I recently learned that wheat bran is very high in oxalates, which are micro-abrasive crystals that some plants produce to kill the insects that eat them by cutting up their digestive tracts. It is the ingredient in Barkeepers Friend cleanser.
It takes time to kill them, but I wonder if the worms/ beetles would be healthier and live longer if other media was used? I am using a mix of wheat bran with some oatmeal that I grind finer than the rolled oats. Carrots, spinach and potatoes are also high in oxalates.
(I have been studying foods high in oxalates as it was the cause of my fibromyalgia and bladder pain, and mineral deficiencies.)

Would you want to make more videos about mealworms? Maybe how you separate pupae from the mealworms. And just everything else. There are not a lot of people who are making videos about mealworms regularly. And yeah. Im going to start my own farm next month. But i want to know more.

the first thing is start with what ever you like, but if you're raising meal worms to feed your pets then i suggest you start with 500 meal worms ..the larva will pupate at different temperature ..to separate them all you need to do is hand picked them when they pupate and place them in a container near a warm place..the warm place will make them pupate faster...
when the larva pupate into a pupa you can tell if he's gonna turn into a darkling beetle by the redness of his back head...the redder the sooner he'll turn, they usually turn in around 8-11 days after pupate into a pupa...
if you could buy meat maker for chicken i would recommend that cause i been raising meal worms for 8 yrs and they live longer on a higher protein diet, instead of on oatmeals and wheat bran..get meat maker#4 or 5 is best, but this is my opinion only from what i used and worked best for me.. the worms also live longer than the one eating oatmeals and wheat brans.
you should always make a new bin with whatever substrate you wanted to use in every 15 day and just put the bin you had them beetles making out in a warm place and it will hatch within a week ... the only water source i really used is potato, any veggie , apples, will do, but i never use avocado , but that doesn't mean you can't......2 things you need to watch out for is, 1 tiny little red ants...these boogers will kill all you larva if you're not careful if you have ants around your home...if you do, like i do then i would just spray ant spray on a cloth and wipe it around the outside walls and around the bin like a moat to protect a castle ...2nd is mold...to prevent this from happening, i would recommend you put a little tray or cap under your water sources such as, veggie, potato, carrots etc...oh, i also used a wet hand towel and soak it in water and put into a lttle tray for the larva as water source..you don't need to put lids on them cause they can't climb or fly even when they're a beetle...i hope this helps you and i apologized for my poor grammar .

if you want to keep the ants out, try a mixture of baby powder and alcohol. That creates a barrier the ants can't cross.

I want to breed mealworms to sell to people. But i want to sell the best as possible out there. I mean, it all depends on what the mealworms had to eat in their lives. If its just carrots, then i guess it doesnt have all the nutrients it could have. My mom said that avocado is a great source of nutrients and if i give mealworms that, they will be better quality too. Isnt that right? I hope im making sense. I dont really know how to explain it. But yeah. What are the best foods you can give your mealworms?

    • @NWRedworms

They are a desert animal and do not need much wet material. They would likely get a mite problem if they were in wet material.

Carrots aren't made for the nutrition it's made for the water inside and that's what keeps the mealwoms hydrated, you can also have a few deed bugs in their darkling beetled love to eat them, and just some oatmeal or some grain is basically what they eat you can use it as food and bedding, I have.my qown mealwoms and be sure you know what to do with the cuz the breed like crazy!

Is avocado a good food for mealworms? Not alone, but next to pepper bells and cucumber

    • @pitajalla
      @pitajalla Před 6 lety +1

Avocados are pretty expensive to feed to mealworms.
I'm in my second year of raising them and I thought this video was an eye-opener.
I built two "breeding facilities" from containers like his.
He painted them black because they like the dark.
I cut out the bottom of one and put in aluminum screen. I hotglued the duct tape I taped the screen onto the sides. This was super important because the beetles tried to get under the tape and got stuck. Had to euthanize them.
I put the beetle box over a plain box with supports to hold up the beetle box.
I use carrots for moisture and food. I've tried kale and they liked it. They didn't like beet greens.
      They LOVE apple slices.
I give both the beetles and the larva wheat bran and quick oats. The beetles get their bran in peanut butter jar lids. Periodically I change them out and put what's left in with the larvae because they lay eggs in it and there are often larvae.
I put plastic jar lids, like from a coffee tin in the corners of the larvae box because they clump together in the corners and like to hide.
When they're mature, they will begin to pupate.
I have dollar store shot glasses I use to collect them (one pupa per "glass") and then set them in old slide boxes.
Since I want to use the larvae to eat myself, when I see they're pupating, I know it's time to harvest the biggest worms and induce mortality in the freezer. I now have almost 2 cups. Soon I'll be cooking them up.
I only use organic foodstuffs to feed.
I should make a video of my set up.
      LOL
