- Swatching Schmincke SUPERGRANULATION WATERCOLOUR paints (Tundra set), PLANNING & Koala painting
Hi Guys!
This week I have been testing out a few new art supplies, swatching out new paints and planning (and painting!) a cute koala in watercolour. I thought I'd share this whole process with you in todays video as some of you had asked me to so I hope you enjoy this slightly different style of video. I love watching other watercolour artists paint but I am often curious as to how they decided on colours and techniques so let me know what you think and I might make it part of future videos too.
Thank you so much for watching
Take care
Sarah

When I look at a tree I just see brown. So watching this video helped me to be able to see that there are many more colours in trees. And the koala. Thank you
This is the best set of all so far 👍🏻
Thank you for this. It really helps to see the planning process and hear your thoughts on matters like background choices.
So beautiful! I enjoyed the process very much indeed.
Thank you so much!
Love the painting. Well done.
Thanks so much 😊
Fun video! Thanks for the peek into your process. I was pleased to see you didn't add leaves/background. I love the calligraphic shape of the finished composition.
Thank you Rebecca! I'm getting mixed feedback about the background but I'm glad you like it as it is 😊
hi Sarah! this koala painting is soooo adorable!!! I'm not painting animals so much and I love watching others when they do ;) enjoyed this one! beautiful koala and the tree branch 👏👏😍✨
Thank you so much 😊
Wow your link just saved me £40 ☺️ just when I’d missed the super granulation sale by 2 days. Phew. Your painting is really wonderful. I haven’t seen many people make these paints work well in a painting.
That's great! So glad you liked the painting too! 😊
It’s handy these paints come in a 5ml tube so you can try them out. I’m thinking of trying a set. 🤔😊 lovely painting, thank you for sharing 🙂
Thank you Gillina 😊
This is so exciting and helpful. I'm a new subscriber and love your explanations as you you work along. It's perfect😊
Thank you Mary! Welcome to the family! 😊
So.... I love love love my tombow mono zero and i keep a small emery board with it to neaten it up if it gets smeary or I need the edge sharp again. But I've also recently fallen equally in love with the koh-i-noor 6312 pencil eraser for pulling out fine details like hairs and whiskers. Although I haven't tried it on activated graphitint, i might just dig mine out and give it a go now. Lovely vid and sweet koala! ❤
Thank you Heather! I must look into the koh-i-noor eraser as I've not heard of that before 😊💐
Ooo Sarah, I love those tundra paints. Steve over at the mind of watercolor did a gorgeous background using them and I gasped at the beauty of the color separation. I may have to splurge soon on some. Thank you for sharing your lovely Koala 🐨 painting. He’s adorable. Blessings to you.
Beautifully painted and I love the effect of the granulated paints, especially on the tree.
Thank you so much 😀
I love all your paintings n specially your colour mixing paintings. Plz do more of them they are very educational. And can you consider doing a black swan painting. I’m struggling to do one.
Thank you Dilini! I would love to do a black swan painting so I will add it to my to do list 😊
Thank you sooooo much
The branch looks so real! Thanks for the glimpse at the planning stage as well…it’s always neat to see what goes on behind the scenes.
Thank you Joey! I'm so glad you enjoyed it 😊
Such a beautifully done video. Love this piece! Thankyou for sharing your process💗
You are so welcome Lindsay and thank you! 😊💐
If anyone is looking for the supergranulating 5ml sets in the US, Cheap Joe's has them. I just set up a set of the most common granulating pigments used and have been mixing either replications or unique shades. Also added a few I already had, for example Buff Titanium does really cool things mixed with one of the darker colors. I find I'm liking them for backgrounds since they give a pixelated "macro lens" effect to close up florals and animals with no effort at all. The best way to get that awesome separation is to mix them into a cream or milk consistency, stir well, then apply that to wet paper in a haphazard fashion. Stir each time you go back for more.. the stirring mixes all the various pigments together. If you do a traditional flat wash they tend to dry in a gradient as the heavier pigments stick and the lighter ones get carried down or across the paper. Blooms work very well.
Wow! I will definitely be trying this out! thank you 😊
@@SarahNewburyArt I find some of the most useful to be potters pink pr233, mars black pbk11, mars brown pbr11, cobalt teal pg50/pb28, ultramarine blue pb29, viridian pg18.. go by the pigment codes because they have different names in different brands and in some cases the names are given to a totally different pigment or combination. They all have very distinct colors that show up really well mixed with other granulating shades or even regular colors that are a different hue. If you mix them with the transparent flat colors those wind up in the background and the granulator pulls together in clumps.. if you mix two granulators they tend to clump together or separately (depends on the pigments chosen) with a light background. You can also mix the Daniel Smith primateks in the same way.. Kimberly Crick (YT, website, and patreon) has figured out a bunch of them. For example the pbr11 is the key for most of the DS fancy greens. Serpentine is phthalo blue (pb15), nickel azo yellow(py150), and a touch of pbr11.. for Apatite add a bit of pbk11 to that mix.
This is really helpful, thank you so much!
Now there is one I cán try :P Im not much of a granulating fan. I know most wc artists are but I somehow get an itch from granulating paints.
I didn't used to like them either but some subjects really lend themselves to them. Scratch the itch and give them a try! 😊
@@SarahNewburyArt I do use it sometimes when I want the easy foliage effect wich happens with cerulian or an ultramarine but I often forget it and after second layer I tend not to like it.
Hello Sarah, I cannot say it often enough, you are an amazing artist. I saw your post on Instagram and I couldn’t wait to see your painting larger on my computer. I hope you know that I believe you are truly inspirational and such a lovely person. I am having trouble seeing the koala, I hope that you will look at this painting and work on a background, after seeing your reference for the painting, I believe that you can create an amazing background either the green from the reference or a lovely granulated blue to keep to the theme of the paints! My Gran introduced me to watercolor painting and she did not use granulated paints. I thought that I had bought an inferior paint or that there was something wrong with it! I was told at the art store that it was a feature of the paint I bought NOT a defect. I have enjoyed using granulated paints since “discovering” them and I feel that they can enhance a painting. I am glad that you are branching out with your videos! I hope you continue to create this kind more often. I would rather listen to you talk as you paint or a voiceover rather than a musical selection. You are so knowledgeable and I believe that you impart so much during your videos, I want to get as much out of the time I spend with you as I can, thank you for sharing your art journey with your viewers. Please take care, be safe and enjoy the rest of your day.
Hello! Thank you for your lovely compliments. I really appreciate them. I think so far as the background for the koala goes, had I been more decisive I should have painted a wash at the beginning- like I did for my zebra painting.... I'm a bit worried about ruining it now! So far as video production goes, I really enjoyed sharing a bit of the behind the scenes footage before I started on the final painting as I don't know many artists who do that. It's something I 'd like to include more. I have been trying to experiment a bit with editing as my time is limited at the moment- hopefully I'll be able to find something that works for everybody. Take care 😊
Well executed painting. I enjoyed watching your process of swatching, rough sketching, deliberating about the background and testing any additional mediums. Did the graphtint pencil accomplish what you hoped for the koala's ear? It's seems to blend out quite easily. Beautiful painting.
Thank you DeeAnn! The graphitint pencil was interesting to work with but I think I need to do any erasing before I add water in future as it wasn't as effective as I'd hoped. Take care 😊
