  • Ekai Kawaguchi (1866-1945) who loved Tsarang Ekai Kawaguchi is a Japanese Buddhist scholar known for his exploration of Tibet. Born in present day Sakai City, Osaka and a monk of the Obaku sect, Ekai traveled to Tibet in 1897 to explore the origins of Buddhism. He, entered Nepal from India and traveled up the Kali Gandaki Valley in search of a route across the Himalayas. He stayed in the Village of Tsarang for 10 months from May 1899 to March 1900, learning Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan grammar and rhetoric while living in the village chief's chapel The beauty of Tsarang summer scenery captivated him. In addition to his studies, he administered medicine to sick people and made them swear to abstain from drinking and smoking. The villagers deeply respected him and wished him permanent residence in the village, but their wish was not granted. On the day he left the village, over 100 villagers gathered to bid farewell to him. (By Naoji Okuyama)
