- Hey team CZcams - just some research on changing a rear oil seal on the venerable 3800 motor. The Series III and Series II 3800 use different parts for this, so the method between the two series may be a bit different.
Based on what I read, and looking at the actual parts that I purchased and was replacing, I consider what I did to be a more comprehensive and more correct than other videos covering the identical topic. This is no slam on anyone, in fact, I know I have simply forgotten to tell people info about particular things that may have been relevant to their success.
Anyhow, I hope you find this video helpful. - Věda a technologie
Great video, very informative. Just to add, the torque spec for the rear oil seal cover is 11 lb-ft first pass, then 50 degrees on second pass, as published in the service manual at Alldata.
For whatever reason couldn't find in Haynes manual paper edition. Thanks!
Quick comment about the plastic inserts, from the service manual: "Plastic inserts in the crankshaft rear oil seal housing are only used as an assembly aid and are not required for service." Mine were all cracked when I removed the rear cover so I discarded them. I think they just speed things up on the assembly line.
Thank god I was dreading having to chase those down at some kind of store or dealership 😅
I used form a gasket on the water seals. My surface is pitted due to a leak and rust. Hopefully it's fine.
Doing an 05 Buick at work pulled the trans. I have the engine supported from the top and there is only one other mount holding the engine in place. That mount happens to bolt to the oil pan. So I'm thinking I'll pull the pan after I put the transmission back in as I can't think of any good/fast/ ways to safely pull the pan right now. (flat rate at work )
Because I had the trans out, doing a swap, it was just as easy to pull the engine. Good luck on your project.
Question, is it possible to develop a coolant leak back there? Got water pouring down from somewhere between engine and trans.. no oil leaking. Everything up top/under hood is dry, looks like the engine side of the flex plate is damp. Saw a little coolant on bottom of plate, along oil/trans pans, bottom area of starter, etc. No obvious culprit with mirror and light, but its a tight area. Been trying to find solid info before I go ripping trans out for no reason. Thx
The rear main seal cover has a gasket. There are two coolant holes up high. Yes, they can leak if either the timing cover is pitted/corroded, or the seal has gone bad. But up higher the lower intake manifold gasket can leak down the rear of the motor, so you'd want to rule that out first.
Just did this..and yes the coolant enters the oil pan
Had to remove oil pan and clean
Thanks for verifying what I suspected. So the 'other guys' doing this work are sort of misleading by not cautioning people that can and will happen. I really appreciate the feedback.
Yeh I'm doing mine now, wish I realised but oh well needs oil change anyway,
Man ive did a lacrosse & i tell you its best to replace that metal cover it can become warp
..
Can you send a link for me to order one?
I'd use Fel Pro BS 40708 for a 2008 Lucerne 3800. For additional seals for the bottom of the motor, I'd go with drivcat.com/overlays/part-detail.aspx?brandId=FL&pNum=CS%209917-4&partType=Engine%20Conversion%20Gasket%20Set
good
I appreciate that, thanks!
Hey mate just replaced the rear main plate and the started the engine and the water went into the oil. Now can I drain the oil and water completely and start again and it will be fine or do I have to take off the plate again to fix it . Thanks
Hey can I ask you a question?
Sure, sorry, kind of late responding...what is your question?
@@elmarko9051 so I have a Buick LaCrosse 2005 it has the 3.8 3800 series 3 engine and my question is it leaks oil at the rear main seal which I’m sure but mechanic changes out seal twice and thought it fixed it but when I drove it home started leaking so you know what could cause that oil to still leak by..
@@gabriellencarnacion3310 crank surface could be scratched. Leak could be from cover not the seal. Seal backward seen that before. Cover mis-aligned. So many things. Hope this helps.
thanks for your input
