    Welcome back John. A brilliant video as usual. A really thoughtful and comprehensive discussion of bushranging and the tensions between the colony's social strata (officers and authority figures, large land owners, the common man (and woman) and indigenous people) over and possession and occupation of land is provided in James Boyce's 'Van Diemans Land: A History". Boyce points out that these tensions were also largely responsible for the move to the yet-to-be colonised lands of the Port Phillip District (aka Victoria) on the part of people such as John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner.

    Ah, memories! Although I now live in the USA, my family were from Tasmania and so that is where I moved to, from Melbourne...to Port Arthur; just imagine THAT culture shock back in the late 1950's! I had hoped this excellent presentation would have gone longer, but the places depicted, especially in the P.A. area were indeed a trip down memory lane for me. Thank you so very much for this wonderful video.

    I love the way you deglorify the bushranger. Since a child reading the history of Ned Kelly, I was always puzzled why bushrangers were held in such high regard when there were others who had done so much more for our society who go unheralded. Then there are others, such as Batman, who were deemed heroes while sating their own last for blood.
    Keep up the good work.

    Thank you for talking for us, we have so many stories, even today, from every day, to sad and mysterious, to a ufo flap in i think 1968,69. To ghost stories. And other than Facebook no one tells their stories that i can find. I've found great stuff like your video, and a few others but nowhere near as many , unless something bad happens 🤷‍♀️😮‍💨🙂✌️💞.

    Martin cash lookout is where the photos were taken from over looking "the neck" not at all eaglehawk lookout that over looks pirates bay and doo town, which was originally a hang gliding ramp... you walk up from the blow hole rd to Martin cash lookout.

    • @ForgottenTasmania
      @ForgottenTasmania  Před 9 měsíci

      I’ll look into that. Maybe the place nicknames have changed. Beattie titled the photo Martin Cash lookout and that’s the one I recreated. Without the trees there is a panorama view from the blowhole right around past the neck to where he swam across. But it’s called Eaglehawk lookout now. Many thanks for the tip, I’ve got to go down there again so I’ll check it out.
