I went through selection in 77 and we had to do a 50 mile road march in 24 hours with a 75lb ruck. Run 13 miles and then swim 5 miles to qualify for scuba training. I’m 67 now and I can remember every minute of the 2 years it took me to graduate.

The hardest part is not ever trying. Take it from this old 82nd Panther J's, I regret giving into the pressure of staying stagnant in my military career evolution. I felt like I was giving up on my unit if I was to try to advance. Don't do that. If you want something, do the hard work, don't listen to the internal and external BS & try with everything you have in you to achieve that said goal! Don't live with the what if's. You only got one life, live it to the fullest and try to get what you want.. Adapt improvise and overcome by any means necessary! Be fear Chasers!

Yeah I had the same experience with myself and I think about it often. Now I’m in my early 40’s w/ 3 kids and will not allow them to do the same with their life choices
When I told my commander that I was going, he was against it and tried to force me to ranger instead. Luckily I had alot of friends in 7th and they helped me convince my commander.

I was cadre when we first brought the long ruck back. Candidates did not believe the board and thought it was a joke due to "gaming". Souls were crushed

A guy from my (aviation) unit went to selection and made it. He was super humble and helpful before, and he trained super hard before he went. He came back to finish his time in our unit before the q course and he’s still humble and helpful. I think being a team player is probably really important for selection.

Just got back from class 08-22 and got picked up. Team week was definitely leagues ahead of any of the other events for myself. Carrying upwards of 180 - 200 pounds on your back is unlike any other kind of suffering I have felt. Took a lot of guts for the guys there to keep on going, and I have an eternal respect for the dudes that got through it. Definitely be mentally prepared for that!

@SamS 101 honestly, there’s no two ways about it. It was. Especially for the distances we went. Each evolution took anywhere from 4-6 hours. You had to be there with a purpose or you weren’t going to make it through the mental fatigue.
@@username_3715 dezzani doesn’t ring a bell, but to be fair I didn’t know the names of probably more than half of the graduating members. They were strict about not using names and only roster numbers.

Whenever I went to a school and I started getting in my head I'd start asking myself "how many people have passed this before me?" to remind myself it's not impossible
"Revert back to your fundamentals" is huge for any military school. Ranger School was the same way. They tell you the exact steps to follow for setting up a patrol base, doing an ambush, etc. The military makes is "simple stupid"/"stupid simple" and does give you the "fundamentals."
I went through selection in 05 after sopc in 04. Hardest part of selection was the cold. I was the first class of 05 and it was so damn cold and me being from Texas, it was new to me. I graduated in 06 and went to group and one month later I was in Iraq. Loved my team time.
Trust in the process when it comes to land nav. 80% of all land nav is confidence. I felt the same way as everyone does when they first start, lost scared and not confident. Until I started trusting the process I started to learn that land nav ain’t too bad at all. As a team leader much later on seeing the same fear overtake my private. It felt good to step in and become the encouraging voice he needed to start his steps towards becoming confident with something he barely understood a few days prior. Confidence is key and as Buck puts it “Stick to your game plan”. RLTW

I was the former Eagle Scout that everyone followed when we had to do land nav refreshers. Grew up in the country and always loved land nav because I got to just walk around in the woods all day

When I was in ROTC, one could quickly tell who was from the city and from rural areas. Growing up walking in the woods just builds up a sense of the woods that made land navigation less intimidating. Being from Georgia, I was used to dealing with snakes when I went to Bragg. Benning and Knox had some nasty Land Nav courses.
An relatively safe way to practice land navigation is to go to a national park and just go find monuments. If you get in trouble, there are park rangers.
Snakes mess with a lot of people. They don't bother me, usually. Water Moccasins are a bit different. They are aggressive. But manageable. Find a local nature center and learn.
When my PMS found out I was not afraid of snakes, I suddenly became the snake handling teacher.

Hey, the one time a snake crawled between my legs -I was standing up fishing- I wasn't scared. I just looked down and there was the prettiest arrowhead I've ever found! You never know what you'll see in the woods. 🐍 👨!!

I went through SFAS twice. First time, wasn't ready (before desert shield) and got my ass kicked on log drills. 2nd time through was right after Desert Shield. Was much more prepared for it the second time around. Was crushing land nav, night land nav, the runs and the ruck marches, team week and the water cans, the ate up jeep. Constant watch on the board outside for the next evolution. Obstacle course was great but, I fell off of the obstacle where you have to climb the rope and it is wrapped around the pole up about 20 feet or so and the rope is wrapped around the smooth pole about 8 times and then down at a 45deg. angle...was exhausted and my hands let loose when kicking my legs over to the rope to descend. Leg folded back and i shook it off and finished but, the next major ruck, I was done and the pickup grabbed me and that was it. Found out back at my unit that I had torn my ACL in my left knee. That plagued me the rest of my career. So, made it through the gates and was snagged by the damn obstacle course. My unit, after the first time failing, let me train during duty hours. All I had to do was show up for PT. So, I would do PT with the company, hit the shower, eat an MRE for chow and hit the gym for upper body training. Would sleep a few hours in the afternoon and prepare for land nav points at Ft. Hood, then i would hit night ruck marches until PT the next day. SFAS did kick my ass and it may have been easier if I had been combat arms and did this stuff as a part of my MOS. Wish like hell that there was 'anything' to help you prepare. Took the PT test with the SF guy that visited the base...waited for orders and that was it. NOTHING to help you prepare. Internet and this video would have really helped. Hooooah!!!

@@1anre my MOS was 52E and no. Boy, when I was in the Navy and all of my schools were in San Diego, I heard about the seals. This was in 1985 and up to that point, even in the Navy, had not heard of them. Came time to re-up in the Navy, Gramm-Rudman kicked in and I would not have gotten my $30k bonus…so, my plan was to go SF. They didn’t offer (straight to an 18 preparatory platoon, or whatever it was at that time) to me at MEPS, so I took an MOS that seemed awesome with future plan of SF. So, it was a major deal to not make it. At least I had jump school in my initial contract. 😉🤙🤘🤘🤘

@@1anre firstly, I never wanted kids and always tell people that I am just too damn selfish. I never wanted a child seat in my muscle cars (71 Dodge Dart Swinger w/340 magnum…then traded for a ‘70 R/T Challenger w/440 magnum and traded that for a ‘71 Plymouth Roadrunner w/440 magnum and dual Holley 850 dbl pumpers) or my Corvette’s (‘81 and then a 2002 Z06)…ever. Would have been massively tacky 🤭 And as an added bonus, my wife, which I met while stationed in Germany three decades ago, feels the same way… more so at times. My career…hmmm. I loved the Navy but, did NOT want to give them six more years (with one year instructor and five at sea…for nothing) went in at the very beginning of a fiscal year…bonuses were stopped the day prior to my scheduled re-up. Got out and it sucked doing bootcamp again for the Army as an E5. My NATO TS came in handy in the Army, when I was stationed at NATO HQ. ‘That’ duty assignment was the highlight. Schooling was great in both branches, with San Diego being very, very fun for a single guy. Duty assignments varied and didn’t matter where assigned, if something bad happened or something in the Army needed power, a lot of power, we would deploy.

Hey there Buck , I’m not the biggest guy , 5’9 and a little under 160 but I’m stout and I got heart. Started the physical training handbook a couple weeks ago and just talked to my station’s recruiter today. I want to thank you for the in-depth content you’re putting out here for the guys that are serious about making this dream a reality! It really brings up the motivation a notch
My son just graduated q course. He’s 6’ on the dot. At graduation, there were many shorter guys. A captain on his RS squad was 34 and 5’ 9”.

I was fresh out of school in the Bundeswehr 2001 as an OTC, right as 9/11 happened. Before and during army, I played lots of Operation Flashpoint, where I learned land nav with map and compass. Land Nav was exciting. For one exercise we had a couple of minutes in a room with the map and waypoints and a sheet of paper and a pen. Then we had to do a whole day of navigation with our self-drawn map. That was fun. Night navigation was more difficult, but exciting as well. To be fair, we had no real treacherous territory to go through, just the average southern german woods. Wouldn't have thought, that a game was that useful after all.

Land Navigation was probably my favorite portion of osut, it was so peaceful being away from everyone and just wandering through the nature of georgia.

Take one day, task, meal, anything at a time is kind of like the military in a nut shell.
I did night land nav once, and I got lost. Couldn't find the point I was supposed to find. I started walking towards the left training area limit to re-shoot azimuth... mfer lucky me, found the only pond/lake in the training area and was able to re shoot azimuth to my next point, and took me straight to my next point and from there, I was able to get directly to my third point. Couldn't find the first one but made a 2/3 points which was enough to pass.
The hardest for me when I got selected was the trek. Body was totally broken down and for some reason I thought it was timed when it wasn’t you just had to finish. The first I time I went land nav was because it was summer/fall and everything was grown and thick that getting turned around coming out a draw was brutal. Winter time selection way better you can see trails less veggies previous to give you an idea that maybe your on or close to a point if you did the first part right

Land nav is no joke. I went through PLDC in August 2001 In Ft Lewis and land nav derped dudes from every MOS and unit. There was an SF E7 as an SGL.
I was going to my last point and got caught in the thicket, I couldn't move at all..... after what seemed like 2 hrs. I came out the other side (tore up) but was able to get them off and got the next day for "Foot Maintenance".... Also Sand babies with a Cadre that had tiny ass hands!!!! What got me selected was telling myself "IT CAN'T LAST FOREVER".....
im a scout thinking about going through SF selection and that idea about shooting an azimuth to a high location and getting your pace count back and then finding another spot and doing the same thing to figure out where you are in an insanely smart idea I've been in for 4 years and never heard that. ill remember that, thanks

Friend's dad went through and he said for him the hardest part was log rolling in the sand pit. Said he was dizzy and nauseous for two after. He eventually broke his femur and was medically retired
In 2003, we didn’t do Team week events, we did a Land Nav Trek… my first leg was 25 kilometers. When it was done I was just under 93 klicks. That took a while to recover from. Hardest part is not getting hurt. My earlier attempt at SFAS, my ankle was purple for 2 days. I jumped off the truck and immediately rolled my ankle. Luckily it was at the end of that days training….. 3 days later I was dropped for my knee.
Down Pilot and the Mulan carries are unanimously the hardest events in sfas!
During the Mulan carry, your team will have an odd number of metal buckets filled with sand and a bunch of 10' metal poles. Just like the dysney movie lol

Don't mention it during Basic. Learn to be an Infantryman while you are there. Try as hard as you can.

What's the latest? Did you get selected?
I've been studying for the asvab and also for land navigation with a digital practice course online. It's fun, but man when I look out into the woods I can only imagine how hard it's gonna be to identify landmarks and to find ways around thick vegetation in the real world. As always thanks for the information guys
It can be tough, but you need to master pacekeeping and compass usage. In thick vegetation, without many landmarks, the places you can use to orient yourself are super limited so you need to know where you are at all times, and you can do that by mastering pacekeeping.

we did down pilot for Cav Cup at Fort Bliss. The pilot missed the extract point and we had to walk out the pilot 12 clicks across that big ass desert. Luckily it was at night and not so hot.

hardest part of SFAS were the sand babies, where our team utterly fell apart. There will be some event which will completely destroy you or your team. the hardest part is processing and bouncing back from the mental and/or physical disintegration.

Buck! Did ya’ll try the Trans Catalina Trail?? I havent seen the vid yet, but I’m guessing thats what you guys were talking about at the beginning of this video. I did it a couple years ago with an alice pack and a couple fishin rods. Ass-fckn-kicker for sure! I did it from north to south (two harbors down to avalon) and the hill heading up to the flight line was an intense gut check!
The hardest part of Selection for me was my fibula in my right leg being broken through log and rifle pt, the 12 Mike ruck, star course, and team week. Eventually got med dropped in the middle of team week. Kinda sucked.
How did that little bone break?
@@vlun1215 I had stress fractures real bad from all the rucking we did on pavement during SOPC. I guess one eventually gave way and snapped in half

@@Strizzle81 I’m can’t remember the exact frequency. That was back in ‘08. I think we alternated days, run/ruck most of the week. Always a minimum of 6 miles. Sometimes a little more. 35-45 pound rucks. Nothin crazy. The most important thing is that you don’t break yourself off before you go to selection. Your mental will take you a lot further than your physical. In selection, first, don’t quit. Period. Don’t get integrity violations. If you’re running or rucking, always try to pass the guy in front of you. One dude at a time. Be someone everyone likes. And when in charge be in charge. If not, be a stellar teammate. During land nav, pay attention to the classes they give you prior to the star course and you’ll be good.

I must be twisted because i loved the land nav, something surreal and peaceful about cruising the woods at night alone like that. It hurts, it sucks at times but being 50 at Ft living room now getting out of bed hurts and sucks at times 😂.
Can you guy make a video how long and what kind of preparation you guy had done prior to selection e.g rucking, running, swimming, landnav etc and what else do you guys do?

@@ICALLBS-tb2kx Bitter sweet update, but its not an ending. 21 day non-select. Learned a lot about myself. 2 year return. Group isn't doing waivers so they said to go back to the regular guys, remember how much you hate it, but go for schools, get skills, etc. So I'm following their advice. I'm challenging myself with marathons, Bataan Death March, I go to Ranger School in a couple on months and I deploy next year to the middle east (i'm sure you know I can't say where). SO again, it's not an ending, just part of the long road.

@@ICALLBS-tb2kx in terms of when I can return to SF AS, that kind of waiver. You see I was given a 2 year return, but after 1 year it can be waived for an early return. However, the Group I'm trying for is not going to give anyone waivers.

Hilarious but true story. Hardest part of landnav for me in 11b AIT was to find the item/flag when you hit the points. I sometimes waited for others to arrive to find it. I am a city person and can’t find shit in the woods
Then did you either plot your points right or use your land nav to actually find it. Because that’s what land nav is and taking yourself straight to the point
@@jakecarmack6250 the points were right. I just could not find the flag or object to be collected when they were 8 ft up on a tree among other trees. People came to the same point found the flag

I ended up walking to Aberdeen one night because the cadre gave me a wrong grid coordinate. They came and got me in the morning. 😂

Kurt you mentioned you were at Ft Riley, are you a BRO bro, I was in the 1st ID Foward in Germany, 13F with 2/5 FA HHBin the 80’s as the USSR was starting to break up, I had ETSed right before The Wall came down.
It takes a special breed of human being to make it through this and other military elite training courses. MIND OVER MATTER! If you don't mind... it dont matter. 😉Im retired military. Retired in 2012. During my overseas tour in Panama I was selected along with a few other soldiers in my unit with excellent PT scores to attend Air Assault school.
The black hats were out of Ft Drum/10th Mountain Division. I really felt I was in pretty good shape. I was young and really wanted to earn that air assault badge. Well, sorry to say I failed miserably. 😮💨 I, among a few other selectees, were dropped like a bad habit on ZERO DAY and had to do the walk of shame back to our cars while the others rode back to the barracks in buses. 😭 I felt that was the longest walk ever. The entire time I am thinking how my chain of command was going to react/treat me. They busted my chops for some time but encouraged me to give it another go if given another opportunity later.
I don't recall where the others failed but I was unable to negotiate the "tough one" obstacle. Got a trolly horse while I was trying to climb over this log. Hung there like a possum in PAIN rethinking my life choices. The black hat mocking/yelling at me the entire time. I couldn't push past the pain and hold on any longer. Dropped like a rock to the ground. I was given another chance to negotiate the obstacle but slipped down the rope as soon as I jumped up to grab it. NO-GO! Not making excuses but that rope was slippery as hell and THICK. My child sized hands could barely grasp this thing. Was still dealing with the pain from that trolly horse.
The entire time we are waiting to negotiate an obstacle we are being smoked. Flutter kicks, push ups, even three second rushes. All the while chanting "AIR ASSAULT, AIR ASSAULT. In '97 I was reassigned to Ft Bliss Texas. I had been defeated mentally. Throughout my 20 year career I never contemplate giving it another go. Regret it now of course. How often does someone get bit by a poisonous/venomous snake in selection?
Make sure you ask the supply guy for some grid squares before you do land nav. Tell him you want the good ones not the old ones that where cleaned with propwash!!
How do GBs deal with constantly evolving priorities. What are concrete examples of prioritize, plan, and execute. If you're able, how that changes depending on what level of a detachment you're in. What difference might look like in prioritization for an 18A, vs an enlisted's plans, etc...

XD "poisonous snakes". They're venomous. You ingest or consume poisons via mouth or skin. Venoms are injected by the animal biting or stinging you. If the animal forces it into your body, it's likely a venom. Also, often common water snakes, which are not venomous, are confused for the venomous cottonmouths (water moccasins). They look somewhat similar to anyone unaware of the specific differences.
What is the deployment cycle like for SF?
3 time non select. Never told why. Each time was shitty and fun.
11 B, never had a problem with land nav.
Check this out. I was field artillery in the army (25th I.D) hardly ever did any land navigation. 5 years after my E.T.S, I joined an infantry National guard unit. This was in 1994. All you saw were C.I.B’s, E.I.B’s, combat patches from cavalry, big red 1, 82nd, 101st. We had one guy from 75th ranger regiment who said he was in Mogadishu. All those guys went to P.L.D.C in Utah. They all failed land nav. Didn’t graduate. Me,(gun bunny), went also and I was 1 of the very few who graduated! Passed land nav! But I had the best time in my wannabe 6 years in an infantry battalion. Then I transferred to a transportation company in 2003. Deployed to Iraq 🤦♂️.

After classing up for rasp as an 11b and getting dropped for a mistake on my part I am getting to be too old to be a private in ranger regiment if I were to try out again .. do you think going to selection and being in group is still worth it now that gwot is over …?

Hey Buck, I'm a little late to the comments. What's a good 12 ruck time with 35lbs dry? I just pr mine at 2:30:00. Is that a competitive time for selection, or mediocre?
pretty good man. I'd add a minute per lb added for an estimate. but selection is on super hilly and soft sand terrain. I'd say 2:20 or less with 45 is a SOLID base.
How do I enter as a special forces soldier, and specialize in sniper, I have a good aim?
On land nav what happens when you have a half dozen or so points within 100m or so of each othwr and none of them are yours and your land nav skills say your on target your at a point but its the wrong one? That happend to me in basic
