  • "Walk - Don't Run" was written and orginally recorded by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith in 1954.In 1957 Chet Atkins recorded a popular rendition of the song for his album Hi-Fi in Focus. He did so after discussing the matter with Johnny Smith, who was pleased with the arrangement. After hearing a Chet Atkins recording of "Walk - Don't Run", the Tacoma, Washington based instrumental rock and roll band The Ventures released their version of the tune as a single in the spring 1960 on Dolton Records (based in Seattle, originally known as Dolphin Records). This version made the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number 2 and kept out of the number 1 spot by "It's Now Or Newer" by Elvis Presley."Walk - Don't Run" made also the US Hot R&B chart No. 13 and the instrumental reached No. 3 on Cash Box magazine chart for five weeks in August and September in 1960.The Dolton release had two backing sides, the first release (Dolton 25) had "Home", and after initial sales were so great, the B-side was replaced with Bob Bogle and Don Wilson original composition, "The McCoy" Dolton 25-X.This single is the later Dolton 25-X pressing.

I was 10 years old in 1960 and fell i love with this song. Loved it then and still do. I bought the 45 rpm record in 1960 on the Dolton label, and I still have it at 74. The original drummer for the Ventures went on to become a 4 star general in the US Air Force.
