Inappropriate...McCartney talked about his own emotions and feelings and made this induction about HIMSELF rather than Wilson's musical genius, ear for harmony, melody, rhythm, etc.
McCartney should be embarrassed, but he's too self-absorbed to recognize it. That would take INSIGHT and he seems to lack it.
...and yes, I am a Beatles fan and was raised from birth on their music (actually while still in the womb).

Listen to the entire "Songs in the Key of Life" album before responding. If Macca had written anything worth listening to since "Wings at the Speed of Sound", I might take you seriously. I would also add that you missed mentioning a bunch of other bona fide Grade A geniuses in your list. No songwriter has ever dominated a decade the way Prince did the 80s. Incidentally, he's the greatest musician pop-rock ever produced. Bowie has the distinction of having his last album, - "Black Star" - written and recorded while he was dying, be one of his finest works. And if we're going to mention Jeff - one great, transcendent album - Buckley, then let's mention the undeniably better Hendrix and his three or four monumental albums. . And Bob Marley's songs continue to be played on pop radio in a way no other older songs do. They make you dance and feel and think. Bob was not merely "pretty good". And let's not forget Mick and Keith. Keith wrote most of "Angie". Mick wrote all of "Brown Sugar". These guys were pop/rock writing geniuses, and as much as I respect and enjoy "Pet Sounds" - which is about as much as I don't enjoy "Vegetables" - I'll listen to the Stones stuff 100x more. And I'm obviously not alone. And then there's U2 and Led Zep. U2's best and most popular original album - All That You Can't Leave Behind - came about two decades years after they started, a feat that's never been accomplished by any other rock-pop artist. Staggering when you think of it.

What a beautiful and fitting tribute from one melodic genius to another. BW's music definitely has that "something" that reaches deep down and touches your soul. And that's what brings the tears. It's a magical quality. Although the Beatles' music was revolutionary and sounds great, and had remarkable energy, creativity, harmony and melody, their songs don't really elicit tears from the kind of depth that Macca describes in this video. But Brian Wilson's songs do. Some of the music from Pet Sounds and Smile seems almost hypnogogic in its creation. Stuff from another realm, as though Brian Wilson channeled it from a dream and mined it from wells of deep pain and sentimental introspection.

The Beatles (to their credit in their case) had more in their arsenal than that. But try You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, In My Life, We Can Work It Out, the verses of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, You Never Give Me Your Money, Tomorrow Never Knows, A Day in the Life, Blue Jay Way, Dear Prudence, Something, Here Comes The Sun, Free as a Bird, Real Love, Across the Universe. Many of McCartney's anthems aren't genuinely too sad though, Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude, Let it Be, The Long and Winding Road being too consciously so, although She's Leaving Home and the piano line of Martha my Dear are moving to me. With The Beatles , you can weep at their range / ethereal experimentation, their numerous talents, their account of a Britain that doesn't exist in many places. The music hall / vaudevillian / the exciting / the tender and rawly passionate..
