    SailGP has one of the BEST racing (not just sailing; any racing) on the planet but has high school level coverage. They'd rather show sailors getting wet and going fast with close-ups, which are cool, but this is a race, not a boat show advertisement! Every time they switch away from a shot of two boats back in the pack, or even at the front, on a close cross, to a close up it's incredibly frustrating. Japan went from last to 2nd in one leg...how? Who knows, they completely ignored it. I'm wondering if some of the commentators have ever even taken part in a regatta! They are constantly saying things that make no sense. Metric vs knots...I'm so tired of converting these on the fly. Then to have the final day run worse than most small club regattas I've seen, followed by a $1 million dollar season championship with no overhead coverage, in a race with no wind, was horrible! Should have postponed it a day. Lastly, that graphical wall surrounding the course blocks the view of not only the shoreline and spectator boats, but when Japan broke the boundary in the prestart they disappeared! It's like watching sailing in a hockey rink. Just put the sponsor on the water. I get so excited about these races and am always left with the feeling of disappointment. If they spent have the resources they did on videos about everything BUT the racing that they do on the racing it would be world class! They seriously need to fix the coverage, or they are going to lose the folks that are sailing fans.

      @@yonbon14 not really necessary. they had all these wizz-bang tools all season but they used none of them in the final race. What absolute losers was the broadcaster, when they missed vision of Japan being blocked out by a camera boat - that was doing nothing useful anyway.

      It is like making an hour long competition of a Drag Race. Tactics and team work are secondary to the boats raw power. Seen one race, marveled at the boats; seen them all.

    Re: the collision at 14:10. Great Britain starboard tacks the other two and has right of way. The reaming boats (France and NZ) collide and the announcers say it's France's fault even though they are the leeward boat between the two. What rule am I missing where the windward boat on port tack (NZ) has the right of way?

    • @samthompson2057
      @samthompson2057 Před 2 lety +1

      The French were windward of New Zealand

    • @seandelaney1700
      @seandelaney1700 Před rokem +1

      I'm not sure who the announcer is but if these guys are using the same rules that have been built over several hundred years then he got it all wrong by my view. NZ was bearing down as if could cross starboard GB, France rightly is aiming to pass stern of GB, NZ which needs to give room to both boats fails to do so and collides. These rules make sense, even if this was not the rules, why would you cause a collision? Which is another rule NZ broke, whoever is right you must avoid crashing.

  • @sanfranciscobay
    @sanfranciscobay Před 2 lety +3

  • @kkeelty64
    @kkeelty64 Před 2 lety +6

    So at around 14:00 GB has right of way (on starboard tack) over NZ, and FR has to give room to NZ to get out of the way? I wish they had done a better job of explaining how FR was at fault and what they should have done instead. Seemed that they steered more to port (seemingly to duck behind GB) and interfered with NZ, but if they had steered to starboard they would have interfered with GB??? Also, did FR even get a penalty for that?

    • @ste-tuf
      @ste-tuf Před 2 lety +7

      Also FR was leeward and engaged to NZ. Thus FR should have right to luff NZ. In regular regatta it would be NZ to keep clear of FR and GB and to let some room for FR to pass behind GB. Maybe the rules are a little bit different in sail GP.
      But yes it's seem that fr doesn't have anywhere to go here.

    • @ianreidel1800
      @ianreidel1800 Před 2 lety +9

      Correct, NZ was at fault, France was going behind GB to get the the other mark and NZ thought they were going to gybe. I think NZ got a 4 point penalty for this..

    The crews need more protection. It's only a matter of time before we see a horror story unfold before our eyes. Some sort of cockpit rail bar with similar light weight construction to the hallo on F1 cars might work? Let's keep future racing close and exciting before an avoidable accident kills the sport. Race designers are reactive, they wait until there's been enough deaths to do something about it, look at Formula Ones Halo For example which has now saved many lives... It's clear that some one is going to get killed on these boats when they crash into each other... what are designers waiting for? Do they think it will be good publicity to see one of our favorite racers cut in half... and then market the new revised model as safer bringing much attention to the sport at the expense of a life or two. Disgusting if you ask me
