Fine girl you are Adieu to you my Dinah, a thousand times adieu We're going away from the holy ground and the girls that we love true We will sail the South sea over and then return for sure To see again the girls we love and the holy ground once more Fine girl you are the girl I do adore And still I live in hopes to see The holy ground once more, fine girl you are See the storm a-rising, I see it coming soon And the sky, it is so cloudy you can scarcely see the moon And the good old ship, she was tossing about, the riggin' was all tore And still I live with hopes to see the holy ground once more Fine girl you are, you're the girl I do adore And still I live in hopes to see The holy ground once more, fine girl you are And now the storm it is over and we are safe on shore We will drink a toast to the holy ground and the girls that we adore We will drink strong ale and porter and make the rafters roar And when our money is all spent we'll go to sea for more Fine girl you are the girl I do adore And still I live in hopes to see The holy ground once more, fine girl you are Now u can listen and try and sing along. Xx
Fare thee well, my lovely Dinah, a thousand times adieu We’re goin’ away from the Holy Ground and the girls we all love true We will sail the salt seas over and we’ll return for shore To see again the girls we love and the Holy Ground once more Fine girl you are! You’re the girl I do adore And still I live in hopes to see the Holy Ground once more Fine girl you are! And now the storm is raging and we are far from shore; And the good old ship is tossin’ about and the rigging is all tore And the secrets of my mind, my love, you’re the girl I do adore And still I live in hopes to see the Holy Ground once more Fine girl you are! You’re the girl I do adore And still I live in hopes to see the Holy Ground once more Fine girl you are! And now the storm is over and we are safe and well We will go into a public house and we’ll sit and drink like hell! We will drink strong ale and porter and we’ll make the rafters roar And when our money is all spent, we’ll go to sea once more Fine girl you are! You’re the girl I do adore And still I live in hopes to see the Holy Ground once more Fine girl you are!
This song made me a fan of theirs thanks to this song my favorite song from The Clancy Brothers And Tommy Makem and I didn't knew while watching this until this point that Finbarr Clancy was related to The Clancys that is so cool I was manly into the oldies and I saw this concert on PBS and loved it.
I had this song running through my head all day today! I burst out in random spats of laughter so often, I think my co-workers are planning to have me committed...
my theory on why Irish music took hold in America during the 60s is that many songs were about rebellion and it spoke to the frustrated teenagers of that decade. they were being told to follow certain paths (the working man and the housewife) and conform to the point of being semi-faceless cogs. the songs of rebellion awakened their spirits and opened their eyes to the fact that they were being forced into societal molds that didn't fit who they really were (poet, artist, ect.). this led to the beginning of teenage rebellion in America which led to the hippie culture, women's lib, gay rights, civil rights, and the ideas that the govt. didn't have the best interests of the everyday people in mind; just the rich and powerful. the Kennedy assassination plus the introduction of Irish songs of rebellion sparked the flame that had been building for decades
Alot of Irish came to America during their potato famine in the 1840's so there were plenty of people already here who probably knew some of that music.
Congratulations I agree with you the two times I saw them I was amazed by them it was like watching The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem perform even though they're long dead the High Kings are our generation version of them.

@@helenclarke4735 I'm mostly talking about how it went from being the music of the poor to being the music of the counter culture movement
