    Just when you thought zombie movies were tired and creatively bankrupt, this one hits you hard in the feels and reminds you that sometimes you'll get a gem like this. Very few movies (whatever the genre) has managed to make me cry this badly and this was made possible only because of the father's growth as a character and the child being an absolute sweetheart (what an actress!).

      True. It's not even that they reinvented the wheel with this one. All of the elements are pretty much well known and seen before (and that even helps to quickly establish the scenario without tones of explanation).
      It's purely the perfect cinematic execution to tell this pretty straight forward story. Camera, FX, sounddesign, the pacing during cutting/editing, it's all perfectly on point. And on top you have these fabulous actors (playing well written characters), who let us bond so much with the protagonists.

    • @number1fool
      @number1fool Před rokem +18

      @@mrtveye6682 you almost get the sense that when they pitched the movie to get produced it wasn’t pitched as a zombie movie but a drama about a father, his daughter and fellow passengers struggle to survive on a train hit by sudden tragedy.

    • @mrtveye6682
      @mrtveye6682 Před rokem +8

      @@number1fool Right., It's always clever to have a underlying story that is relatable to everyone, that we know from "normal life". We have a father who is like a "work-zombie" and because of that, split up with his wife and disappoint his little daughter, and than has to grow under sudden unexpected circumstances (no matter if zombies, a natural disaster, an accident).
      Plus like in a lot of these monster/zombie/disaster movies, there's often the "message" that no matter how tough it gets, (at least some) humans manage to be even worse than the primary threat.

      When you say "tired of zombies", it's pointing to a common misunderstanding, though. Many people have exposed *themselves* (by their own choice) to basically any zombie movie that was released and then (afterwards) complained about there being too many zombie movies. That complaint came up a lot...but it makes little sense.
      For one, the zombies were never the problem, but just how badly written and produced most of those movies were. It's like people never cared to inform themselves of the quality of the films, before watching them. Obviously, many were initially hyped by the good zed films that popularized the genre (namely G.R. Romero's first trilogy). Those people then assumed that the cause for the good entertainment were the zombies, not the director/writer. Thus people flocked to anything with zombies and also hyped it up, as if gore and the creepiness of walking corpses are reason enough to get excited.
      Slowly came the realization that that's very shallow entertainment on its own, but never that the writing was bad, but rather that the zombie genre is bad.
      It has to be emphasized that the problem never lies with a genre, but just with the quality of entertainment, the latter of which is reliant on *good* writing and filmmaking.
      Same thing as is going on with the superhero or dinosaur (sub-)genres now. It's not the superheroes or dinos that are bad material for films, but just the horrible mindset of the producers, sticking to bad filmmaking/writing formulas.

    Those wild, unnatural movements from the zombies are because they hired break dancers (I think they're called bone-breakers) to play them, so they specialize in that. Also that kid (Kim Su-an is her name I believe) is one of the most incredible child actors since Linda Blair in The Exorcist. Like, I don't cry at movies too often, but she had my eyes welling up at her performance when she lost her dad. Absolute legend. Don't bother getting angry over this. There's no point.
      It's a fact that many people in the US refuse to watch anything dubbed or subtitled. Accordingly, there is a good market for remakes of successful "foreign" movies.
      Instead of worrying about that, you could look forward to an alternate version of a story you liked. Maybe there'll be enough differences to excite you in new ways.
      If the remake is just bad or whatever -> the easy solution is to just not watch it and you're fine.

      The problem with a remake of "Train to Busan" and the upcoming rumored remake of "Parasite" is that they both are heavy on their commentary of aspects of Korean society and those points in the movie are part of what makes those two movies so great, even if as a nom-Korean you aren't sure of people's actions in the movie. But those decisions by characters and overall commentary just won't work in a US setting due to different societal outlooks and behaviours by the characters.

      Completely true, but doesn't change what I said. Just because something is hard to translate well for everyone doesn't mean you shouldn't try.
      When there's a huge amount of people completely unwilling to widen their horizon to other cultures, what can you do about it?
      Of course, I'm not suggesting nothing else can be done about it, but whatever options there are to change this, they need to go parralel to remakes. The latter is a money-making opportunity that can't be ignored in today's economical state.

    I had a feeling that you would love this one, Kat. I've seen it a lot of times, and I still cry every time. They have impeccable timing on the music, and it hits me right in the feels.
    The only way to counter the effects of Train to Busan is to watch a comedy zombie film called Shaun of the Dead.

    Hi Kat!
    This movie just highlights the fact that in any emergency survival situation the greatest threat is going to be other people. Back in the early 2000s I was involved with disaster prepping (using the Zombie Apocalypse as a metaphor for any real world emergency.) It quickly became clear that while any amount of contingency planning or preparation would improve your odds in a short term, localised emergency, I did not have the resources to prepare for anything approaching TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We Know It.) However, in my Everyday Carry backpack, I did carry water (and purification tablets) a weeks worth of lifeboat rations, first aid kit (including tourniquet) paracord, hand cranked radio, etc. I'm ashamed to admit I even had stab/slash proof gloves and kevlar sleeves (no zombie bites for me!) and plans for exiting whatever urban area I was in with a minimum of human contact.
    This movie just brilliantly handled the way people react to totally unexpected emergencies and how easy it is for selfish instincts to endanger those around you.

    What I noticed is that depending on where the zombie bit, the transformation depends. like if they but one of the major blood vessels around the neck or face which the virus seemed to aim, they transform significantly faster than those bit on the hand (but again, the general speed also depends on the person's immune system too).
    Plus the usage of the girl's formal language to an informal nearing the end shows the growth of their relationship

    When "Parasite" was in the theaters, CZcams reommended "Train to Busan." I'd seen South Korean movies, so I thought I was ready. I HATE Zombie movies, but I was hooked when The Deer got back up. This emotional roller coaster movie left me drained. Kudos to the writer(s), director(s), actors, and especially the stunt performers for creating a Modern Classic.

    Wondered when you might get to this. This movie is the reason I still watch horror flicks. Most horror has gotten pretty tired, for me, but now and then ... this. Might be my 50th time re-watching the key points, via reactors, and still brought tears to my eyes. Very few movies (or TV shows) can do that over time. Thanks for letting us watch along with you. You're a gem, and one of the few (out of many) reactors I watch almost immediately when I see your thumbnail pop up. I think I'll squeeze one more Patreon into my tight budget right now. Cheers.

    7:46 The "magic system" in this flick is quite well done. Part of the success of the plot. Zombies are brutal, relentless and fast, but dumb, and provoked by basic stimuli, like noise and light. Easily fooled, hard to shake off...

    I see a lot of people mention the woman boarding the train without a ticket. In Korea, you need a ticket to get to the platform. The platform is like the boarding area of an airport. The train attendant's job is just to make sure everyone gets on the train so he wouldn't respond differently to hearing her jump on behind him.
