I absolutely love the King Kong remake and Flash Gordon. Great campy entertainment and still a lot of fun. Dino really gave us some amazing spectacle pictures and this was a fascinating documentary on the filmmaker. 👏
A great documentary about Dino De Laurentiis, his wife Martha, their kids and his legacy of films. Whether they are great, bombs or film favorites, Dino's name is synonymous with cinema. Although Dino and Martha are no longer with us, their daughter Dina is now the head executive of The De Laurentiis Company and carries the torch of fiercely guarding that same independence in maintaining the love of making stories and characters happen on the screen. A legacy lives on from a family that has love and loves making movies.

DeLaurentis once said that during the making of Flash Gordon he visited the set and was told to 'fuck of outa here' by mad English actor Brian Blessed who was famous for saying the immortal line 'GORDON'S ALIVE!...DeLaurentis said he was so surprised and Blessed was so crazy that ' I just fucked off outa da place'
Dino is an enigma; making the godawful King Kong remake, Flash Gordon and Dune, yet also producing La Strada, Serpico and the hugely underrated classic Conan the Barbarian. I would've still supported him had he not gone for the child friendly sequel, discarding the epic tone of the original.
Flash Gordon was a classic - and a massive hit on video.
De Laurentis also produce Death Wish(1974).

What a beautiful documentary about the man who made some of my favorite movies of all time. We have so much to thank the Italians for in the fields of art. music and cinema (and they make great shoes and cars too). Oh, and let's not forget their foot-ballers too. ;-)
If you are a young filmmaker looking for an idol, forget Lucas... Don't even consider Spielberg. Dino, or "Mr. D.", as he like many of us used to call him, is a man humble by his successes AND failures. Mr. D. was a working class producer.

I must admit...I suppose maybe she is that ideal 'type' of Hollywood, high powered woman, for whom maybe such considerations as 'love' doesn't enter into it...but I feel Martha De Laurentis must be hard as nails...the way she said at 44:10 odd 'he sucks the life out of me and sucks the life out the kids' in reference to Dino seemed a little too vehement to me to be a joke...I think its very revealing about the way she truly thinks...and a lot else of what we see comes through to me as something of a facade she's maintaining. Which I suppose it must be really. Very blatantly about the power of being Mrs De Laurentis rather than anything else...but I guess in a practical way she must have looked after him and she seems ok with her kids...so I suppose you have to be realistic about the reality of such arrangements. Oh well...interesting documentary and thanks for the upload.
