  • The violent confrontation between China and the Philippines on June 17th near the Second Thomas Shoal marked a sharp escalation in tensions between the two countries over their rival territorial claims in the South China Sea.
    After the melee that severely injured one Filipino sailor, the two countries engaged in a second battle, this time in the media, to shape the narrative of what happened and where this burgeoning crisis goes from here.
    Alex Vuving, a professor at the Pentagon-backed think tank Asia-Pacific Security Studies Center in Honolulu, joins Eric to discuss why the events of June 17th have prompted Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. to recalibrate his strategy.

      Yes the Marcos administration knows this, that the US is engaged elsewhere : Ukraine, Israel & Red Sea, the coming US election, Taiwan . The Philippines ranks below all of these US priorities & so there was never any consideration to activate the Mutual Defense Treaty. There is a qualitative difference in how China views its maritime dispute vis a vis Vietnam & the Philippines. Vietnam is a still a Communist country and more importantly, it does not geographically impede China's ambition to project power outside of the SCS. The Philippines is the US oldest ally in the region and is a component of the First Island Chain. China has singled out the Philippines as the weakest link in the US defensive belt that seeks to contain Chinese sea power from the Pacific Ocean. Whatever China can learn from its grey zone tactics in the second Thomas shoal it hopes to use against the other links in the FIC (i.e. Taiwan & Japan)

    Let us be honest . The Phillipines ship was deliberated scuttled in order to stay in the reef. For over 2 decades, the Phillipines have stalled to remove the boat as promised and this standoff is a going on in the belief that the US will consider this conflict with China as adequate to confront the Chinese.

    The US has already escalated the situation by adding more bases on PH territory. Secondly, the US has for years declared a "pivot to Asia strategy" that suggest imperial intentions. By suggesting that the US send a fleet to intervene is dangerous, and will not facilitate discussion.
    The US already caused a war by manipulating Ukraine, and Russia made the mistake of allowing them to do it, which resulted in war.
    Assuming that China gives leniency to PH in this issue, what is to stop the US in once again manipulating political conditions to start another war in the Pacific?

    India's land claims are baseless according to history. Britain colonized that land from China. India inherited those stolen lands. The lands were part of the Qin dynasty for more than 500 years. If India got their lands back from British colonial power then China should get its lands back too. India believes their ancient gods reside in the Mount Kailash. China gave a far better land trade deal during Nehru but the Indian establishment and bureaucratic apparatus rejected those deals and 1962 happened. China wiped out the entire Indian front and then withdrew.

    This is how this dispute began: Ren'ai Reef (Thomas Shoal) has been part of China's territory for thousands of years. On 5/8/99 when NATO bombed China's Embassy in Yugoslavia, Philippines decided to send an old WW2 tank land ship and parked it there on 5/9/99 (convenient?). When China asked Philippines to remove it, Philippines promised that it'll be removed. Yet, 25 years have gone by, instead of removing the ship Philippines claims Ren'ai Reef is part of Philippines. There are previous videos of Filipino's boats running into Chinese coast guard's boat, and of armed men pointing gun at Chinese coast guards on the Sierra Madre. So, to just point out Chinese coast guards holding weapons would not give a clear picture of the situation.

    • @user-pr1ll1zy4n
      @user-pr1ll1zy4n Před 4 dny

      Probably the US instructed Philippines to run the rusty ship onto the island to start this dispute with China to make an excuse for US being brought into war that US has been salivating over! They had already tried to provoke China to militarily retaliate over bombing of Chinese embassy.

    The South China Sea Codes of Conduct have been discussed by ASEAN countries (PH included) and China for decades and almost concluded till Philippines raised recent events. That may be reason no other ASEAN countries speak up for Philippines so far. As much as the West wishes to drag China into a conflict, the timing for Mr Marcos is just not right now that there already two wars in the world. Remarks from well known political scientist Professor Mearsheimer and Mr Ritter aside, Asian countries including Taiwan are just not craving to be the next Ukraine.
