James, your video was an eye-opener for me! I've been searching for a good e-ink device to enhance my productivity and reading habits. Your insights into various pocket-sized e-readers were incredibly informative. I'm intrigued by the Hisense A5 and A9 models, especially since I'm not a fan of Amazon's Kindle ecosystem. Your channel is a goldmine of tech advice, and I appreciate your commitment to providing thorough and unbiased reviews. Keep up the great work, and I'm looking forward to your future content!
i’ve been looking for different e-ink devices all over the internet!!!! very happy to run into your channel, loving the content. i’m from brazil and kindle still the most popular device when it comes to e-inks & e-readers… really hoping to see this device in the markets around here soon. xx
I've had a nook simple touch since it was launched. What 12 years ago now? Something like that. It's battery has been replaced and it's screen is a bit worse than it was when it was new. But it's served me super well and I love it. It's not hardly a top of the line device not by any stretch. But it was easy to root. Overclocking it and installing a few custom apps really has made it continue to be fast enough and equipped well enough to serve it's purpose. I keep a Mobiscribe at my office. It serves as my work ereader and a note taking device. But if I'm taking a trip someplace and I want an ereader a plane or bus or train trip? The Nook is coming along. If I'm going to the beach? It's again the nook. I've gotten my money out of it and if it was lost, or stolen, or rendered nonfunctional at this stage of things I'd be ok. So yeah I can safely say I have no desire to use an Amazon device and really never have.
Bought a Kobo Nia personally and I love it! It doesn't have quite the same store as a Kindle but you can move over any ebook from anywhere onto it and it's great!
Bought a hisense touch two days ago, glad to know I made the right choice. Replaced my smartphone with a 903kc and wanted something to replace my mobile entertainment. Thank you for all the tech inspiration
Did you have a problem with audio that sounded super compressed? I've tried playing it off spotify and music i've downloaded and it sounds like I'm running it through a bitcrusher
In my country, Amazon started to sell kindles below the cost os production, making every other company stop selling e-readers due to the financial loss they were getting, so our only accessible option of e-reader is kindle and that's pretty sad. Hope someday I'll get the oportunity to import one that I can write in
I know this is a late reply, but if you wanted to, the open book project is a DIY e reader that you can assemble using off the shelf parts :) I know soldering is not for eveyone though and components vary wildly in price across the world, but thought it was a cool option you might not have heard of!
I bought it the exact same moment i saw it in your live! Been using it not that much though since i’ve been basically always home since then so just been into paper books and kindle, but it’s a must have of the days i go to the university! Not difficult to setup at all and for what it is and what it is supposed to be, works great. Maybe a little bit overpriced, but fine
Literally the type of video I was looking for. I've been researching into pocketable e-readers lately and narrowed it down to either the entry level inkpalm 5 you mentioned or the hisense touch (though probably the lite version). What made you jump from the inkpalm 5 to the hisense touch and what's the battery life like on it (I've read the battery life on the inkpalm 5 isn't that great).
I have the inkpalm 5. I like it, but would rather have the hisense touch if I'm being honest, but the Hisense is pricy! Inkpalm's battery life is...okay. I get several days out of it with light use. A useful feature is that it turns off wifi everytime you lock which helps save battery in standby. Another con for me was that it came with no english out of the box, so I had to sideload an app to translate everything into English for me. Not the end of the world though - kind of a set it and forget it thing. Honestly, my biggest gripe with it is that it's too wide! lol I wish it was more narrow to make holding it more comfortable.
Personally I'm a fan of the Onyx Boox Nova line of devices. 7.8inch(19.8cm) screen is the perfect "book size" for me. They also come with a proper stylus, so you can use it as a notepad. They come with Google Play support as well so you can install basically any ebook or news app(or game) you want. They aren't cheap since they are basically Android Tablets with expensive eInk screens, but they are so worth it. The only thing that really bothers me is that they still only come with 32GB of storage. At least put 64GB in there, the cost difference these days is minimal. PS: They now have versions with some color support. The colors aren't very vibrant, and you do sacrifice the black and white performance(turning on the two-tone side lighting helps negate this though), but it is cool to have.
hm, i feel like the nova line is a bit out of place in the model line. i think the leaf 2 is a better product at the same price point which doesn’t make sense, the leaf has a way sharper, clearer screen and page turn button buttons, sd card slot. only advantages of nova line is the ever so slightly larger size, better performance (which for reading is irrelevant), and the color option which for most people isn’t worth it
@@supreme3647 For me that near inch difference in screen size is a big difference, and the lack of stylus support is a turn off too. It is dumb that the Nova still doesn't have a MicroSD slot or larger storage options though. Also, while the Color version isn't as good at mimicking BW paper as a BW model, they have the Nova Air2 which is BW and has the same DPI, and hence sharpness, as the Leaf2.
@@japzone screen on the nova 2 just doesn’t look as good as the leaf 2 though for some reason, my friend has the nova 2 and side my side it’s pretty clear, try and find a video online and you’ll understand, i agree with the stylus thing but then again stylus is nicer on a bigger screen (10.3 inch +) imo so it isn’t a massive deal breaker, i do agree that the extra screen is nice, wish the leaf 2 was 7.8

Got one of back in 2022 too, but I kinda wish I got the a5 for the cellular data. Carrying around my phone and my e-reader at the same time was kinda clunky and I never trained my instant gratification, so when I got bored, I kept grabbing my phone instead of my e-reader lol. I would like to just carry the e-reader and not take my phone places, but I do need my phone for emergencies and if my family calls. How do you go about this? Do you carry both?
My only grudge with these E-ink smartphones is that they’re region locked to Asia. Living in South America just makes them so hard and expensive to acquire, and even if I could import one the radio bands are not compatible with my region’s bands… :/
just a question out of curiosity, i do believe you highlight texts and quotes from a book using that ebook. where do u transfer those after? do you write it on a ntbk or do you use an app? :0
Just bought myself a Kobo Libra 2 the other day and now this video is making me wonder if I fumbled hard. Do you actually use your compact e-ink devices for things other than reading/listening to books? Like does it have a precise enough touchscreen to take handwritten notes with a stylus or something? Or is that a job left to bigger devices like the boox/remarkable tablets?
Personally, I find anything smaller than 10-11 inches too small to comfortably take notes on. I don’t use my e reader devices for anything other than reading. I don’t think you fumbled at all - I much prefer the size of my 6” e readers.

got a kindle paperwhite and a kobo elipsa. they work fine but your devices look interesting, definately more pocketable.
Your content is amazing
what ereader would you recommend for standard size ereader?
My only grudge with these E-ink smartphones is that they’re region locked to Asia. Living in South America just makes them so hard and expensive to acquire, and even if I could import one the radio bands are not compatible with my region’s bands… :/
Mas me fala ai, você comprou algum e reader? Se sim, vale a pena comprar mesmo morando na America do sul?
just a question out of curiosity, i do believe you highlight texts and quotes from a book using that ebook. where do u transfer those after? do you write it on a ntbk or do you use an app? :0
i’m fairly certain he uses syncthing, he says so on the blog post.
i remember now thx ;)
does the inkpalm display japanese fonts when reading in japanese or does it display chinese fonts for kanji?

what type of books are you reading and or would recommend?
hey james,
really nice video!
could you please tell me where you get your e-books from?
I just discovered your channel after buying a kindle, and yeah🙂
Bro love your videos I was just watching another video in the same channel
what watch are you wearing?
Just bought myself a Kobo Libra 2 the other day and now this video is making me wonder if I fumbled hard. Do you actually use your compact e-ink devices for things other than reading/listening to books? Like does it have a precise enough touchscreen to take handwritten notes with a stylus or something? Or is that a job left to bigger devices like the boox/remarkable tablets?
in the exact same situation as you rn, except I plan to keep my libra 2 and maybe buy a hisense touch
Personally, I find anything smaller than 10-11 inches too small to comfortably take notes on. I don’t use my e reader devices for anything other than reading. I don’t think you fumbled at all - I much prefer the size of my 6” e readers.
Can you tell us what you think about the reMarkable 2
yo james have u ever gotten to work the network tethering on your kyocera phoen?
Thank you for your interasting video from Japan.
I’m just wondering how you get ebooks?🤨
Does it have the features of other ereaders of how you can click on words and it gives you their definition and you can translate them and such?
god damn another james valdez scholz banger
how do you get the home screen with all the stuff in this segment? 4:33
What do you use for streaking James?
Can we read PDFs on these books? Like PDFs stored in iCloud ? And will it sync if I annotate or highlight the PDFs if opened through these e-readers ?
I see Guts and Casca 👀…. thank you you for all the eBook content I’m all for it
kobo is my boy, i love reading sm i just don't use my phone anymore unless i wanna listen to a podcast
in your opinion what benefits does it have that you don't get with an iphone + kindle app?
Can you post the list of e readers u have and which u recommend?
Doing some modular math 😎🔥, damn im taking discrete math rn and im struggling bruh 😢
Do you find the Display big enough to read Manga with Tachiyomi? Or do you need to scroll/zoom alot to read certain pages?
it's doable, not ideal-when the panels span two pages it's sort of a lot of zooming but otherwise it works in a pinch
What website would you recommend is a good place to purchase a hisense ereader in the united states?
I ended up buying the Note X aswell. Have you been able to update the firmware on yours? I cannot somehow update it..
this is off topic but your skin looks absolutely amazing
