      I have a dish on my roof I'm not using, so I'd like to try this. I found the UHF connector you used, but what type of cable is that, it's not standard. I dont want to waste money on the wrong thing. It looks like RG-8 U ham radio cable.... is that correct? Why dont you tell us in the video ?.. Now I'm on my knees yelling " STELLA..STELLLLA"

    @DobieTanpaw Před 7 lety +9

    Some hints for the Cantenna... don't use the hot glue. The antenna connector should have a good solid ground to the can for best performance.
    Also, it might be better to use an N-Type or SMA connector (Or even a BNC) rather than an SO-239. SO/PL-239 connectors don't work very well at frequencies above 500 MHz. They are primarily designed for VHF-Low through Low UHF (30 Mhz - 400 Mhz)

    I've got bad news. There's no such thing as an HD antenna. A TV antenna is a TV antenna. Any TV antenna will receive HDTV. ANY piece of wire will receive HDTV. It's just a marketing ploy to make you think you have a special antenna.

    • @jesshadfield3566

    I made a parabolic mic with mine more than ten years ago. Having a smooth shiny surface works for audio as much as it does for light. I used a homemade shotgun style mic and fine tuned it with a slide rail then set screw it into position. I used a signal generator through an amp as the signal source to tune it with. I can hear people soft talking at about 300 feet, depending on the wind. A thick "foamy" is a must for distance. Later I got more technical by adding a speech processor and digital audio filter and headphone amp all mounted right on the backside in a weatherproof metal box from Radio Shack. Focusing for audio is very close to focusing for light. Well worth the effort if you like eaves-dropping like I do. lol.

    I used to work on antenna design many years ago, the idea of a cantenna is not new, but it does work. The SO-239 connector, otherwise known as a "UHF" connector, is a very poor connector. Back in those days, in the early days of radio, 400-500 MHz was ultra high frequency, by today's standards, it's nothing. There are many connectors better at 2.4G than a good o'le uhf connector. Better choices are, SMA, N, BNC, and even an F connector. Attaching the connector to the can with hot glue, a very bad idea. That connection has to be as perfect as you can get, at least use four screws with nuts or even solder the connector to the can. The distance from the back of the can to the center point of the probe is very important. The length of the probe also important, as you illustrated.
    All microwave behaves using the principal of PFM, you can investigate PFM, I'm sure it's in text books somewhere. - Jim

I and my colleagues had spotty service so I made a similar device using a the concave bottom of a can and cut up my longest charging cord. Placed it from a calculated focal point from my dish I ran the cord to my phones antenna and BOOM i had service. They didnt believe it so I made calls and received messages as I was dialing the numbers, other soldiers came by and used it to improve their service.

    Thank you for making this video. I've been very interested in electronics and my room does not get good wifi. I'm going to try this out and see if I can get at least a tiny bit stronger Wi-Fi. You are a really smart guy and don't listen to the haters.

    It used to be a thing to cover one with foil, attach a grow light, and hang it in a closet. They fit great and reflect plenty of light to produce healthy plant or two.
    Just one of the many skills from my younger days not applicable to my current life.
