'Actors are soft targets. Why can't we have opinions?': Priyanka Chopra

  • After Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said that the controversy arising out of his comments on the intolerance debate, made in an interview to NDTV, had at least partially hit collections of his new film 'Dilwale', his colleague Priyanka Chopra has said that actors were soft targets who were attacked right before the release of their films. Speaking on NDTV's Town Hall, Ms Chopra, whose 'Bajirao Mastani' also released to success and critical acclaim last week, said that she felt she had to speak up in support of all artistes and actors in general. She said that films are sometimes held to ransom and actors are made to pay the price simply for having an opinion.

Obviously, coz no one wants to see a,woman strong , they fake it, tht 'o I'm modern n I support women 'but in reality they want her "independent" but one step lower, rare, ppl understand the true meaning of feminism, in our country IV noticed tht some ppl nowdays think tht if ur not, applying makeup n ur not stylish then ur true feminist n otherwise ur a bimbo, that's not true , intelligence has nothing to do vth style ,one can be both or either ,, n she spoke abt the "fake accent" thing, still ppl r still commenting on tht,,n, one more thing I don't get, what's the problem with nose job etc ,,if someone feels the need n can afford it, y not ,,,,v should not forget tht she's in show biz n looks matter, that there's lot more pressure on females(esp, actors) to be good looking according to certain norms,,, n y r v concerned about their natural beauty,I think v should be happy with, what v get to c on the screen, rest is none of our business, they r not family to us, they r professionals , v like their work then v go n watch their movies, otherwise not,,,that's it,,,

It's amazing to me how there are Indians who have always said Priyanka was fake and always tried to put on this fake accent. Now that she has done Quantico, these same hypocritical Indians are praising her. It amazes me. I'm not even Indian, but I've always admired Priyanka and her range. I actually love her speech and so called "accent".

+tiffjan True, I completely agree. She spent her schooling years in the US, so obviously her speech would be influenced by that kind of language or accent or whatever. It is easy for us to sit here and judge someone. I honestly don't understand why people make such a huge deal out of trivial things. We live in a more global world now than ever before, and we need to just grow up and accept everyone for the way they are.

I have never been able to watch an interview this long, but Priyanka's answers were so on point. I could not skip through the interview. She is so well spoken and inspiring. I truly believe she deserves all of the succes on her way to the top. It's so hard, unfortunately especially for women, in a country like India to voice their opinions about sexuality/gay rights/marriage/etc., but she does it anyways. Why? Not because she wants make make headlines, but because she fights for what she believes in. She wants women AND men around the world to fight for their rights, not with their fists, but by educating others who fail to treat certain minorities/communities/genders as equals. This is exactly what I stand for, which is probably why her words spoke to me.

Tiafulable1 not narrow minded. Its a fact. Notice the difference between brides in the north and the south. IN the north they cover their heads. Parda system was only in the north. That was the entry point of Islam and that is where they were more in number. So barring women from social affairs was their influence. Indian princess and queens had lot more freedom. They had to restricted because the invaders did not bring women with them, and they used to steal women and loot the jewellery...we should have the courage and the freedom to say it. and those who are muslims should not be offended. having said that, islam is a part of india and many of its aspects of great, many are not so much..

It's not because some cover their head or do something that everyone does it or have to do it ! I beg all narrow minded people like you to stop thinking like this ! Muslim women are exactly as any other woman of any other faith in this world ! We as muslim believe in 1 God, cannot eat pork and have alcohol, cannot lie, must respect our parents, and most of all we have to respect
evryobody and be a good person to everyone, and that's all !!!!! Besides this it's up to every woman to have her own choice to do whatever she wants ! If she doesnt want to go out of her house then there is nothing to do with Islam or whatever religion ! It can be her choice or maybe she belongs to a rude family Who doesnt let her out, but THERE IS NOTHING TO DO WITH ISLAM ! And trust me I have been studying this religion my whole entire life ! I hope one day the media would stop spreading lies about this religion, as I dont wish any other culture or religion will have to face that one day ! Maybe my words will affect you in some points, maybe not, I'm just hoping all this hatred will stop one day.

+A AA not doing things everyone does once in their youth is empowering? studying hard for over 12 years, avoiding boys until you're 25 and then marrying a stranger to become nothing but a housewife is empowering? being tied down by a man after getting married is empowering? funny how no one says anything when a male does any of those things? did you not even watch the video??? empowerment doesn't have one set definition, it varies from person to person. there's not only one way to empower someone. she literally said her character on the show is empowered due to the fact that she does what she wants, when she wants, and doesn't care what anyone has to say about it. she's not an underprivileged poor girl from some rural village, don't expect her to say the only kind of female empowerment is through going to school. she's never had to deal with that problem before in her life so she's talking about it through the mindset of someone that's more privileged, like her character on the show. that Gandhi quote is not even relevant here lol

The same India that believed a widow should not get married, should shave her head off and dedicate her life to God so yah Priyanka is right about women being submissive in India in the olden ages. I certainly don't understand the popularity of the show called GAME OF THRONES among the Indian audience..! Just because an Indian is doing a show which has "SOME" sexual and bold scenes, it doesn't have to be such a big deal..! I'm not sure how Bollywood actors get casted for their parts in movies (do they just decide you are a good fit for a character and cast you straight away?)
But in Hollywood, it doesn't matter if you're Leonardo DiCaprio or Meryl Streep. It doesn't matter if the director already has an actor in mind that they'd want to cast for their character. You audition regardless to see if you're a good fit for the character.
There have been many big actors that were passed over to up-and-coming actors to play lead roles in blockbuster movies. It's just the way it is sometimes and how it should be.

Yeah. Many great scripts have pathetic actors who ruin it. Some of these directors are responsible for the art not to evolve more because they have preferences. These days it is changing but sadly to this day and age nepotism is a big issue plaguing the art. People are also partially responsible as they worship big actor/actress or kids of famours artists. So it is beneficial to cast them than build art.

I was a bit at odd and intrigued the way she handled these inflammatory comments passed by barkha when she pointedly wanted to make a good gossip material out of it . Instead of beating around the bush she was vocal about the hollow nature of our film industry , ideology and society . Looking at her she would make a good orator too the way she handled the question not dodging but accurately answering them better than most agenda - laced politicians . She earned my respect .

This was a good interview. The thing about the pay disparity is, the bar is set so much lower for male stars, especially in India. They could get one blockbuster years ago and they're pay is now locked into place to be 300x more than what the actress makes and they're now the new "reigning superstar". He could get a few flops here and there but he'll still get paid a huge chunk of money compared to the actress that could have had multiple blockbusters in just the past few months/year because directors and producers think the investment is still worth it more for the male. And not just actresses, it's ridiculously how much money actors make PER film compared to how little the people like the technicians and makeup artists etc. make when they're a huge part of a film's success too. All these actors could still live comfortably if they make a 1/5th of what they make now and the rest is divided up between the behind the scenes group of people apart of the team.

    • @sams517
      @sams517 Před 8 lety +2

Ranbir Kapoor can still demand 9-10 crores for his next movie even after the travesty that was BV but once an actress gets a flop or two she's automatically tagged a bad luck charm. I never see any guys get that title? A lot of it also has to do with the fact that hero worship in India is on a much higher scale compared to heroine worship.

***** first of all, quit bringing everything around to feminism as if it's the worst thing to happen to men when the world's been catering to every need and cry of men for basically all of humanity. it has everything to do with a gender propaganda when men are getting paid anymore, i don't think you know what gender inequality means. and no, people like kangana who've literally carried films like queen and tanu weds manu to success at the box office still get paid way less than someone like srk for doing a shitty film like happy new year. and that girl's been gaining tons of popularity post queen, and even won another national award. the wage gap is not a myth when it's literally still happening today so i won't even bother with you since you're clearly dense enough to believe that bullshit. have fun trolling somewhere else.

+ Sara Enayath- Surprisingly, not a whole lot because she won the Miss World pageant at a really young age (17-18) and she started movies after her 1 year reign of Miss World but she has repeatedly mentioned it as a regret that she didn't pursue higher studies. It's nice to see though how intelligent, elegant and involved she is with women's issue such as female feticide, and right to education. She is a UNICEF ambassador.

I am writing a paper on who is a portrait of a leader for a class/ club. I had two women I wanted to write about Amber Lau from f(x) from Korea. She is an example to teenagers all over trying to find your voice. And Priyanka chopra I finally get to write why she a very influential person in my life. I am Mexican- american, and just women from other countries who have a voice in their country makes me so proud. Women of different skin colors breaking these stereotypes they are building bridges! This helped a lot main points on why she is a great influence to a lot of young women and everyone around the world.
