Ui an an igbo person from Eastern Nigeria, and I can say that it is really hard to see no justice given to the victims of the war till date, Hausa and Fulani massacred men women and children in pogroms across the North then Nigeria declared war on us, worse the Nigerian government hasn't uttered a word of apology. Tjhe most painful part is that the history concerning the war isnt even taught in schools probably because they want igbos to forget, but how am I supposed to forget that my grand father was butchered by Nigerian soldiers and my grandma gang raped? How am I supposed to get over the fact that I lost 5 uncle's to that war all because a section of the country was insecure and grew blood thirsty

Tribalism is deep rooted in Nigeria and I doubt if it can be eradicated in the near future. People votes along ethnic lines, you go for job interview and gets rejected because you're not from a particular tribe, as a matter there is a word like indigenes and non- indigenes in a state owned universities. Non- indigenes pay a higher tuition fees than the indigenes, you even gets discount from a market woman simply because you can her language.

In Nigeria, the aura of Nigerian civil war of 1967-70 is still hanged in the air, and tribalism was born out of that. This issue of tribalism can be eliminated gradually if we are sincere as Nigerians and uphold the notion of unity in diversity at high esteem.

Tribalism is one of Nigeria's biggest problems. For example, the 1st time I ever heard of Bola Tinubu, Nigeria's current president was in a newspaper interview in the 90's where he openly declared that he was 1st of all a Yoruba man before anything else. He's not alone. Many Nigerians think this way.

We can overcome tribalism by understanding our history, experiences and respecting our differences. We need to understand these are all systems designed to separate us because unity equals power and power is transformative . Understand we achieve more together and tribalisms primary objective is to divide us.

The reality is the British created Nigeria, the people living in Nigeria did not agree to live together.
    France is for French
Germany is for Germans etc .. Belgium has three main languages or ethnic groups, Dutch, French and another.
But Africa is being forced to live together with people who don’t have the same values . ..
the Fulani guy who spoke earlier saying Igbos don’t have a central government and they were fighting amongst themselves, that is a colonial watered history he is repeating, the Europeans in other to justify their invasion of African communities put out a false narrative that the Africans were killing one another.
The French/ English war lasted more than a century, War of Roses.
Nigeria is a country with different nations living together..
Imagine guys If USA has people from Afghanistan, Brazil , Saudi living in the same country speaking different languages and not practicing true federalism…. Tax payers sponsoring muslins going on hajj to Saudi… a Christian can be burnt alive in her dorm room and Nobody will be arrested… is that a country.

    • @mrnaija101
      @mrnaija101 Před 3 měsíci +4

@davidchiazor You are wrong. Which other country didn't Britain, France, spain or Portugal create? Of course Nigerians agreed to live together, otherwise there wouldn't have been those constitutional conferences in the 1950's leading upto independence on October 1st 1960. What else do you think was being discussed about among the leaders of each region and ethnic groups with the Colonial masters gathered in UK, if not how to live together? There was disagreements, if not independence would have come before 1960. Even Southern Cameroon voted to join French Cameroon in a plebiscite to leave Nigeria in 1961 October, after being part of Nigeria throughout years of British rule. What happened in Nigeria is that the military struck on January 15th 1966 in a bloody coup d'etat that brought about so many problems leading to counter coups and more problems like restructuring, nepotism, Tribalism, constitutional amendments etc.

I'm glad the youths are starting to discuss this sensitive issue of tribalism which exist not just in Nigeria but in many nations in Africa, although it seem to be worse in Nigeria as it is a weapon used mostly in politics by our corrupt leaders, at workplaces, in marriage, in education and even in church. I'm beginning to see many Igbo and Yoruba marriages online these days unlike back in the days when it is unheard of and hardly works due to parental pressures. It is a nice video. Most Americans thinks as Africa as a country and if not, see African countries as very united entities, which does not happen. People expect people inside the same african country to have similar cultural values, just because they share skin color, when not at all, very different in fact, most "Whatever" Americans are first americans and then "whatever" when they go outside USA, even if they feel deep roots to something, from the perception of everybody else, even if they do not like it, it is not like that.
I believe there is an "american black culture" towards most black people in america feel attached to and can relate in experiences, but that culture does not exist in Africa, because their experiences are not relatable to that, they had other completely different issues in their history. Fighting against colonialism is only a tiny part in their history and now with independence, in countries where there is black skin majority, issues are not about white vs black people like in USA, but about what my tribe did to your tribe in ancient history and about overcoming that and work together towards the future.

There's this idea I heard back in the days which I believe was made in other to make sure every tribes culture and traditions Should remain. Which was making sure that the first child should be of the father tribal name. And the second child should take the mother's name . But the issue is these idea is that the two children would have different cultures and traditions but there's always the possibility that these children can lean both cultures especially language. But culture can be thought in school to make sure they don't vanish . As the kids know both cultures because they have the abilities to learn many things

Disclaimer: This will be a very long comment.
I have an Igbo friend from Uni. days who was dating a Yoruba girl, the relationship started to get really serious after we graduated, and the girl even got pregnant. The parents of my friend knew about the relationship but didn't say much at first because i think they thought it was just a fling, but when my friend came to tell them that she was pregnant, and that she seems like the girl he would like to be with forever, his parents vehemently refused, saying that they won't allow their child get married to someone from the Yoruba tribe... It got so bad that my friend was depressed for a long time, and the girl even made a decision to abort the child since everything was going haywire and she didn't want to be a single mother; when they finally broke up, the girl literally told him not to ever speak to her again... This shit happened just 3 years ago.
So will Tribalism ever end in Nigeria?, at this point in my life, i've just come to conclusion that it's a No, especially not between the 3 "major" tribes, the toxic systemic tribalistic hate, oppression and segregation between the 3 "major" tribes is bewildering, and i called it "systemic" because an outsider will not immediately notice it, but it's very much there... If i'm not mistaken, Nigeria has the highest amount of different ethnic groups of any country in the world, what a lot of Nigerians do not understand is how to appreciate our similarities, and respect our differences.
I'm from a minority ethnic group from the South-South region, a region made up of almost completely minority ethnic groups (most minority ethnic groups do not have tribalistic biases between each other); my ethnic group accounts for just about 2 million of the Nigerian population... Even though my region has the vast majority of the Petroleum that literally fuels the Nigeria economy, my ethnic group, and most of the minority ethnic groups in this region has been heavily marginalised and exploited. And why can't the minority ethnic groups in the South-South region do anything about it you may ask?, Well, marginalisation based on population numbers, the chances of someone from a minority ethnic group being in a high place of power is very low, so you mostly only see politicians from the 3 "major" ethnic groups holding the very powerful positions in the government... So it's not surprising to hear that only once in Nigeria's history has an individual from a minority ethnic group ever ruled the country, and the crazy thing was that he wasn't even elected in, that would be basically impossible; the former President died, and since he was the Vice, he automatically took over.
The deep rooted tribalism in Nigeria will never make this country succeed as one in the long run, the fact is the country doesn't have long anymore as a unit, and the split will be more than people even anticipate, because every region will completely want out; from the Republic Of Biafra in the South-East, to the Republic of Niger-Delta in the South-South, to Oduduwa, and Arewa, everybody will want out. In fact, a lot of people who didn't want out before, are now calling for a separation; for example, some Northern leaders now want out, and the North used to the biggest opposition against a Nigerian separation.

Nigeria can never be one progressive nation. Previous generation went to war to unite Nigeria which led to deaths of at least 6 million Igbos. Even though they won the war but failed to create a united and progressive Nigeria. There is a need to reconfigure all African nations created by Europeans. Africa needs a more monoethnic nations that will inspire nationalism and make it possible to punish corrupt politicians. Nigerian is massive, 500 African tribes living around the source of River Niger. It has always been tense and full of energy, I believe friction is bound to happen in such a place within tribes, what we can do is manage it, educate more people. You need to understand every group has a nationalistic view, some of these tribes could be countries or kingdoms on their own as it was far back. So remnants of history is still around. Some people feel disgruntled, some people also feel they could better on their own and many also want to stay together cus we have also forged a global identity

It’s normal for people to be idealistic about eradicating vices and prejudices rooted in tribalism until they are at the receiving end of it. The young people here ended up arguing at some point where they differ. The solution is not to live in denial but to face reality and focus on areas of common interest. You don’t have to apologise for your tribe or culture, just be smart enough to know that weaponising it does not only make life difficult for others, it makes you vulnerable. At the end of the day, a safe environment, infrastructure, food security, healthcare, education, clean water, stable electricity or lack of these things has got no tribe attached to it. Citizens or leaders who understand and focus on these things regardless of the reality of our diversity are the smart ones who can change the system step by step. Someday, the minority with compassion and focus will become the majority.

Tribalism would end with a new generation that isn’t exposed to it or that are exposed quickly to the world and could care less about such things. Sadly when it’s about to be less or non existent, people stoke the flames, using it as a tool for political or material gains.

It's very difficult for a multi generational, westernized black person to understand tribialism. Even the concept of Pan-Africanism was created by Europeans who group all people on the continent as group of colonial subjects. They didn't respect the boundaries that existed before colonialism.
Any tribe that becomes Pan-Africanist is in danger of annihilation. Being a Pan-Africanist in Nigeria will actually make you more careless in how you move because the worst thing you can do is forget that other groups will always view an a tribe/ethnic group.

Colonialism killed the humanity in the various ethnic groups in Nigeria. The ethnic groups did not come together out of their own volition to live as it is today. The colonial powers handed over Nigeria at independence to a chosen ethnic group in badly structured Nigeria .Till date , Nigeria's census figures are a matter of conjecture . The Northern part of Nigeria has continued to exploit this undue advantage to the detriment of the Southern part of Nigeria .With a political system that is not autochthonous to the nation state called Nigeria , democracy in Nigeria has been turned into brigandry .With weak institutions of democracy like the judiciary , etc. the reward system tends to reflect ethnic bias. In Nigeria ,today, there is this feeling of mutual distrust .

For example, it's almost impossible from any tribe to marry a Fulani woman, even a Yoruba Muslim man is rejected. Igbo men do not find women from non-Eastern tribes attractive. But Igbo women are considered the attractive tribe of women in Nigeria. So, if a Yoruba man marries an Igbo women it's not a trade off because Igbo men are not interested in Yoruba women.

Never been to Nigeria but I absolutely know for a fact it's totall rubbish there is any country on earth with more than 10 languages maximum. Even that I doubt but I'll accept
What many call languages are dialects. In case of South Africa for instance I contend Zulu, ndebele, Swati and Xhosa are one language but with variations regionally
Using that language South Africa at most has maybe 2 native languages. Nguni, Sotho-tswana. Yet officially excluding English it's regarded it having 9 native languages because they then separate Xhosa and Zulu etc
For languages to be separate they should be very different eh English and Swahili

Nigeria is a zoo! The Hausa needs only 12 points to get to college, the Yoruba 30 and Igbo needs 250 points. my brother spent 4 years at home looking for cut off marks to be able to study medicine, is this not trabalism? Divide the zoo.

This is not true for Yoruba. Yorubaland has some of the best Universities in the country, the cut off marks are very high. You can only talk about Northern Nigeria where the people are being encouraged to go to school.
