I am a resident of Accra, Ghana, and I have personally witnessed the damaging effects of false accusations. A person close to me was publicly shamed and embarrassed without any proper investigation into the allegations against them. This kind of behavior is not only harmful to individuals but also detrimental to our society as a whole.
In Ghana, defamation is considered a criminal offense under section 208 of our Criminal Code. Yet, despite this legal provision, many people are still subjected to public humiliation based on unverified claims. This practice undermines the principle of "innocent until proven guilty," which is fundamental in any justice system.
According to a survey conducted by Afrobarometer in 2019, about 48% of Ghanaians believe that their rights are not well-protected by the country's judicial system. This lack of confidence can be attributed in part to instances where individuals are defamed without due process.
