  • The possibility of an Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War remake, year after year, becomes more and more palpable. What would Sigurd, Deirdre, Arvis, Seliph, Julius and Julia look like? How would the story play out? Would there be gameplay additions? This video lays out my thoughts on how to pull off a proper FE4 remake with some of some personal hopes I have for a hypothetical remake of the game.

I mentioned this in the comments of another video by another CZcamsr, but probably the best way to "modernize" the map is to carve it up into bite-sized chunks interspersed by multiple castles.
A given chapter could be, say, 3-5 battles long, though on a continuous map. Some of these would be without story relevance (just level-grinding opportunities) while others would contain big or little episodes that originally played out on the maps of FE4. You take a break between all these in the form of reaching a checkpoint Castle, which would be an expanded hubworld of at roughly Engage-tier breadth. In practice they're mostly alike, with the same services being available in all of them.
To make things interesting there could be some kind of hybrid system taking into account the fact that these breaks weren't present in the original game; for example you could choose not to enter the castle and keep the chapter battle going continuously, or set automated activities to perform in the castle so that you're back out and ready to resume fighting in like 5 seconds.
Maybe have some characters enter the castle but not others, or integrate the turnwheel mechanic so that you can go back to a battle you previously ended so long as it's on the same chapter (for example, if you missed something).
To flesh this out and explore how it might look, let's imagine that entering a castle and/or doing stuff there equates to a turn for the units involved, and that stuff's still happening outside the castle on Enemy Phase even if every one of your unit's safely inside. Enemies gathered near a castle are still there, and with the passage of turns they might either disperse in random directions or (especially if they can spawn) congregate in greater numbers to effectively besiege your castle. Suppose you have some limited number of turns to complete a chapter so this could potentially mean game over or force you to use the turnwheel. Sigurd/Seliph/OC avatar character has the power to warp everyone inside a castle if he enters, but otherwise they have to enter one at a time.

@@eugenesteinbeck9469 I really hope they don't do that. Fe4 is my favorite fe precisely because it doesn't do that. Rather than the game being a series of disconnected battles where some are relevant and others feel pointless, every battle in fe4 is heading towards one ultimate goal of the map. To me there's nothing worse they could do than remove the giant maps and long chapters. Fe4 feels so coherent because everything from story to interactions between characters happens on one giant map, instead of having this hub world that feels entirely disconnected from the battles. There are certainly ways to modernize the game but to me doing that would be dishonoring.

The Oosawa manga has a lot of flaws but man I still love it. There's that infamous scene where Lachesis, being depressed after what happened to Eldigan, cuts herself with the Earth Sword because that hurts her but immediately heals herself but Finn stops her and comforts her. It's kinda an edgy scene but I still really like it because it managed to use the gameplay mechanic of the hp draining earth sword into a dramatic moment. A few notes and thoughts:
The Jealousy System is in fact a bug and not a feature. I think someone on the Serene's Forest forums figured that out not long ago, but yeah it was not an intended design. Also, as others have pointed out, Seliph and Julia aren't pairable in any regard and their negative love growth is meant to reinforce that.
As for maps, yes they're all 64x64 tiles, but you really have to remember a ton of those maps don't make use of the full space. Ch1 has the massive lake in the center of the map as well as the entire upper left corner inaccessible. Ch2 has a massive mountain range along the the right side of the map and a dense forest in the upper center. Ch3 has the ocean dividing the top and bottom parts of the map. Ch4 has the mountain range dividing the two halves of the map as well as the large swath of ocean to the northwest, you get the idea. The maps are huge, but are only ever using 50% to 75% of their usable real estate at any given time.
Lastly, the use of FE5 material and Kaga's notes. For FE5 material, it'd have to be very carefully used as to not distract from the overarching narrative of FE4. Saias and Eyval I think are the strongest contenders for showing up in some capacity as new characters or just side NPCs, but they'd have to adjust other things you happen upon along the way (such as Patty and Febail reuniting with Eyval/Brigid). As for the Kaga notes, that ones iffy for me. Kaga never published those notes officially, so they are in effect, his "headcanons". I personally take them as canon myself, because they do really feel like they'd have been in the game had the game been able to get a Director's Cut treatment. But therein is the bugbear. None of the Kaga Game Remakes credit Kaga in any capacity, not even as "original scenario by". His name has been scrubbed, and to use his content, that is not officially under Nintendo's ownership, and not credit him, would be really..... ethically yucky, to me. I want that stuff in a game. But I don't want Kaga' s ideas stolen without his due credit either. I suppose the most unlikely dream scenario is Nintendo and Kaga kiss and make up and bring him back for the Perfect Vision, but that's really unlikely.

afaik Kaga was "exiled" until some years ago, after Echoes release so the chance that Kaga could well be integrated or had been asked for the FE4 remake, and perhaps being a reason why it hasn't been released yet, is something I see as likely. Also I pray that whoever at Nintendo won't hold a grudge against Kaga for like roughly 25 years of him "letting go of his child".
Aka all we gotta do is wait and see. I do look forward to see if Kaga is being named or part of the team again, also because I dunno excrements on how Vestaria Saga, Kaga's new series, has been doing and if he wants to get back to Fire Emblem in some shape or form.

    • @mcihay246
      @mcihay246 Před 11 měsíci +3

Accidental pairs would be easily solved by adding an option to visit the Augury to confirm a lovers pairing.
For example, could let Silvia have a boost of love points with Lewyn from her conversation with Erinys in Chapter 4. But it doesn't ensure she's Lewyn's lover without first confirming it within an Augury. Giving control to the player.
A second benefit of this, is that this makes it incredibly easy to have your chosen substitutes. Especially without having to get anyone killed.

I think an option to "regroup" after seizing a castle would help a lot so slower and faraway units could catch up. I would envision that feature as similar to starting a new chapter in other games, with the ability of selecting where to place your units and options to buy weapons and items. Of course this would need to be optional so if veterans want to keep the experience as it was originally, they could, while not making more casual/modern players feel alienated.

Yeah. Maybe the option to regroup could cost like 1000 gold per unit sent to the newly conquered castle. It still seems pretty powerful though so maybe require a unit with B rank staves in order to regroup your units at newly conquered castles.

Oh I think something similar is featured in Pokemblem-a sacred stones romhack themed after Pokémon FRLG.
Because Pokémon maps aren't designed with the idea of moving six units, 5 tiles at a time on a turn based system, there's a regroup command that lets you warp your entire party around a Pokémon, so long as you're outside enemy range.
Also in cities and towns you get a gigantic movement boost so you aren't really constrained by the turn based system, especially since there aren't enemies around for movement to be a meaningful gameplay limitation

    > Beating the game once should unlock Substitute Mode, where regardless of if you paired first gen units, the narration says that everyone died childless and you get all the substitute characters without having to resort to extreme chastity in the first half.
    > Controversial take: The remake should have reclassing. This is more directed at the second generation, since you are almost punished for pairing certain units together because their children end up stat-screwed or having weapons they can't use. However, if I were to make any gameplay changes, I would like units to have the Rescue commands, and the included penalties, from the GBA games as it would make it easier to transport non-mounted units across the maps and make them a bit more usable.

While it's true cavs are way stronger than infantry in general, I actually like that infantry units can't move as far with the huge maps. It makes it so you might want to send your cavs to objectives further away while your infantries are moving towards other nearer goals. To me it feels like another layer to make the characters play a bit more uniquely.

@@seven_8434 Actually, that's what I did in the game where objectives further away were taken care of by my mounted units and the closer ones by the infantry. However, in a lot of maps there is still a lot of space between from where you start to villages you have to save or castles you have to seize. Plus with the way Canto works in FE4, where you can move after you attack if you have movement remaining, I tend to just hit and run with a pack of mounted units and maybe leave one behind to seize. I just thought the Rescue command would help in carrying and dropping off the infantry to the closest objective faster or so you can help get you infantry back with your main group or a castle after you're done saving villages.

@@archivedvideos2249What can help with Infantry relevancy is to make the maps more dense in objectives, to where you absolutely need to split your armies.
As stated above, what can help is to have the mounted units deal with side objectives whilst the Infantry make their way to the next castle.
However, to improve upon this, have other castles release reinforcements earlier. Before they can be seized. An example of this existing in-game would be Castle Ulster/Alster deploying enemies to intercept Leif in Chapter 7. Can do this in other chapters also.

Great video. A couple of things to note though:
8:10 - There is the augury, which tells you the other unit with whom the character has the most love points with, with thresholds of 200, 300, 400, and 500 (married) points. Also, the "jealousy" mechanic is actually the result of a bug - something about a variable being uninitialized, resulting in the game using the wrong position to fetch unit info from. I forget, but there's a thread about it on Serenes Forest in the SNES section.
10:42 - Larcei is technically at least 17 years old as of the start of gen 2, because both of Ayra's children are sent off to Issach as per Ayra's lover convo with Lex in ch 5, and the gap between the end of ch 5 and the start of ch 6 is explicitly stated to be 17 years.
re: features to make gameplay smoother, Kaga was once asked in an interview about why he didn't include the auto movement thing from Gaiden, and he said that (paraphrasing) it didn't end up working very well? Or was it that it made bad moves? I forget, but either way, it wasn't useful for players. I imagine such a feature would actually be useful in a hypothetical remake though.
Off-topic but sort of related, we do get a bit of info regarding the progression of time in FE4. The prologue starts in 757, there's a 6 month gap between ch 2 and 3, a year gap between ch 3 and 4, and ch 5 starts in spring of 760. We do not know how long ch 5 takes though, before we get the 17 year gap between 5 and 6, and then all of gen 2 takes place in one year. In any case, we can generally presume the younger sibling of a gen 1 mother to be ~16 as of the start of gen 2, with some... temporal oddities (ie. Coirpre).

tbh I'm all for having some gameplay changes in an FE4 remake. As a game, Echoes was faithful to a fault with the main criticism from people being its unengaging map design, exactly as it was in Gaiden. If they were to remake FE4, making changes such as having trading be more practical than selling and rebuying items or reworking the way the pursuit and critical skills work would only improve the game that it is building off of.

The best route is to fully modernize the battle system. Expand even the skill system to incorporate some elements from recent games. Also weapons that didnt exist like knives, shields, etc. Add rescue, a weapon weight balance system (not sure if CON stat or not).

Biggest potential issue to an FE4 Remake is how the heck they plan on reconstructing the narrative. Being in the middle of a playthrough myself right now, FE4 as told in-game is pretty messy, and is mostly told to the player either in massive walls of text between chapters or in monologues by the villains off-camera. It's not unsalvageable, but it definitely suffers from a lot of weak delivery, even if it has some standout moments that are really solid.
Also, how much extra material and expanded world that's only hinted at in-game but never outright stated will they include? Because several in-game points don't make a ton of sense if you don't absorb the background, like I've recently seen an argument about "Why are they trying to make us feel sorry for the Loptyrians in generation 2 when they're the ones who started this mess?" Which really just comes down to them not fully understanding what the game is attempting to explain, how the decendants of Loptyr were persecuted for hundreds of years because of what their ancestor did, and many are only doing this in retaliation for the persecution they themselves had directly experienced. It's supposed to be a sympathetic, tragic arc of widespread abuse and villainy, but instead gets misunderstood by the game's fragmented and often entirely missable way of explaining things, such that major points of the plot get poorly received.
At the same time, I don't necessarily WANT them to go out of their way to explain all of this in more detail, because as said before the game already suffers from pacing with its reliance on massive text walls and villain monologues. So it's gonna be a tough road to navigate, which is probably one reason why we haven't seen a remake yet.

I would add some epilogues for the other countries like Verdane, Silesse and Agustria, that would unlock if Ares and Jamke and Lewyn's children survived the end of the game, you would get to see the wars happening there to reclaim the territories, just because Julius and Manfroy died doesn't mean the empire and the Loptous church dissapeared, this alongside a Miracle of Dahna level would take inspiration from the expanded material like the short stories (The Last of the Earth Dragons is really good)
As well as using Kaga's notes just like you said, epilogues about characters from gen 1 that let's you recruit them in gen 2, this would only unlock if those characters survived till the end of chapter 5 (Azelle, Lachesis and Tailtiu are my pick, the others i don't know but at least having Sigurd, Alec, Naoise, Arden, Midir, Jamke, Beowolf, Chulainn and Claud absolutely die in Belhalla is something i want to keep, Lex and Ayra are on a gray zone were i don't know what could be done with them but maybe turn them into stone as well, while Dew will get inspiration from another short story A Thief's Vow were he survives and after a convo with Edain decides to steal all the weapons from the gen 1 army to give to the kids but then dies in Aed Shrine going after Balmung)
Another thing i would add tho this may be more disputed, is add characters from Thracia, not a lot tho, only Saias, Mareeta, Sara and possibly Fergus, the rest either stayed to help in Thracia or went to other places like Misha and Karin going to Silesse to fight their war
Another thing is having extra lines of dialogue in plot important conversations that show up if certain characters are still alive, for example in the manga when Sigurd goes to save Lachesis, the Agustrian soldiers are afraid because the army of Grannvale AND Verdane appeared, if Jamke is alive this could be mentioned in the game, similarly other convos could reference certain characters or something if they are still alive, also give the subs more importance and have them by recrutable alongside the main units, like some secret events in certain villages and castles, as well as making them more unique personality and game wise, also do a cross between Echoes villague exploration and monastery open hub

A Genealogy remake would be pretty ambitious, even if they already have a template for it. Genealogy of the Holy War is one of, if not the largest, games in Fire Emblem history. Trying to shrink everything down or just make the game more modern would take a lot of time and effort that they may not have to get it done in time for release. Three Houses and Engage ran rather smoothly because of delays that allowed them to fine tune the game play in comparison to Nintendo's biggest money maker, Pokémon, which had two different main line games that had major bugs upon release that only got fixed with updates and DLC. What I think would be done would be to cut down the size of the maps from 64x64 tile maps to a more manageable size to streamline the battles and cut down on the time to fine tune the game but still make the story very immersive.

The way that you make the lover system more coherent is that you just change it to a modern support system. Gen 1 can have an S support system, and gen 2 can have a three houses style system where the supports cap at A and the characters pair up based off of some internal priority system. That way you can sneakily cut out the cousin pairings and the adult/teenager pairings.

Here's one thing I've suggested for years when discussion of an FE4 remake comes up: split the ginormous chapters and maps into several smaller chapters, or make all the capturable castles interactive home bases like they do with dungeons in Echoes, where you can handle support/Love points, see support convos, and get some plot and worldbuilding via something akin to the base conversations/info conversations in the Tellius.
Also, I disagree that the convoluted trading system has to he kept at all. It's just pure nostalgia.

As someone who has played neither game, I think that FE4's convoluted resource management is as core to its identity as magic costing health and dungeon crawling is to Gaiden's. It doesn't have to be translated 1:1 but I think veteran FE4 players should still find it familiar.

My argument is that it should be reworked so it's not clunky. Maybe there could be a communal gold bank similar to the pawnbroker, allowing for easier gold exchange. There are other parts of FE4 I think could be changed entirely, like Pursuit and Critical being skills that not everyone has, or effective weapons simply being a guaranteed crit.

    • @mcihay246
      @mcihay246 Před 11 měsíci +2

Splitting the chapters... I find to be a huge downgrade.
Huge chapters work with how you can deploy absolutely every character, because the map can hold them.
Then there are chapters that show story beats that are irrelevant to the immediate objective.
For example, how are you going to show Eldigan and his Cross Knights saving the home castle whilst your units are halfway across the map? Showing that he has your back?
How can smaller maps show that it's absolutely hopeless to save two beloved characters from an inevitable death, because your units are too far away?
How can smaller maps show Arion deploying a heck-ton of Dracoknights to attack all of your castles *at the same time*?
Honestly, whenever I see this argument of wanting smaller maps, fail to have seen what bigger maps were able to convey.
Lastly, about items not being able to be traded... Not to be rude, but this is an example of having to get better at item and gold management.
Personal gold and inventory gives consideration of who wants certain drops from bosses, who needs to visit a village for more gold because they're running out or want a certain item, it lets you play the Paragon Band game, makes it harder to pass on broken bands (Let's be real, they can be broken if easily traded) without planning for it, and it plays into careful consideration of who inherits what.
Also... It makes the Thieves one of the best units in the game due to how they're the only ones to bring a copious amounts of gold to where this issue of not being able to buy stuff irrelevant.

I would love it if they kept everything intact, taking into consideration just how much they changed in Engage. But I can't help it, I do feel weird about the age differences between the characters that are meant to be lovers. Weirdly enough, I don't think I care about the incest because it's meant to be medieval fantasy. But for it to be the truest medieval fantasy, it would need for the ages to be even more important, since marrying off your children to rich families was a thing you did to survive and have a (hopefully) better life.
This game isn't the first one to touch on sensitive topics but wathever happens when/if we get a remake, I hope they DO NOT change the aspects that make this specific game memorable. The story, characters, maps and inventory systems all have to remain as intact as possible. Because I'd hate it if, instead of removing a tickling minigame, they changed the characterization of every single playable unit in an "effort" of keeping the game kid friendly. Wathever they did to Engage scares me about the future of Fire Emblem, a game that would feel at home with a more mature art style and a motherfucking M18+ ESRB rating.

As someone who hates but one GBA FE Chapter - “Port of Badon” - for how obnoxious it can be to grind without endangering my units on a no-death run (and yes I always play Classic), I can immediately empathise with anyone who hates the arena even in a game I’ve yet to play.
On the FE4 storyline, if we cannot pair Sigurd and Deirdre with anyone else for pretty understandable reasons (Seliph needs to be born on track), can we at least give their relationship some proper development beyond the “love at first sight” triteness? Because I’ve gotten over wanting to change Seliph’s parentage so that I can ship him with Julia without feeling gross (such is life after all), but I would like to actually give a damn about his parents’ relationship for its own sake at least…)
On the matter of cut stuff, I don’t think you ever mentioned how Hilda was meant originally to be one of Arvis and Azelle’s half-siblings. Because not getting any of the exiled bastard children was definitely a waste, and if that’s not just a rumour… it would definitely be just a small little fun addition to the tangled web. Not because I want Hilda to be treated with an iota of a modicum of sympathy, but it would be intriguing; also in turn maybe we could get more of Ishtar and Ishtore (as they’re among the most sympathetic enemies in the second generation). Among other things…

The issue I see with integrating certain characters in FE4 is the delivery of FE5's story. Part of the impact of FE5 to me is going into it with the conception it is a midquel canonical to FE4. However, the subversion of that expectation is what makes it special to me in certain ways, with reveals that only hit as hard as they do because of how Fate works narratively in FE4, whereas FE5 adds more flexibility to that and subverts expectations tactfully.
That being said, the instruction manual and prep videos from the special box don't ever lie to you. It is explicit in saying that FE5 is a new holy war. But people don't internalize it the way that it is alluding to, which makes it very unique.
With how IS has been treating Jugdral in Heroes as of late, I worry that they may try to overcorrect certain narratives to make a cohesive timeline. But the part of FE4 and FE5 that stand out to me is that they are different games with different stories that do should not overwrite the other.
Either way though, I'm biased towards my own interpretation of FE4 and FE5's relationship, and I am not sure if Kaga ever said anything to clarify his stance on continuity before he left IS and was subsequently in lawsuits with Nintendo. Still, in the concept of "death of the author" there is no definitive answer in regards to their relation and I question how fans would react to Nintendo or IS making changes to canon. Shadows of Valentia was able to change as much as it did because they were working with a story that didn't expand much on characters in the game itself and many liberties could be used with the remake, but FE4 and FE5 are a different case.

The big maps on the other hand might be to annoying for new players. But they could solve this problem by cutting them into acts. Like having a campagne map where you have to divide your troops to the smaller maps. Rather than actualy moving them manually.
I think this would work wonders to simulate the big maps but have modern smaller maps. Especially if you make the player play on multiply maps at once to simulate the multi front battles.

I've said this on Reddit before and I get downvoted every time... but it stands to reason that the unique mechanics of FE4 will be removed in order to modernize it. Everyone will get pursuit and critical, and skills will be customizable or changeable. Regular trading will be added. Gold will be shared among the army. The maps will be broken up into parts instead of being as big as they are. The castles will be like the hubs of Three Houses and Engage. It will be much more like the rest of the series and like the newer games. There's little reason to believe otherwise. Plus, there will be new characters, as with all the other remakes, and new features that haven't been seen before.
People will say, "But Echoes is such a faithful remake! Why can't the FE4 one be too?" The answer is that Echoes isn't as faithful as you think. The maps and characters are the same, but that's about it. The story was changed, characters were added, every unit's growths were buffed, certain classes were nerfed, turnwheel was added, forging was added, promotion levels were lowered, spell lists were changed, rings were heavily nerfed, dungeons were completely overhauled. It's just a completely different game. So even the remake that everyone thinks is the most faithful changed so many things. It's only logical to believe the FE4 remake will do the same

Personally, I don't think I could handle an Echoes quality remake. I love Echoes but the maps are horrible and really detract from the overall experience.
The main two things that stick out to me are map size (and foot units in general) and weapon balance that need to change. Promoting units like Lachesis, Tiltyu, and even Ayra can be a challenge especially for newer players. Part of this is because chapter 2 and just how backtracky it is, but it makes them even more reliant on the arena. He’s stupid and a little reckless and that’s okay! It’s what I like about him most. On the other hand, Arvis is definitely a cruel man but he’d not entirely evil either. He says his brother means the world to him and he’s so kind to his family in general. The way Genealogy’s cast is characterized in FEH really worries me sometimes… They even made things up and brought them from seriously out of nowhere, like Annand’s crush on Lewyn, which straight up never existed in FE4… And I really hate it when they make it some kind of a personality trait for a woman to like a man. The Silvia and Erinys stuff are already annoying enough.

But midayle and azel having a crush on Aideen doesn't annoy you ?

@@mysmallnoman What point? That I shouldn’t be bothered by Erinys/Silvia’s squabbling and how their Personalities are almost butchered down only to Lewyn sometimes? Like I said, Midir and Azelle don’t fight over Edain or even interact, so I’m not bothered by them. Midir’s whole personality is liking Edain, yes, but he’s not a canon father to anybody and you don’t see him in a random event wondering who’s the father of her children and yelling at Azelle about it.

I hope they announce it soon, we haven't had a Fire Emblem game since Three Houses in 2019.
    Yup... not a single one.
