Lol Tolhurst & Pearl Thompson discuss The Cure at the Egyptian Theater

- This is a Q& A from April 21st, 2017, after the showing of The Cure in Orange at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. Lol sweetly chews on bubble gum as he gingerly answers questions, and Pearl's eyes gleam with mischief, throwing in one liners.
It's wonderful to have met Lol Tolhurst and to see he's retained his innocence after the many dark years. And of course it's wonderful to have seen Pearl Thompson, dazzling. At the end of the Q&A, the interviewer pleads with the audience "don't bum rush us," as 3/4 of 500 attendees stood up to get in line to meet Lol and Pearl, and get Cured signed.
Before the show started, Lol introduced The Cure in Orange, pronouncing it OH-RAWnge as it's pronounced in french. He also took a video of the audience saying "Happy Birthday, Robert" and sent it to Robert Smith. We all waited patiently to see if Robert replied, but by the end of the night he had not.
Smith, Tolhurst, Gallup, Williams, O’Donnell and Thompson was the best lineup they ever had

Met Lol at Kiss me show in Oakland, what a bloody nice fella. I know he was fighting some demons and you could tell it was a bit of a struggle for him but he tried so hard and wanted so much to be nice to us. So glad to see he conquered all that and is enjoying life.
I love the way Lol refers to the Cure as "we". How brilliant it would be if he and Porl/Pearl rejoined. No disrespect to the talent and ability of the current line-up. It's the pure nostalgia of them being there.

I believe Lol is a tremendous influence in shaping some of the best Cure songs in their early days.

I got to see the Cure in 1986, and a year later saw In Orange in the theater. So lucky to be born at the right time.

Omg this was yesterday! I went to Barnes to buy Tolhurst's book in Santa Monica... spent the whole day reading it, quite fun.
It always amazed me how Lol Tolhurst could play keyboards with one finger. An incredible talent.
The Cure played Set The Controls For The Heart of the Sun at the soundcheck for Cure in Orange? Now that is awesome. Would love to hear that.

I was a teen watching The Cure in Orange over and over, trying to play like them. I still watch it on CZcams in 3 parts. I asked for this video as a birthday gift but found out it's not available in dvd.Great to see the two original members (I think Porl was in the band way before but then left?).

All that matters is that he was there. And he sparkled like a gem.
He gets really nervous in interview situations so he was probably there for visual interest and moral support :)

Pearl and Borris told smith they were no longer in the band unless he got rid of Lol. They were pretty much fed up with his drunken obnoxious behavior, I don’t think there’s no lost love between the two
Must be crap when you' leave or are sacked from a band and forever after all you have is that history and you will be forever known as that person who was once in that band.
You know what's even worse? Never having had that experience to begin with. Just being...ordinary.

Pearl is just weird. He doesn’t seem to have any interest in saying anything and he seems oblivious about how to use a microphone, even after he’s told that people can’t hear him.
Awww, I think he was just shy. I've heard it's not easy for him to do these talks in front of people, so I'm just glad he was there at all. Such a sweet night to see Lol and Pearl together. They had the audience giddy.

@@escaton74 I think when he dresses that way it makes him more shy than if he was dressed more conventionally. At this point (the night of the interview) he seemed to be awkward about dressing this way, so perhaps that made him shy. Kind of like when you want to wear something that people might criticize, so you feel vulnerable.

He didn't say. He's "dressed up" throughout his career as a man, so there's a good chance he still identifies as a man.
The curator of Mr Musichead (presumably knows Pearl personally) used "he". I don't think he dresses like a man, a woman, or anyone else I've met. My instinct that the persona of Pearl is similar to the animist paintings, something not wanting to be classified...?
I would have been unsure of this myself before I watched this video (awesome btw. thanks Tanya. ) but Lol refers to Pearl as "he" and "him" throughout so that's it I guess.
I agree. There's nothing wrong with classifying as long as the individual gets the say in it. Otherwise its just bloody pretentious.
