Kyoraku honestly represents the ushering in of the next generation of the soul society imo. He still holds the previous ideals of yamaji close while bringing the new ones in brought by Ichigo and friends. I love how he's a balance for everyone in this Arc

He’s a good replacement for Yama in my book. He’s not a bloodthirsty warlord and he actually shows some accountability for the Soul society’s mistakes.
The old way of doing things was: “If it stinks, put a lid on it.”
The soul reapers had a habit of committing horrible crimes against other people and then acting like it never happened.

My favorite decision from him as captain commander is actually in CFYOW when he tells Ginjo they're gonna open up the seireitei walls and welcome anyone from rukongai who wants to go in. Kyoraku was definitely the best developed character during the TYBW arc in my opinion. I was a big fan of his style of leadership where his ideology was victory at all costs. I always thought that Yamamoto was needlessly self righteous. It was always ironic to me how Yamamoto wanted to preserve the status quo of the Soul Society, yet as we know there was/is a lot of corruption behind the scenes, and he was also the leader of the Gotei 13 when they were ruthless and bloodthirsty. But yet he refused to have his left arm healed which arguably caused his death. Whereas Kyoraku has 0 qualms about sacrificing Unohana to bring out Zaraki’s potential, and turning to Aizen to help as well. Kyoraku was an incredible leader who understands that war isn’t about honor. War is about who’s left standing.

I think the best part about Kyoraku being the captain commander is the fact that he's willing to listen to other people's concerns and is also at the same time willing to do whatever it takes. One of the biggest problems I always had with Yamamoto was that when anybody even attempted to confront him about literally anything he basically called them children and saw it as disrespectful. Kyoraku listened and had a dialog with everybody. Like the whole thing with Aizen. He was like I hear all of your concerns and trust me I don't like this either BUT we need his power. That's all there is to it. Nobody likes this situation but we do what is necessary because we're the Gotei 13. He honestly reminds me of one of the bosses I had at a previous job. I really loved his character progression in the TYBW arc, one of the best written characters in the series and I love his Bankai.
But to be honest him and Nanao should've lost the fight against Lile Barro. Ukitake should be the one giving his life to save them, first using his Bankai then using Mimihagi-sama. The conclusion of Lile Barro's fight was one of the worst moments in Bleach in my opinion and it was easily fixable. I wish Kubo could change that in the anime.

    • @MaxIronsThird
      @MaxIronsThird Před 2 lety +2

      100%
Ukitake gets a middle finger in the TYBW arc, him sacrificing himself to save Shunsui would've been a nice send off to the character, then after he dies, the whole Mimihage thing could happen, but that would be completely separate from him as a character.
Only characters that got the short end of the stick as much as Ukitake were Unohana, Uryuu and the Visards.
Meanwhile Byakuya(should've stayed dead), Renji and Rukia have way to much screen time and get some ridiculous boost.
Kenpachi and Hitsugaya also get super powerful, but they don't hog so much screen time, actually i think Kenpachi should've done much more since he's probably the strongest person in the Gotei 13 at this point, i wish he was the one to defeat Gerard Valkyrie, maybe with the help of Toshiro and Hirako, instead of having a Yammi 2.0 with that ridiculous fight.

    - Ukitake was too ill and very often absent, and that was really serious position to take
    - Zaraki too savage und unhinged and he wouldn't give up his "Kenpachi" title
    - Mayuri is on the other hand too fu... up and twisted to care for the others

I think it's great (and perhaps a little self insert) that Kubo showed the strengths and weaknesses in pride.
Pride can give us strength to tackle something larger or harder than we ever had to before. But, pride is a truly absolute double edged sword, especially in a leader. A leader, more than anyone else, must be keenly aware that pride can push you forward, but also hold you back. When a leader lets their pride become more important than performance, efficiency, product or outcome, it is holding you back.
I'm sure he knew people would say "Yamamoto would never have had to do that, he could have handled it himself." It speaks a lot of a leader to be able to admit that he can't just solve it all on his own if he had to. There are so many leaders worried more about what they should do, and how it will look, than what they can do, and how it will effect the outcome.
The truly sad thing is that people that choose to do things because their pride can't let them do otherwise simply look like the failures they are in the end anyway and what they were trying to protect was destroyed all the same.

The only one I felt Kubo could've addressed better was investing in Zaraki as a war asset.
I felt that whole thing came across as a net loss, because I never had the sense that Soul Society had any intel on Gremmy to know only someone like Zaraki could take him down and then allowing Unohana's death felt wholly unjustified given the circumstances.

A lot of people sleep on Shunsui because throughout the whole second invasion he wasn’t fighting. But those people don’t realize that he couldn’t move from his location. Firstly, due to the fact that he was just appointed as the new Captain Commander. Secondly, he is the general of the shinigami who’s the one giving all the commands from the top. He is no longer a foot soldier who’s expendable. And lastly, he was in so many words ordered not to leave his position by higher ups because how I said in my first reason, he’s the Cpt Commander now he had to give the orders or else it would turn to a whole chicken with its head cut off situation. But later they will actually see how smart he really is when it comes to his leadership skills.

Kyoraku’s decision making was one of the reasons that the heroes won against the Quincy. He saw what happened when the honor-bound, posturing Gotei were steamrolled by an enemy that wants nothing more than their destruction. War isn’t glamorous or glorious, it’s dirty, and only victory matters. Everything, at least in Kyoraku’s mind, is a means to achieve that victory. He doesn’t care if he has to make a deal with former enemies, risk his allies or sacrifice himself if it means that the Gotei wins.
