@@KittenRaee They are no more hazardous than many tools found in most shops. It's all about responsibility. Arc welders can give 2nd-3rd degree sunburn in seconds, but it's not an issue as long as personal safety precautions are taken, i.e. don't look at the light without the proper glasses. The laser is no different. Not having an enclosure included means being able to make one that fits your workspace instead of being constrained to what is provided.
Can you make a video about the enclosure? Seems like an fun build also for resin printers.
I was just thinking I like that enclosure better than the one I bought with my laser cutter :D
having not already made a video on it just feels like a waste of content. I Would have watched him build it.
The logical endpoint of this channel is printing an apartment block out of red PLA.

creality stuff is so restricted speed wise it probably wont hurt it that much
i have 15 kg spool on top of Ender 3 - no problems)
Thoughts:
-Laser safety talk was good!
-The laser leaves the gantry up front which seems annoying, park it at the back when the user is done (easy software fix).
-Looks like there is a lot of charring, maybe a settings issue, or ventilation? Can probably clean with surface sanding, but not the cleanest results.
-Also, I'd watch a video about making an enclosure like that. Looked very nice!
To eliminate surface char you really need both strong extraction and a powerful air assist blowing air on the lasing site, neither of which this machine comes with. Material choice also matters, and many plywoods use glues and resins more likely to char, laser-safe plywoods are less likely to char badly. It is important to only use laser-safe plywood when cutting, otherwise it might contain PVC based glues.
You can apply a sheet of paper on the top of the wood to avoid the charring
To get less charring I would recommend using a thin layer of masking tape over the workpiece. The residue will build up on the tape instead of the wood. Then the tape can be peeled off to leave sharper lines.
Do you need to adjust power to compensate for the tape at all?
Also, does color matter? Like, does dark blue masking tape require less power to burn than white masking tape?
I’ve been considering buying a laser for a while but I have lung cancer and I’ve been put off by the fumes.. I’m considering the Gwike Cloud setup since it has air filters included.
@@DanteYewToob I know it is an old post, but I have tried masking tape, and the heat from the laser leaves the glue from the tape on the wood, so I added air nozzle instead.. and there is no discoloring on the wood anymore, and it gives a cleaner cut, and also cools the cut, my first laser went on fire the first week cutting acrylic
What kind of surface is under the machine? when the laser beam cuts TROUGH the wood there is nothing to prevent it setting the table top on fire.

This was too obviously an ad. I also really don't like lasers that come without an enclosure, to the point that for once I wouldn't be disappointed to see them legislated. On that topic though, I'm far more interested in the enclosure; could we get a video on that?

lol, right!?! At least Ivan is pretty straight forward with the OBVIOUS need for an enclosure of some sort. Doesn't even act like he'd mess with it without making sure it was safe.
This gives me flashbacks of a normal sized roll tangling and hopping off one of those. Bent my build plate real good.

Also, I'd bet you good money that he built this purely for the creality sponsorship, to link the laser to their printers. He won't use it. Especially since he even showed his own, better design at the start.

if you consider how much work and money is needed to build a sufficient enclosure with extraction, the price of the "naked" CNC lasers isn't as inexpensive as intended. You can buy completely encapsulated CNC-Laser with fume extraction for the money. But I guess all producers of those naked lasers imply that their customers won't mind if they buy an insecure product.
Next... Ivan welds a spool holder for a modest wooden spool of 100 or 200kg of filament.. supported by bearings and an assistant motor! 😁🤔 Hum... Not a bad idea now that I think well about it! 😁
I bet that would make a really good cat sized hamster wheel scaled up. =)
due to the heat wouldn't you want to make a table for the printer so you could put the spool under the printer?

That works well! I over-engineered mine with a 4mm x 300mm shaft from a 2D printer and spherical bearings in a hub that goes in the centre of the spool.Shame we can't comment with photos on here :P

cnc laser from creality? :O how well does it handle plastics? i'd prefer to avoid getting a co2 cabinet laser if possible but i dont see that being a thing.

Si puedes comprar la Ender 3 s1 mejor. Es más cara, pero te vas a ahorrar muchos dolores de cabeza. Ya sólo por el sensor para nivelar la cama, merece la pena.
Ea un buen impresora para empezar. Hay que hacer unos modificaciones para que funcione al perfección pero lo bueno es que hay muchas piezas que se pueden imprimir para mejorar y muchas que se pueden comprar barato. Yo empecé con ello y ahora estoy con un flsun pero me enseño mucho el ender

Obs it needs an enclosure, air assist, and ventilation to the outside (because, safety) but is $580 a good price for this rig? I have no experience with purchasing diode laser rigs.

Why are you using a Creality printer even though you have built printers that hold those giant spools anyway? I get that it's sponsored, but your experience caliber is way more advanced than using a commercial printer. I'd much be interested if you built your own laser cutter and use that to build another innovative printer.
I'm curious, but why don't laser cutters use a stable laser and a rotating mirror instead of massive motors and movement?
Its called galvo systems which is hard to use on diodes because of the focus... Not telling about how the price would rise up...

For anyone that has a laser cutter AND a 3D printer - When do you use your laser cutter?
Certain projects look better in wood with an engraver, so that makes an easy choice.
But also it's a lot faster to cut a large shape out of 3mm wood than to print a large 3mm-thick shape with plastic.
If I were designing this project, I probably would have used wood for the sides and bottom like this, but designed the bearing-holders with plastic, and maybe even connected the wood to each other with plastic, and small bolts instead of the large through-bolts he used here.
It depends on the application, but I often design with laser cutting in mind to shorten prototyping time for larger parts.
Never because the smell really bad and you get very much mixed results on a lot of stuff. Like you can't just go to the hardware store and buy a sheet of wood that you can cut without issues. Now I used my to cut thin cardboard for packaging and that worked pretty fine, although I had to clean them all because it smelled very bad.
I have a 10watt diode laser machine (not Creality, but it is not that different) but for for cutting any wood over 1mm I use a scrollsaw. Cleaner, quicker, safer. Cutting this spool holder would take two minutes with a 100€ scrollsaw, and using a much stronger plywood. No fumes, no fire danger. By the way, there is no indication of what kind of surface is under the machine: when the laser beam cuts TROUGH there is nothing to prevent it setting the table top on fire.
@@AlbertoNencioni I noticed that it looked like wood down there. The metal honeycomb will help get the laser out of focus and it'll burn less, but I do like that my current enclosure has metal down there to protect the surface it sits on.
Please guys stop putting spools on top of your 3d printer, this will cause a lot of low resonances. You could make a little shelf on top which is decoupled from the rest of your printer, on the wall as an example or a ikea lack over your printer.
I wish FormFutura would package our 4.5kg reels better so they weren't all smashed up on arrival making spool holders like this useless.
Putting the spool up that high on the printer is going to cause all kinds of ghosting and all. Highly recommend either mounting the spool lower on the machine or sticking with an off-machine spool holder
Any concerns with that large a mass of fil up so high. Unless the FDM was bolted down I would be concerned of a tip over.
You might want to consider anchoring the holder to the printer. If the filament has a tangle... it would be unfortunate.

The 'rules' also say you must never leave your 3d printer unattended whilst it is working because it can burst into flames, burn your house down and erase your VCR tapes. And, of course, we all follow that advice don't we? So thanks for the laser health and safety advice. Now can we get back to living in the real world?
In the real world, laser cutters blind people who don't have *and properly use* goggles or enclosures; and even with fume extraction, anything with chlorine (like PVC, obviously) will corrode your stuff (and your body outside and in) on contact if the residue is not made inert, and a number of materials can even be dangerous or illegal to vent to the outside without extra precautions to reduce health and pollution issues.
And the people who don't care about these things often learn about them the hard way.
