I'm still in my 20s but people have always said that I dress like an "old woman" so watching your videos has really helped me to start considering what I value in my personal style and how I can marry together my young-ish age and my love for more classic, structured, pieces that a lot of people my age don't consider trendy. Thank you Audrey for all the work you do!

when I was 20 I was told I was not feminine enough! I learned to wear "masculine looking" clothes and add some feminine touches (that I like!) like jewellery, scarves, belts, bags and I am completely happy with my style...

I also had the same problem in my 20s. I was always criticised for my matured dressing sense and even worse I was compared with my mother in law how her dress ups look more young-ish and not mine. I have now gained the confidence to present myself the way I want and ignore what others say or think or how they want to see me.

I am also in my twenties, and I love a style based on the 1950s. I feel that because I am so young, people around me think it's kind of "cool" to dress so vintage, because I can "get away with it". But I have been a bit worried that as I age, my style will age me faster. Because in a few years I don't have that juxtaposition of a "young" person in an "old-fashioned" style. This video is a step in learning to be ok with that. Vintage styles is something I'm passionate about, and I don't see that going away any time soon.

My mom was a real Southern Belle. She wore beautiful hats and tied ribbons or scarves on them to match her outfit. She always had on her red lipstick and as her curly hair turned white she was more stunning than ever. Her clothes always fit just right and heads turned when she walked into a room. She kept it up until she passed away a year and a half ago at age 90.

Thank you for this video. As an 82 year old senior, a classic dresser I decided to go gray with my hair when I was turning 80. I’m so glad I did. Inside I don’t feel my age and sometimes have to stop myself from feeling much younger. However, always positive and loving travel, I met a man (my age) who has many similar attributes as myself. He’s brought so much joy to my life and vice versa. Who says life is dull and boring at 80. We don’t.

I think the only rule that applies here is one that is the same regardless of age: choose one area to reveal at a time. If you’re going sleeveless or accenting the décolletage, wear something less revealing on your legs. If your legs will be the main attraction, wear something with more coverage on top (but it doesn’t have to be matronly; a long-sleeve off-the-shoulder top would be great).
Putting all the merchandise on the showroom floor at once devalues it, imho.

    • @lindsaytoussaint
      @lindsaytoussaint Před 2 lety +8

@@llamasugar5478 devalues it to who? Myself I dress conservatively but I applaud folks who wear whatever, regardless of rules insisting a certain percentage of us should be covered so we maintain our so-called value or taste. Bah! If being seen lowers anyone’s value it should be the looker not the seen.

A long time friend’s grandmother said she NEVER wanted to dress her age. She always wore very tasteful clothes, but she rocked above the knee dresses and wedge heels every summer I saw her until the day she died. That woman’s playful spirit showed through in her clothes and she never let herself get “old and stuffy”. Tell your wife, as long as it’s tasteful & if she loves the way she feels in it, ROCK IT BABE!

I am thankful that I have lived long enough to begin to shed the fears and pressures of dressing for others. Every outfit tells our story, however long.
I am keen to see people shifting to this view of fashion where we are not marketing ourselves but using clothes as a way to express the uniqueness of our experience and our soul.

If I put something on and make a face when I look in the mirror, I take it off and put it in the donation box that lives in my closet. The only thing I've given up is very high heels because they no longer feel comfortable. I constantly need to remind myself that life is not a race and that I am robbing myself of happiness by subjecting my mind to this kind of thoughts. I'm 49 now. When I was a teen, my mom had a stylist "do my colors". The stylist draped different colored fabrics over my shirt and had me look in a mirror. She showed me how some colors can bring out nice highlights in your own natural skin tone, while others highlight flaws, like blemishes or dark circles under the eyes. She gave me a color wheel and a pocket sized book of sample fabrics to take with me when I went shopping. It was very helpful in determining which colors I should wear near my face, and which colors to avoid.

I LOVED this video. I'm 23 and since I was a teenager I've always loved a classic look, like button downs and blazers - I like looking smart and it works for my face and body, I think. But my mother has never supported me with this because I should "enjoy the body I have while I'm young" and wear young people things like crop tops and "cooler" styles. I think those things are fine and I'm not opposed to a crop top, but I've always resented her telling me I was mad for wanting to dress a certain way. I also saw and continue to see it as dressing for the life I want, not the one I have. This past year I've been making so much progress with identifying my personal style that I've started buying things that I actually love and fit my vision of me and it feels so good. This video has made me think about it consciously and I feel propelled to truly start dressing for myself. Thank you so much, Audrey 💗💗💗

I find this bit about blazers amusing. I recently found pictures from my first and second birthday of me rockin' first, a classic box pleated skirt and soft sweater, and second a similar skirt and blazer blazer combo with white piping. Then a little Chanel style slubbed wool suit with hat when I was seven and at twelve a pink box-pleated skirt with matching cropped, floral blazer in pink. (The other photos were black and white.) They were adorable. I've never ended my love affair with skirts and blazers.

Audrey, this is without a doubt the best video of yours. I absolutely loved it. I watched it twice and will watch it many more times. Your perspective on age appropriate dressing was spot on. I am 65 years young and recently started wearing dresses and skirts. It was out of my comfort zone at first, but now I’m truly enjoying it. After discovering “slip shorts” I am wearing dresses and skirts at least 3 days a week. I’m excited each morning to try something new. I especially enjoy skirts with sneakers. Thank you for your point of view on this subject. You are such a refreshing change of pace! I really appreciate all your hard work.

This is such an encouraging video, Audrey! To tell the truth I was expecting a set of rules that you adhere to and it was *such* a breath of fresh air to hear you use such freedom of intuition! I love your advice!! You are so wise.
I am a mom of young kids in my early 30s and what I love about dressing my age is how I began discovering my personal style (despite running after little kids and changing diapers!)
I hated how “frumpy” my wardrobe had gotten (and how frumpy moms tend to dress) and I wanted to change that about myself. I wasn’t happy, I was depressed and felt like a hot mess and like I could barely function. I wanted to show up to my life like the woman I aspired to be: loving, patient, kind, and elegant. And my clothes were clashing with who I wanted to be! Since what I wore was one of the *few* things I could control, I resolved to begin getting dressed in a way that gave me self-respect and dignity.
I’ve been able to thrift and buy second hand clothing and it has been so helpful help me identify what I love and don’t love. Truly, sticking with a color palette has been huge in eliminating buyer’s remorse. And it turns out, everything that I admired when I was a teenager, looking through clothing magazines at my grandmother’s house, is exactly what I love today. I loved seeing women wearing classic Safari style shirtdress. I found a tan one at Old Navy when I was about 17 and I wore it ALL the time. It just took me over 15 years to realize that you CAN dress the way that you love.
I remember being about 15 years old and my eyes going wide and my breath catching when I saw a picture of a classy woman wearing a Ralph Lauren style military blazer, with equestrian buttons running down the front, a white/cream colored Ruffle shirt underneath, and neutral slim trousers tucked into knee high boots. THAT is how I would dress one day if I could, I thought. Years came and went, I mostly wore scrubs for work, then became a mom and my personal style went drown the drain, and I kind of lost myself.
Now, I have been on a journey to reconnect myself with what I always innately knew that I loved. A Collared shirtdress, a silk scarf, a bit of equestrian flair; I’m just so happy to have the opportunity now to honor the dreams of that young girl of fifteen when she wished she could wear classy, elegant outfits, with neutral colors and utilize layers and vests, and wear those riding style boots!
🥰 I also feel that I am showing my young kids what it looks like when a woman respects herself and honors her body. 💕

Thank you Audrey, as always your videos are full of well thought out and communicated tips. I’m 49 and what I love the most about my age is the comfort with who I am and confidence in dressing for me (rather than others). I eliminated all synthetic fabrics from my wardrobe (especially polyester, not that there is anything wrong with it except at my age, this fabric makes hot flashes feel that much worse!), my hair is natural grey and I consciously selected a color palette that works with great (thank you for those tips), comfortable yet chic pieces in natural fabrics that work with my minimalist lifestyle. I love everything in my closet and getting dressed is my morning “zen”

What a great philosophy, Audrey! I love your videos. I’m 43 and have reduced my wardrobe considerably because I am done playing and now just want lasting quality. So I spend a little more for a classic and I find it lasts years and years. Which is what I did in my 20s too but never realized I was doing it! And yes, people said I too dressed “older” or dressed up too much and too often. Amazing how comments can derail a person’s confidence. But I’m done with that! Life is too short. Dress in a way that makes you feel good and makes you feel like you!

I'm 27, and I am at this really cool crossroads where for the first time in my life I describe myself as a woman, not a girl, and for the first time I'm starting to have this real affection for my body and this freedom with it. A comfort in my own skin. And what this equates to is that I'm young enough to wear a crop top and show half an inch of skin over my high waisted pants when I'm wearing casual clothes on the weekend, in celebration of this feeling :P I'm also closing on my first year of working in my first career job post grad-school, I built a colour scheme and stuck to it when I first bought workwear pieces, and I was amazed at how confident I felt through the year and how impactful it was to be comfortable and happy in the colours and styles I was wearing. I didn't worry so much about what to wear, I also bought significantly less random pieces because I had a structure to stick to.

However, I WILL say that as we age we can’t get away with wearing cheaper clothes, products or make up - everything does get a little bit more expensive.

A woman can end up getting a reputation like "that crazy cat lady" or "the witchy woman down the street." I enjoy the fact that I can dress in a more sophisticated way now that I'm a senior and it looks right. I’m in my mid-40s and am going through earlier than average peri-menopause so, honestly, I’m struggling with my body image a bit. But I do have a more relaxed attitude towards myself and care less about what other people think; I’m less concerned about trends although I do pay attention because I love fashion. A topic I think that’s related to this one is dressing for your lifestyle. Many of us at one time have collected or made clothes for our ideal selves or a fantasy lifestyle which is far from practical! For example, I like to sew and I’m always attracted to pretty dresses and wanting to make them out of delicate fabric and/or silk and I finally realized that I had a closet full of clothes I never wear. So then I wrote down the activities I actually do and places I actually go. I started creating Pinterest boards of women gardening or working on flower farm who at the same time looked very stylish (because I spend a lot of time gardening!). I also started to sew more pretty nightgowns and robes because I spend a lot of time wearing those too. 😅 I would love to know your take on this: transitioning from shopping for your fantasy self to your real self whilst still looking and feeling put together. Maybe others would also find this topic helpful to explore?

I totally understand you about the menopause. I was 38 when I started going through it (not peri-menopausal, but actual, real menopause), and found the symptoms accompanying it making me very sef-conscious. Then, I sat down and had a proper chat with myself. The conclusion was that I wasn't going to change anything about how I dress, except for going for more breathable materials and a wee wider cuts for the first two years because of the hot flashes. Now that I am through that (what a relief!), and turned 43, I went back to my original style. But still wearing looser cuts as well, because I discovered I actually quite enjoyed them.
Bravo for recognising your ideal self vs your real self, and dressing accordingly. Wishing you all the best. 🖤

I'm 65 and I'm an Autumn season, but your advice transcends all seasons and allows me to insert any of my own muted colors. My favorite pieces right now would be a wide leg Palazzo pant and tank top... comfortable and timeless. Thanks for all the inspiration and guidance.

Thank you for a wonderful video, Audrey; your quiet, cultured demeanor paired with your content is a joy to watch and so relaxing. I'm 53 and what I like best about my age is that I am comfortable being me. People will make comments that I am so "dressed up" and that no longer bothers me, it is what makes me feel good. I do my hair and make-up, put on a dress, and wear perfume just to stay home and do my household chores. It bring me happiness and joy!

Thanks so much for this, I especially appreciate the still pictures you incorporated of real women without the overfilled cheekbones and overplump lips we see on so many insta pictures. Nothing against those things but I think lovely young women are using them s little too early and often. I’m over 50 and am loving my closet, color palette and the ability to spend on a few really nice things. I stick to classics, solids and neutrals and accent with scarves. I add statement costume jewelry from my grandmother’s roaring twenties collection to give my understated clothes a funky spin.

I am 50 (51 in October). I do work outside the home but it's a casual office. I dress for comfort, but I like to look put together. I recently bought blazers because of your videos. I love the look of a blazer with t-shirts, button-ups, and/or casual tops paired with jeans and ankle boots or flats. I'm not much into wearing heels any longer. I also do not spend as much time on my make-up as I did when I was younger (teenager of the 80's...make-up was everything back then) and I find it refreshing to be able to do that and still look put together. Also, I'm in the process of re-configuring my wardrobe (again because of your videos). It was time I simplified my closest. Best part, the ladies in my family are benefiting from my clean out. Thank you for sharing advice and tips.

(Wife on husband’s account). In my 20s, I discovered clothes and the joy of dressing in a way that reflects my personality and shape/color/etc. In my 30s, I married and had 3 kids; just this past year I turned 40 and (now that my body is my own again) I’ve been trying to discover myself and my style again. My time and energy are stretched thin, but I’m making an effort to dress in a way that makes me feel comfortable without being sloppy, and stylish without feeling high maintenance. And my jewelry is undergoing a change, too. Anyway, I really appreciate this video because in so many other places we’re told how we “should” dress, but I’m just not into what they’re pushing. Thank you for allowing me to feel confident in my choices no matter what my age; I appreciate it very much! :-)

I only really started to be comfortable and dress for myself once I hit 30. I never thought much about what I wore before that, but it's given me such a freedom of expression and genuine excitement every day. I love wearing oversized clothes, jeans and more tailored pieces like blazers. I am inspired by Korean fashion a lot and sometimes that gets me odd looks here in Ireland :)) but I've come to think of it as "they stare because i'm just too cool :))

So many of us get tired of having younger people take virtually everything we want to wear off our list as we get older (even if we er uh were that judgemental ourselves when we were younger). I love your perspective on this because as I've gotten older I have a better sense of my own style and well loved things I've had for decades that I still love to wear. So yay! Slightly fitted tops, polos or sweaters mostly navy with dashes of peach jade green or turquoise scarves, bags, head scarves and feature earrings as my only jewellery. This allows for simplicity and flexibility from 2” heels to boots, and flats. All figured out with the help of beautiful Audrey and The Curated Closet. Love your inspiration Audrey 🥰

Thank you for showing so many chic older women! I am 65 years old, petite, and fit. When I was younger I exercised to try to change my shape into whatever was the current fad. At 65, I exercise to feel strong and healthy. I love that change! I may have wrinkles and in places I have saggy skin, but I am still here to enjoy life! What a blessing. In terms of dressing, I have had years to learn what looks good on me and what I feel best in, but every now and then I step out of my comfort zone. I recently bought a jumpsuit and go so many compliments on it!

At 59, what's interesting is that I've sort of gone back to some aspects of how I dressed in my 20's. I just remember how much I loved drama and dressing to make a statement--especially going out to downtown NY clubs in the early 80's. If you weren't a star, you'd better dress like you were on stage for the doormen to let you in! As I got older (and stopped hanging out lol) I moved away from that. Now I'm looking again for statement/investment pieces to mix with staples. I want to shine again. :)

Katrina, if I may offer you my opinion, why not ask for referrals from the best-dressed women you know? They will likely know someone good in your area. then tell the tailor what you would like to change in the piece and let them come up with the solution. It is money very well spent and you will keep your pieces longer because of how much better you feel when you wear them.

Look for a tailor in your area if you can’t get a personal referral from a friend, amd go with some articles of clothing that aren’t super expensive the first time. Put the clothes on and ask the tailor what they think. They are professionals and will be able to figure out what the garment needs in order to fit you in the way that you tell them you want it to fit. They know what to do. They are magic!

Thank you for this lovely video. Your empowering message and wonderful fashion show are inspiring! Like you, at an early age, my mom introduced me to the magic of a tailor. She also taught me about high quality (slow fashion) clothing as an investment. Now this "vintage" style is appreciated and coveted, and so much better for the environment. I also love to mix beautiful vintage items with more recent purchases, and always with good quality shoes. Sadly I do buy some fast fashion items, largely for sports, though they get well used. Yes, wear what you want, though mature women look best in good quality vs fast fashion (don't wear your daughter's clothes). During this pandemic, I've been raising my spirits by continuing to rotate my vintage items while working online -- I took my inspiration from your classy and beautiful approach. Cheers

Ayushi Ghosh I am so glad you are dressing the way you like. Personally, I love sarees too, and wear them to almost all formal occasions. I am still in my late teens so, I do not have a lot of sarees, but you can bet that I am buying a whole lot of them when I am able to get a job. Anyways, I think sarees are eternally graceful and elegant piece of clothing that suit every body shape, height and occasion. Definitely one of the easiest clothing to dress up or down. No matter what anyone says, I am never getting rid of my love for sarees and in my opinion, anyone who cannot appreciate the beauty of sarees doesn’t really have a taste in clothing. They do not have to like to wear it, but they can certainly appreciate the elegance of sarees.

My two cents: Dress for your self, not for others. If you deeply dislike the clothing your husband suggests, that should be the end of it. I love that Audrey herself noted in the video that she shed the thinking of dressing up as how others think she should, and it made her much happier. Do what makes you happy.

Thank you for the lovely video, Audrey. I am 57 and your dressing tips always work really well for me. That being said, in the last year, there is something important that I have learned. Women my age are always told to use clothes to "hide" parts of their body that they "don't like". Last year, I decided to stop focusing on hiding my arms, belly, etc., and instead, I make it a habit to strip down in front of the mirror and really look at my whole body every day, and apply what I know from ballet barre exercises to improve posture, alignment, strength exercises, and range of motion to activate those parts of my body and give them the TLC they need. As a result, I look for elegant clothes (no gym wear!) that also allow me to move, stretch and walk as much as possible during the day, like well-cut pants with a little stretch, chic leather flats, and midi skirts that show off the waist but also have enough leg room that I can close my office door, drop down on the floor and do some stretches when I feel like it. Dressing the body I have while thinking about using movement, alignment and posture to improve it is much, much more fun than hiding and self-shaming. :)
