    I was lucky enough to hear this live at the premiere. A banding ‘moment’ which for me will NEVER be matched.

    A few years back I went to a pre-National's concert at Regent Hall and a proud David King called them "the best band in the world". It was no idle boast. He meant it.

    I'm still not sure how a band can be that good. Such a team, incredible precision and energy.

    Proud to say I've been taught, in some form or another, by three people in this band, and they made me a better player and person. If I can become one iota of the players they are that would be a win in my book!

    Best band ever I reckon, Cory wouldn’t beat them if that band was around today

    • @elliotharrington5632
      @elliotharrington5632 Před 4 lety +3

      I can disagree with that considering the fact that cory beat them often when they where really good, nevertheless they where and still are a cracking band just not as good as they used to be.
      They go by the name Hammond Saltaire band now, I find a bit of an odd thing that basically all of the good players left after the lost the sponsor.

      @ElMaestroRyan Před 4 lety +6

      Elliot Harrington not all that often, I’m quite sure I’ve seen a clip of Bob Childs himself saying “when YBS showed up we knew we were after 2nd place, it was up to them if they won or not” or words to that very similar effect. Don’t get me wrong Cory were very good (and still are) but this band was another level to anything when they were in the mood (and they almost always were).

      Like football teams, impossible to compare bands. Contest results don't tell the whole story. We're at the mercy of adjudicators and "slips" on the day. But yes, YBS certainly right up there.

    • @TheSproutarian
      @TheSproutarian Před 3 lety +3

      Agreed. None of the bands these days could beat YBS, Britannia under Snell, Dyke under King or Parkes, and Fairies under Parkes.

    • @bassfunkypenguin
      @bassfunkypenguin Před rokem +1

      @@Mark64W As fantastic as Alan is, he's one player. With YBS the strength in depth around the entire band is amazing to say nothing of the cast of principal players, combined with Dave King's vision and musicality...I would be surprised if we see a band like this again. I listen to this, Concerto Grosso, Spheres, and feel that this combination of players and MD was a real Concorde moment.

    Amazing! Wish the percussionist would have played the suspended cymbals with quality and the end. It was a great let down of an otherwise other-wordly performance.
