OMG I do the same thing and I'm 62...
Stupid and quirky are not the same thing... I'd call that quirky, unless you're afraid of not doing it. Then it would be OCD.
Do you eat them from least favorite flavor to most?
I do that with pretty much every colored candies! And, yes, I eat them by favorite flavors last so it’s the last thing I taste😂😂
I love a little cinnamon or nutmeg in mine. This recipe looks incredible!
To me a pinch of nutmeg is a classic for old fashioned donuts!
We call them “sour cream glazed” donuts here in Canada 🇨🇦. Looks like a wonderful recipe!!!
That’s what I thought they were called! Old fashioned donuts are the cake donuts that are made without sour cream. Still yummy though! Ohioan here.
Exactly! 🥰 You said it right! 🤤😋
Sour cream glazed and old fashioned are my fav! When I worked at Tim’s I used to replace the biscuit for the sandwich with an old fashion donut since donuts were free for us 😅 toasted with butter 👌👌👌
My fav go to at Timmie’s
I have always known these as buttermilk donuts, suggesting you can make these with buttermilk instead of sour cream (well, of course you can, but how much buttermilk?)
This is what I love about classical donuts, that little bit of crunchy layer on top. I loved this recipe
You're the only cooking /baking show I watch where I HAVE TO try the recipes!!!!!
Old fashioned glazed donuts are some of the best donuts John! Especially when it is chocolate. This recipe looks delicious! 😋 🍩
So good!
@@PreppyKitchen i used a tad bit too much butter and it came out like a super super thick cake batter so should i just add more flour or stick with it?
Oh yummm🤤 I was gonna ask if u could add choc chips in it n how it would taste
More flour probably 🤔
@@danielbard8255 maybe. That would make it taste even better 😋
Yes, Old fashion donuts on the west coast have a ring ridge around them. Must be how they're cut or something. Can't wait to try these! My favorite are the blueberry ones and my favorite donuts are also Crullers! SO GOOD!
I always called them "wings" when I was growing up in the '70s/'80s in California. Not sure where I got that from. 🙂
This looks delicious! Old fashioned donuts are my fav too. Brian (and the boys) are lucky to have you making them such yummy treats all the time!
I made these OMG DELICIOUS 😋 Thank you for recipe I also dipped them in chocolate because my husband loves it but he also loved the glazed CAN 'T STOP EATING these delicious cake donuts 🍩
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I cannot fathom how John stays so fit looking while creating these high calorie delicacies! He must work out constantly or only eat a few bites of whatever he makes!
He has got to be giving away maybe his camera crew or neighbors. Yes John and Bryan are a fit couple.
He always says he teaches you how to make delicious treats to share with your friends and neighbors so maybe that’s what he really does 😊 I’d love to know his secret lol
Maybe he is just blessed with a high metabolism and can eat anything and stay thin!
Ikr. I'm struggling to find out how tf he is so slim and skinny after baking so much
@@amyh7070I love to bake too as it relaxes me and takes my mind off other things but I only eat a small amount of what I bake. The rest I give to friends and relatives.
I haven’t made doughnuts since I was in the military. They look great but I also loved the cruller doughnut growing up. Thanks for sharing Brian’s favorite doughnut 💗
my absolute favorite. I like them plain without the glaze very crunchy outside
john, i really appreciate the detail you go into. It helps me understand how ingredients interact with each other!
I just love the way you present your cooking. Your passion is clearly evident.
These look amazing. This is also my favorite donut. I don't even need the glaze that is a plus. Goes great with a cup coffee.
Thank you for teaching such great recipes 😊
Here in the mid-west they are called either "sour cream" or "old fashioned" and they have the grooves, but it actually makes them look like wings and those must be what Brian loves to pull off - I do the same. I LOVE THEM.
Yes, I'm with you and Brian on that!
Indeed, Yummy Goodness!!! 😀 In parts of the South they are affectionately call "HALO" DOUGHNUTS.
But, really they are those delicious Old Fashion Sour Cream Doughnuts with the craters and crunchy edges (wings)!
I don't know "why" they are referred to as HALO Doughnuts...perhaps, because they have that distinct crunchy "ring" around them OR perhaps, because they are "heavenly" delicious ???? Who knows, but they are absolutely (hands down) among my favorite doughnuts. *P.S. Shout-outs to the Mid-west!!! 😀
These are also my favorite donut. I love to add a bit of nutmeg to mine, which just pushes it over the top of deliciousness!
This is my favorite doughnut! And yes, the craggy edge is essential! This looks amazing!
Best donuts ever, topped them with a maple glaze. Thank you for all your great recipes!
The sour cream is genius, I finally have a recipe that resembles the lost recipe that was my Mom’s! Thank you from Canada!
Omg my mouth is watering just watching this. I haven’t had an old fashioned donut in a long time and now I’m craving them 😆. Thank you for the recipe! 👍🏼😋
I've just made these and they're beautiful! Best donut recipe I've tried by far!
Yummmm!! These look amazing John, thank you! I had a rough day, and watching this video made me happier. Thank you so much for sharing. I love old-fashioned donuts, especially pumpkin or blueberry cake donuts. Thanks again!!! Can’t wait to try making these. 💜
😳 Pumpkin spice! 😲🤤🥰
These are also my absolute favorite donuts, and I totally agree that the crunchy outer ring is the best!
👌👌👌👌👌👌
Brings back memories of visiting my grandma, she made them for breakfast! She was an amazing cook.
Truly an easy to follow and incredibly delicious recipe. Spectacular.
Brian has good taste! This is my favorite donut! Thanks for making them and sharing your recipe John!
Totally my all time favorite donut!!! I haven’t had one in quite a long time but I have a strong feeling that that’s about to change VERY soon!!! YUM
I'm French-Canadian and my mother used to make these only at Christmas with a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar. The house had a scent of Heaven! Yes, the donuts had ridges and they were perfect every time! She made them ''by eye'' and they were perfect every time. They looked exactly like yours.
My favorite too. So much so that I might even try making them. Brian is right about every detail. Your end result is perfect.
Those look absolutely AMAZING John! I love cake donuts. I think they are the best donuts 🍩 Whenever I visit a donut shop, I always like to have some cake donuts in the bunch.
Yay!! John's video. ❤️ can't wait to get my book, but I still watch the video every time I make John's recipes 🙃
Yay! Thank you!
Watched a few of your vids before and thought about subscribing; this one clenched it ! I actually think I can make these ! You do a great job answering and explaining the things that many would ask about, like the mixing and thickness of the dough, etc.
I like the fact that you are family friendly ,professional, and can be humorous without vulgarity.
Keep smiling buddy, you're doing a great job!
OMG! My favorite too. Thanks for the well tested recipe. ❤️👍🏼
I love the blueberry cake donuts from Krispy Kreme. I would love to learn how to make that.
My Son just asked me to make apple fritters, but I showed him this video, and we are making your donuts.. yummy I can't wait, I even have cake flour, lol.. Hugs from 🇨🇦🤗❤️
I can't wait to make these donuts, like your beloved Brian they are absolutely my favorite too! Thanks for sharing!
“My mom said I was brave.” 🥲 I literally lol’d. Love it!
I made these this morning. Outstanding. Thanks so much for sharing.
Ridges are a must to really be "authentic" old fashioned donuts. I would love to see you do these with lemon zest!!!
Yesssss!!
These too, are my favourite donut! The ridges that Brian is talking about, could very well be from a piping tip. I was taught to pipe out rounds onto a parchment square, which is then tipped out into the oil. I never knew old fashion donuts to be rolled out. But by the by...these look fantastic! :)
Like churros! They are piped. Cake donut dough is not that soft. Always rolled and cut. Ridges are from it bursting open when fried and the thinner ridges getting fried to a crisp
They look absolutely delicious, nothing beats old fashioned ❤️❤️👌
I like how genuine and cooking-show-y this is. One of the better cooking youtube formats I've seen.
Been seeing a lot of clickbait-y type vids from some certain German youtube channels with some creepy info gathering in their CCs. So this was refreshing.
OMG John, these look EXACTLY like they were purchased at our local donut shop here in Sacramento Cal. and we literally JUST came home from there, and I see this!! Definitely ridges here in CA. Plus when my husband Bruce makes donuts or a cake with this type of glaze.....two tbs. of cocoa to the glaze is a MUST!!! Mmmmmmmm. We would love to see you do a chocolate old fashioned with orange zest in the dough, with a chocolate glaze! Please? Stay great you guys....! I AM ADDICTED TO YOUR PEANUT 🥜BUTTER BARS!!!
Richard and Bruce in California
crullers are also my favorite donut! would love to see you do homemade ones!
I agree with Brian that the crunchy outer edge is the best! :) That is how they are made in the midwest too. Thanks for the great recipe
Old fashioned glazed donuts are my favorite! The flavor I love the most are Lemon followed by Chocolate. Your recipe looks absolutely delicious 😋
These look incredible! Here in Michigan, our old fashioned sour cream donuts look like this with the yummy glaze holding ridges. But majority of other donut varieties are smooth. Lemon filled are my favorite but harder to find. Apple fritters and cinnamon sugar donuts at the cider mill during Apple picking season are top tier delicious!!
I can bake almost anything, but I struggle so hard with fried dough. I try to control the temperature, but it always comes out dark on the outside and raw on the inside, so dense, not light at all. I hope I'll learn someday..
BTW, just made your oatmeal muffins with some blueberries, they are really good and so easy!
Idk if you’re budget allows, but they have small deep fryers that allow you to set the temperature so you don’t have to monitor it with a thermometer. I got one from Walmart awhile back and it fits about 3 donuts and it has made frying so much easier.
@@CaliGurl254 good idea, thanks!
My favorite donut! Love the crumb texture.
Your doughnuts were put together in perfection.
John!! Can you make a version of this as a raspberry old fashioned doughnut with lemon flavored icing ? Or vice versa? Maybe that would be amazing!! Love this! Thank you !
Wow that sounds so yummy!!
@@Lesflr ooh thanks ! Might be worth a try, but I wouldn't know how to approach it. Something to experiment. Maybe a good thumbprint cookie too like lemon thumbprint cookie with raspberry jam filling. I just like that flavor combo! lol
I think you could easily add freeze dried raspberries, finely ground, to the donut dough. Substituting water for lemon juice in the glaze would be perfect. Good Luck!
I second this, I would love to see a video made of this version of the recipe!! 💜 Sounds like a perfect summer treat!
@@coffeecake8835 oh thank you !! That's brilliant!
Chocolate or double chocolate doughnut recipe would be amazing. So please do a video on that. I have made so many of your recipes and they all come out amazing and perfect with your measurements. 👍🏼👍🏼
Yes, please share the chocolate doughnut recipe! I love your recipes and the tips you give and the variety of recipes you share. I can tell you add lots of love to all you make. That is by far your most special ingredient! OXOXOX . Tina from Topeka, Ks
You're making my mouth water! Can't wait to try this recipe!!! 😍🍩🍩🍩
Will definitely make this recipe
They look and sound delicious 😋
I love how you explain! A lot of knowledge and inspiring!!!! Thank U! ❤️🙌
That is my absolute favorite doughnut. Will definitely give them a try. Thanks.
The Bakery I go to, the donuts have lot of groves and crispy edges, which I really love. My favoorite one is a Maple Old Fashion or a Old Fashion Buttermilk Bar...
My favourite flavor? All of them! My mom made them for us when we were kids.
Oh my favorite too! We also called them sour cream donuts in the Northwest. So going to try this recipe! Thanks! And all of what you said Brian says about these is so spot on. My thoughts exactly.
Awwww!! They turned out SO BEAUTIFUL!! 💜🍩💜
I'm with Brian. These are my favorite donut ever.
John, these look amazing! I’m excited to make them. Thank you!!
My absolute favorite donut! Ill be making some very soon. I love your videos, your not only funny, entertaining but very informative. Thank you
Oh my, that crunch bite at the finish was great!

Yes! Here in Cali’ all old fashion doughnuts have crispy edges.yum!
Yes, old fashion donuts on the west coast have ridges around them. Old fashion donuts are my favorite as well. I can't wait to make this recipe.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Old fashioned cake donuts have always been my favorite and No one-that is no stores or bakeries make them properly anymore. I lost all my good recipes so I haven't been able to make them but now I can! My flavoring choice is a bit of nutmeg. It adds a warmth to the flavor. Also I prefer mine unglazed. So glad I stumbled across this ✌❤👍
Love watching you cook!
I’m trying your recipe right now! I’m so excited! I just hope I do a good job! 😄 Thank you for all of your fantastic videos! Love your channel. 🤩
Hey❤️ I may not know you personally however I care about you deeply because I know how much you mean to Jesus Christ The King of ALL CREATION . I want to tell you that Jesus Christ loves you so much, he died for our sins so that whoever believes in him wouldn’t have to perish in hell but instead have eternal life in heaven. You need to understand that HEAVEN and HELL are 1000% REAL they aren’t imaginary , and hell is a horrible place I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. God doesn’t want you to end up there he wants you in heaven and so he is giving you a chance to accept the sacrifice of his son Jesus Christ and be saved. Day by Day the world is falling apart because we are literally living in the last days of Earth there is no doubt or debate about it, Jesus Christ is coming faster then you think to bring judgement to the world and to destroy it. This really is URGENT, it’s NOT A JOKE ,Tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone, you can be alive one minute and gone the next, please take this opportunity to be on the side of Mercy confess your sins and wicked ways to Jesus , sincerely REPENT/turn away from them, ask for his forgiveness, and be baptized at a real bible believing church- ask him to enter your heart and to be your Lord and Savior before it is too late , truly believe in him and he WILL do it because it is his promise. It’s important that you seek the righteous and Holy path of the Most high God so that you may inherit eternal life and be spared of Hell fire. You can begin a new life in Christ and have a genuine relationship with him, please repent. Jesus changed my life and he will change yours too🥰, He is coming NOW! not SOON- when you least expect it!, therefore repent and make sure you are prepared. May the Lord be with you eternally💕🙏🏾
You are so fun 🤩 to watch,I love ❤️ all your recipes!!!btw those 🍩’s look delicious 😋
They look so delicious!!!! Those are my favorite!
I have to wait for a cheat day next month to make them- thank you for sharing!!!
Oh my gosh! These are my favorite. Hey John, there’s a place that used to be near me and they used to put a thick chocolate frosting on these. Love you!❤️
Mmm - those look beautiful! My favorites are old fashioned with a chocolate or maple glaze. Then comes a vanilla glaze, and a really good jelly doughnut is a joy too! And..cinnamon and sugar covered old fashioned can't go wrong either. Yes, how does he stay so slender? And crullers are truly wonderful too.
Perfection! I agree 100% with Brian on these ones!
I’m so excited to make this my favorite is old fashion with a chocolate on top and yes thats the best part breaking of the edges till I get to the middle 😍
My very FAVE type of donut!
I really like your vids. You are easy to follow and a great teacher. Thanks.
Thanks for this! I love them without icing, and they're just delish!
Hi John, I pity all your students having lost a great maths teacher but I’m glad to get brilliant lectures in cooking by you. 😅💐
This is my absolute favorite donut! I agree with Brian, love the crispy split part on top in Texas I have seen both types the rough top and rounded. Plus I would love to see a video on all of the different types of Old Fashioned Donuts. Thanks!!
So delicious and mouth watering. Thanks bro.
That was a good one!! Can't wait to try this with my son!! Thanks for posting!
These are my favorite donuts also. Soooo good.
Those are my favorite!!! Thank you for the recipe 😁
My fave! Mace is a superior replacement to nutmeg for my taste. Thank you for the demo.
Thank You so much for your recipe, my donuts were so good.
Thank you.
These are my favorite donuts. Knowing this recipe is dangerous! 🖤
I never heard of donuts like this. I hope to make them soon because they look amazing
