    Hallo Johan. We all appreciated your videos. Please explain why you dont also use a single door thermostat on this Defy side by side freezer ? On all your other videos i see you install a adjustable thermostats on other kinds of freezers, but not on this Defy. Please be so kind to explain why not ? Otherwise the compressor runs permanent without switching off. Thank you very much appreciated

    • @JDNelRefrigeration
      @JDNelRefrigeration  Před 4 měsíci

      The compressor will not run continuously, it switches off during defrost. The reason why I dont put a thermostat in there is because when this freezer operated with the electronic temperature controller, and was turned to maximum you could achieve a temperature of -21. By putting it on a minimum setting you get a temperature of -17 and at -17 temperature, the compressor would only cycle if the ambient temperature drops to approximatly 15 degrees Celcius. The difference between -17 & -21 is so little that to have the compressor switch off for 30 minutes during a 24 hour period does not warrent a thermostat.

    Hi JD. Great video.. Is there a reason that the original defrost termination switch won't work. Do you have to change that. I have followed your video and made all the changes 'except the termination switch. The freezer works great and the only issue is the defrosting. I have not connected the purple defrost wire to the timmer as I was concerned it might melt the plastics as I had not changed the termination switch will it work. Lastly what is the cost of the termination switch

    • @JDNelRefrigeration
      @JDNelRefrigeration  Před 2 lety

      Yes it is very important to have a defrost termination switch. If your timer goes on defrost & there is no ice present the 25 minute defrost period with that powerful heating element will cause damage.
      R171.00 is the cost in SA

    I notice that this fridge has only five wires on the board, mine has 6 which is red, that goes to the door switch. If I follow your method, cutting the Black, purple and grey only affects the compressor, defrost element and fan motor, which is taken care of by the defrost timer. Won't your method affect the red wire, that is going to the door switch? Just curious about how to fix my refrigerator before I buy a new one.

    I have the single door freezer from this model family. It freezes as it should, but the compressor ran constantly, causing the electricity bill go go up quite a bit. Local repair tech told me it's the pc board. Would the workaround in the video be a viable solution to my problem? It feels like a compressor shouldn't be running that frequently?

    • @JDNelRefrigeration
      @JDNelRefrigeration  Před 2 lety

      If your freezer was running continuously it would skip the defrost period which happens twice a day, and it would build up a huge block of ice on the evaporator. If there is no block of ice on your evaporator at the moment, it means it does switch off during the defrost period. Your freezer uses about 200 watts of electricity unlike a hot water geyser that is 3000 watts.

      @@JDNelRefrigeration Wow, thank you so much for replying. I have implemented this solution and so far so good, everything is working exactly as described in the video. • @JDNelRefrigeration
      @JDNelRefrigeration  Před 2 lety +1

      When your compressor switches off the fridge, it has to stay off long enough for all the ice to melt off. The design of your digital temperature controller is such, that it tries to maintain a constant temperature therefore not allowing enough time for the ice to melt. If you cannot calibrate your controller for a longer off period then you will have to get the correct thermostat.

      @@JDNelRefrigeration Thank you so much! There is a bevy of "Make your Freezer into a refrigerator" youtubes and all sorts of gadgets, as well as advisors ranging from Phd's to outback hacks but among them your presentations and solutions stand out like Mt Everest. Yes, the defrost cycle on a digital freezer and the operation of a variable speed compressor are certainly challenges to a successful and non harming conversion. Coolers have 2 sides. they cool in one place and heat in another ('heat' extraction) even speakers are 'heaters'! The 'convertible' refrigerator on the market is a single cooling unit. By pressing a button inside and holding it for 3 sec, it can switch from freezer to refrigerator and back. The mystery is "How does it accomplish that?" I had a box from the '50s that would be a beer cooler or a half a cow freezer simply by adjusting the thermostat from warmer to colder. I don't understand why today's boxes seem designed to prevent that!!! Again, Thank you.
