Knife Making - Japanese Tanto Style unokubi Knife / 包丁作り-たんとうのうのこび包丁

- This tanto knife is a slightly modified version of unokubi. The whole build is hand made except drilling the hole. Definitely not nice like what Japanese makes but a little bit similar to that. Japanese blade smiting is definitely one of the difficult tasks I have ever done. You need a lot of patience in your work. The blade material is EN31High carbon content tool Steel. I want to do the Hamon line but get only a small fraction at the bottom and little bit over the fuller area which I really didn't like. I want that wavy pattern of Hamon but this is my learning journey and very pleased with the outcome. I personally think that I did better than my last wakizashi build, rest I leave up to you because you are the judge. The saya is made with African wenge wood, extremely hard and dense wood and with lack of tools I definitely felt a lot of problems but with the final tight fit, I get that is much satisfying for me. The tsuba guard plan is to do an inlay work but I am very bad in engraving and unable to achieve that result and abandoned that plan. The brass guard is little heavy so to remove a little bit of weight I made some barley plants and leaves and that looks good to me.
Definitely suggest the knife you wanted to see in the next build and I am going to make a giveaway of that knife.

Dude that is some of the best bench work I have ever seen.
Thanks Mr. John, appreciate your words:)
Don’t see a lot of bench work do you
I have seen a lot of bench work, and I agree with Mr. Hauserman. The tool he had to work with were minimal, and his skill is very impressive.
Köszönöm, hogy láthattam, ahogy a csoda lètrejön! Az alkotás öröme a leggszebb!
köszönöm testvérem, az ilyen szavak mindig növelik az erkölcsöt :)
Your patience itself is far more way impressive than the beautiful knife
Thanks brother for the words:)
You have earned much praise for your work; this video is one of the best on you tube.......Bill
Thanks Bill....I think it's people like you who boost the morale to do better. Thanks for the support 🙏
Dude you’ve just inspired me to start my very own project and after seeing this video makes me believe that you don’t actually need to have fancy machinery to make a beautiful masterpiece... thank you for sharing your work of art with us... RESPECT!!!!
Thank you brother for the words, yeah you are righ, the only thing you need is a strong will power and you are good to go. Good luck for your build:)
all you need to be a bladesmith is a file, some clamps, a place to light a fire, and a whole lot of patience. tools are just helpful. they make the job quicker and easier. but they are not necessary
The word " Craftsman " doesn't do You justice ! You're an Artisan !!!!
You have " living proof " that You
don't need a bunch of power tools
to create a work of art , like this that ANYONE would be proud of !!!!
Thank you brother, your words means a lot to me:)
That tanto is the most beautifull knife in the world. Well done.
thanks brother.
As a bladesmith who started from basic tools and hand files I take my hat off to you for your skill with a file, it takes forever to get it done that way so props to you. The dimensions of the blade are a bit off but non the less you made a fine tanto sir.
Thank you so much brother for the words, appreciate your feedback:)
I agree 100%! I’ve watched a lot of videos and what he does with a file and a coping saw is impressive.
Beautiful
Thanks Larry:)
Beautiful handcrafted workmanship! As a woodworker who uses hand tools I can appreciate to some degree the time, work and dedication to detail involved in such a project. Thank you for sharing your craft with us.
Thanks for the feedback sir:)
awesome tanto
Thanks mate:)
Man that is a work of art! One of the most beautiful knives I've seen.
Thanks Chris, appreciate your words:)
Do all the grinding by hand.
Man, you have balls (of steel!).
Amazing.
Hahahahaha................thanks man, but it really pains alot, for two days I faced the cramping issue in forearms.
Beautiful knife
Thanks brother:)
Simple tools fantastically used. fantastic job
Thank you brother:)
Wonderful to see a smith forging a beautiful blade without a hydraulic press or hydraulic hammer, just as I wish to do as a hobby, very soon. So happy I came across your channel friend and defiantly liking what I've seen and subscribing, with blades made like they were always made. If the Hamon doesn't show next time, design using nail polish and when dry, etch the blade in fluoric acid. Thank you from N.W Wales GBR👏👏
Truly made by hand and very beautiful, an inspiration to everyone that thinks you need expensive tools to make something stunning!!!!!
Thank you brother:)
Phenomenal hand work. Very impressive,

Thankyou sir, appreciate your words🙏
Great job!! Make a kukri from leaf spring steel! Love the design of those blades
Thanks for the recommendation John, looking forward to this .
pretty awesome to see you make this out of some pretty standard hand tools
Appreciate your words mate:)
loved watching your skills and seeing the final project . amazing🙏🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏👏
Thank you brother 🙏.
for the hamon, try putting the clay on higher and dragging thin lines of clay down, or put it on like you did and use a round tipped stick or something to push it back towards the spine, this should get the hamon to come out more. also, quench in water next time and it will be harder, making the hamon stand out more. beautiful work, very detailed and meticulous. keep it up :)
Thank you for the words, I am afraid of water quench that's why try to avoid it. I tried 3 times in the past in a hope of success but failed miserably. Definitely kept your points in mind while doing it again.
Nice job dude! At first I was a little skeptical of you... but now I love you!
Thanks for your valuable time mate :)
Incredible work!!! And a great result! 👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍
Thanks pal 🙏

Appreciate your words brother 🙏
bruh you hand filed so much... respect
🙏thanks for the words brother
It was awesome!!! I admire your talent. Thumbs up
Thanks for your generous words brother 🙏
Truly spectacular!
About your hamon; you should use a thinner slurry and build it up in layers beginning at the spine and working your way down the bevel but not entirely to the edge. The idea is to protect all BUT the edge and your's had a great deal of material on it's edge, thus, your hamon wasn't as dramatic as it could've been.
That being said; don't forget that most hamon don't "pop" until the final buffing of the edge.
Thanks brother, That's a great tip brother, I surely didn't knew that much about Hamon.
Dude awesome work man. Craftsmanship by is excellent. Great build!!!
Thanks brother:)
For the hamon, less clay is more. Try a very thin (1-2 mm) layer next time. Obviously you have to have the right kind of steel as well. great work!
Okay, that's a good info brother and I thought that's I need to lay a thick layer to get Hamon. Thanks for the tip mate:)
Awesome tanto knife I have ever seen on CZcams.
somebodies been watch Mr. ford great video brother keep up the great work
Thanks brother for the words, appreciate it.
👍👍👍
Salute to you... I like ur tanto especially your patience and hard work.... Keep it up for new video.... Pluse you need to practice making the habaki better....👍👍👍
Thanks brother:)
Excelent video, beautiful blade!!!! I want to see you making a pukko knife!!!
Thanks for the words brother, and thanks for the suggestion:)
i like the way u built it..so much hours by files..i really enjoy it..
even i dont like about the tsuba..
but still.. u really have skill sir.. your blade sir, it will keal... 😁
Deeply appreciated your words brother.
@@ambroscustom i am sorry for my bad english 🙏🙏🙏🙏
i really appreciate your hard work..its awesome..
even i, till now cant built as good as yours.. 🤦🤦🤦
Your English is absolutely fine brother, there is nothing you have to regret about. Just focus on the work and you can make much better knives than this one🙏🙏. Thanks for being here:)
👍
Next time you work with copper, heat it red hot and quench in water. That’s how you make it soft. It will be way easier to work. Beautiful work though.
Thanks man, surely use your tip next time.
One way of doing it I suppose ! Nothing like the skills of the Japanese KATANA KAJI in every respect .
Yeah man it's definitely not close, just trying to mimic the Japanese way.
Very nice. Fit and finish is excellent. May I share with you?
Take the forge scale off of the blade with a stone or a solution before you file. Your tools will stay sharper.
Forge your habaki before you make the hamon.
Heat the blade on the spine, letting the heat bleed up to the edge before you quench.
I wish you well.
Thanks for the awesome tip brother, I definitely pay attention when I forge katana next time
Good work 👌👍itnaaa sharp knife...😳too good....wohoo....merko b chaiye ek ....ending badi jabrjastt hai....
Thank you so much Sakshi.
@@ambroscustom 😊😊
Open my eyes, you are forging a knife. Close my eyes, you are forging an aircraft carrier
🤣🤣🤣
Great art🔪 by greatest artist
thanks dear
Nice blade.. on the video.. drop the music volume down a lot, I would prefer to hear the sound of you working.
Thanks man, I thought that music made the work more dramatic, attractive, and enjoyable that's why I use them :)
AMbros Custom I don’t mind the music so much.. it’s just very loud compared to the other sounds. You make such beautiful work without power tools, I don’t want to drown out the sound of your work :)
@@OuroborosArmory thanks mate 🙏 I do take care of that.
@@ambroscustom The music ruined you great work. Don't add any sound in videos, the natural sound is the best!
I recently made a few tantos out of files. They are about 11" maybe...but when i water quenched the first one. I was suprised by the curve i got. About 1/4 inch of curve from center....I was so excited it didnt crack AND I got a curve
I never got any luck with water. Did three times in the past and every time giant crack or big banana with crack and some time with file work done to it multiple cracks. Any recipe you have.
@@ambroscustom only thing i i might be doing differently than others is i quenched in only like an 1 and 1/2 inches of water meaning the bottom of the trough is 1 1/2 and i only did an edge quench, held the blade still and used a considerable amount of furnace cement on spine of the tanto for the hamon....both times resulted in success other than slight warpage left or right
Нужно сделать Шабер и долы легче пойдут,но ручная работа близка к древней,респект может в этом задумка?
this guy is no joke
If you use a water hardening [shallow hardening steel like the 10xx series or W-1, W-2] steel and quench in Water, you will get a nice hamon. Using tool steel, or something like 5160 or other deep hardening steels, you can only quench in oil or it will most likely crack as water is way too fast a quench for these steels. You could go for a straight "temper line" or "differential quench" by edge quenching similar to what you did here.
Thanks for the nice tip Mr. David. I tried in the past of full quench in the water and break the knife, so always afraid of doing that, but definitely going to try this shallow hardening technique.
Muy molesta la música hermano 🤷 x otro lado hermosa pieza, muy hermosa
You are a very hardworking person . You made least use of machine
Someone get this man a grinder!
What a beautiful blade! Love the blade design! Great video! Thanks for sharing your skills!
Thanks for the words brother.
Amazing work mate, hats off to you for putting the time in to do it right, well done.
Thanks for the kind words mate.
Excellent as always. How about a Khukuri if you haven't done one already. Original rat tail tang.
Thanks William, yeah I did that in the past, lets see what the majority says.
@@ambroscustom Ok. Didn't see it in your other knife builds. I'll look further in your website.
The Tanto always looks good as a shirasaya, with the Tsuba it looks awkward, remove the Tsuba and it will look really good, the tanto is a close in support weapon that is pretty nasty if on the recieving end, also most samurai ladies were armed with a Tanto for self protection of for saving her honor, now thats not to say some didnt have a Tsuba but they wre tiny in size..
Thanks mate, the tsuba design I made according to a tanto I found on wikipedia and there is this kind of tanto posted with a slightly big tsuba like this one.
@@ambroscustom Its still a great Tanto, i have a couple without the Tsuba, although if i do find a nice Tsuba i would put it on, you got great skill there..
Thanks mate I appreciate your words:)
Amazing work sir ... Here , take my subscription 👍
Thankyou mate:)
タントは日本の車の名前ですね笑
正確には短刀(タントウ)がただしいですね!
The only thing I can point at that I am not satisfied is that butterfly and that you didn't use smaller grain for grinding and polishing. The butterfly itself is great, shape wise but the way it is so uneven in depth grinds my gears. You can try to fill it up with soft metal like copper or something.
after edit: I meant, dragonfly and not butterfly. As english is not my native language I tend to make this mistakes.
Thanks for the feedback brother. I definitely pay much more attention to those fine details in my upcoming builds:). I didn't have those japanese polishing stones so have to stuck with the paper abrasive.
Майстер !
