Thank you for this! My ancestor owned a grist mill in Windsorville (now Windsor) in York County, Pennsylvania. Doing a genealogy project and this was a perfect way to learn how it was done back in the 1800's!

Excellent walk through of an entire Oliver Evans system. Evans held the third patent in the U.S.A. and was endorsed by George Washington who had his gristmill upgraded to an Evans system at Mt. Vernon. Many fortunes were founded on flour in the 1790's. Cool stuff.

Great video! It is fascinating to see how flour was produced before there were steam engines or electric power. Great that some aspects of maintenance (stone dressing and lubrication of the moving parts) was also included.
"Run of the mill" and "Nose to the Grind Stone" two saying's that I used all my life and never knew where they originated from. Thank you so much for sharing this video for I've never seen a Grist Mill before and I now feel almost like I've been to one in person.

Im working on restoring a 1776 grist mill which may be the oldest in the united states you can look it up by typing in klingerstown pennsylvania mill and a page called mahantango heritage will pop up The mill is located along the mahantango creek and uses the pine creek for back up if the mahantango goes dry

The "Original wheel" would have been mounted on the piston pump as a combination pulley speed reduction from the motor on the ground by the wheel, to the wheel shaft, then gear speed reduction to the pump. it would have been interesting to look for name plate data on the motors.
Trying to find a video about the old gold rush day grist mill north of the bay area ? The only one I've seen on it , was from the California Gold series, but so far nothing on CZcams. In fact any old tech mill, saw or grist or whatever, I'd like to know about. So feel free to enlighten me . thanks in advance !

i hope more people take the time to learn the trade from these old timers, keep the old ways alive just in case we need it some day.
They have many events at the mill, I live nearby. They have a corn roast in August and a Micro brew festival in September. You can tour the mill.
