  • Hot rods and custom cars have been an American art form for nearly as long as automobiles have been made. We've been getting requests to feature these awesome rides so follow along as we select our favorite rods and customs. Did your favorite make the list? Which would you add? Do you remember all of these, and did they take you back to when you were reading the car magazines as a young car guy/gal? Tell us in the comments!

When i was a teen and young man i loved customs buy now that I am older ( much older ) I prefer stock looking cars. Customs always seem dated after a few years although the Cal. Kid still looks as good as it did on TV back n the 70s. Its my favorite on this list.
Car Crafts Project X was another favorite of mine ( of Hollywood Knights fame).

Oh ya! The Project X has an interesting history and we totally missed that one. Thanks and keep watching. We may do another one of these. If you love the stock cars, check out our other "Top" lists!

When I hear Hot Rod, it's always the image of The California Kid...in it's steel wheel movie version.

The Dobbertin Nova was heavily influenced by Scott Sullivan's '67'Nova SS , that I first saw at the '78 Street Machine Nationals when it was still held in Indianapolis . It to was a blue , blown big block pro street car . For other picks , try the Dave Dias '28 Ford roadster pick-up , and the Joaquin Arnette / Andy Granatelli / Bill Couch 'chopped , Sectioned and shortened '34 Ford three window coupe . Also the little seen Mox Miller , one owner customized '58 Impala . The late Pat Ganahl did a video on it , I believe back in the nineties .

Lucky guy, my dad thought taking me to a Custom Car show, was a once in a lifetime thing, along with taking me to a Drag Strip ( fortunately, I chose a Gasser/Altered exibition).

Iconic cars and I love them all. You show a few pictures of Norm Grabowski's T in the first segment but you don't mention him by name. Hard to believe the one shown at 3:11 is the same car as the ones shown at 2:27, 2:55 and 3:30! Customized later on by a different owner and this wild version was going to be Lilly's new car in The Munster's! The recently-restored-to-Norm's-version is (I think) the one shown in color at 3:30. Too bad you didn't have room for Tom McMullen's '32 Ford roadster. That was one that always did it for me.

Thanks for watching and the McMullen roadster is a great choice. We're making a list of ones to include in the next version so keep watching!

@@IfThisCarCouldTalk Love the video, but a couple of picky little things-Not sure about the pronunciation of some of the names but I think Buttera is pronounced with the accent or emphasis on the second syllable (ter). And the few times I've heard Hirohata pronounced in old interviews by old timers that I presume knew him and how to pronounce his name, it sounded more like 'here otta' or even blending the 'r' into the next syllable like 'here ROT ta.' Oh and Li'l John's T's style became known as a restro rod not a restro mod, those came later.

Remember back when if we needed "something special" it was design it, get the materials and brush up on your fabrication skills, have a go at making it, if it wasn't correct do it again

I actually saw the Grafiti coupe during the making of the movie in 72. It was a hastily built car ok but not great quality.

I have to agree about the Buick Invicta X-60, the attention to detail and craftsmanship really shows.

A Chevy II is not a hot rod. It's a muscle car!
