22:15 -- Oh man, it is sooooooooooooo nice to see an operation like that that OPENLY AND EXPLICITLY understand that technology fails and they are FULLY PREPARED to deal with it. The list of places that need to have a serious meeting with these guys is near infinite.

Tim, Thanks for sharing this video. I have a VTS story of my own. I was sailing my 28’ Hunter in the Buttermilk at 2 am. I was contacted on 13 by a tug boat captain on channel 13 and asked to turn to channel 14 and contact VTS. They informed me of a large tow coming down the east river. I told them I was taking in my sail, turning on the motor and heading back to my home port at Liberty Landing Marina. It was nice to know that they are there and will contact civilian vessels to help keep us safe as well.
Again, Thanks for sharing. Great video.

Another old Navy guy here (Hospital Corpsman). As my shipmate said, Bravo Zulu Tim. I wish I had access to videos like these back about 15 years ago when I was running a repair barge on The Lake of the Ozarks. New York Harbor is a bit more intense 😉 but the principles are the same. Knowing the weather , your surroundings, equipment and as with here, a dammed up river, water levels. I can relate to using the wind to help the job ( pushing docks ). And we have Coasties here as well 😎
Love this channel Tim. This is a great find 😎

This video is so much better than anything a TV station could do, mainly because it's produced by someone who intimately knows how all this works. A TV station would have a producer google "how does the Coast Guard handle NYC harbor traffic" then send some kid to shoot the story with a list of questions they probably don't remotely understand.

Wow. I remember back in the day's when I worked at 1 NY Plaza up on the 41 floor. My office window faced Gov Island with a great view of the big Radar mast for VTS and the building which was there home. I also had my two VHF marine radios on the desk tuned to the two freq. Scanners were not good receivers back then in the early 70's. It was also a sad time when I watched the Move of VTS off of Gov. Island. So today in Aug 2021 I am just finding out where there new home is. Not so new now. LOL This was such a way cool look at the behind the Harbor communications and safety scenes. Thank you Tim, and a very big Thank you to all you men and women Coast Guard and Civilians who watch our harbor. Great Job 24/7 365

TU for the tour, Tim. USCG is unique in the US Services in cycling officers (except specialists like pilots or legal) thru all facets of the service: Icebreakers, lightships, rescue, testing & development, admin, logistics, VTS, even PR. I had two different T&D Officers on that lighthouse automation in the 60's, which I've mentioned. Little wonder why USCG gets more funding every year than they request. JL

In the early 2000s I was on a flight, and my seat mate was a pilot being ferried to a plane in our destination. I had a hand held GPS, a Garmin, and was tracking the flight in real time. The pilot said that gizmo was better than what they flew with in the cockpit, and he was going to get one for his flight bag, as a backup...He also showed the Rand McNalley street map atlas he carried so he could point out interesting sights to his passengers.

Ahoy Captain Tim. ⚓I'm fairly new to your channel and kept hearing you talk about this place. This was worth watching! As I've said before in my comments on other videos I know a few people around Baltimore who work for port operations that I've met through my antique furniture restoration business. One of them is a father son team who work traffic control out of their basement in Towson. I met them probably 20 or 25 years ago while on an estimate for "Mom". I never gave it much thought about how traffic was handled until then. I was telling a another friend of mine who's father was a bay pilot so I took him along one day with permission of course. Wow, what a interesting conversation those two had. Chip was in training to relieve his dad when he retired but unfortunately that didn't pan out. Well I could ramble on all day about this subject so I'll cut it short but I gotta say this sure is an interesting field to work in. I suppose it wasn't in my cards to land a job working on and around boats, just restoring them. That's a satisfying job in it's own right.

Talking about a cadence on the radio, and old school nomenclature reminded me of when I drove a taxi. Like with mariners and VTS, the cab drivers and dispatchers had different things - when we didn't have anyone in our cab, we were "red" when we had someone we were "green" - dispatch had physical colors of the opposite. The city is/was divided into chunks that are numbered - but over the radio, the old school terms for some places are still used at times - like the international airport is "the field" and downtown is "baker" . . I don't know the history of why those places have those names.
OMG, that magnetic map is awesome! A few years back, the cab company I worked for had some massive issue with the dispatch software, and needed to change, which took a lot of time. We were operating for dispatches via radio exclusively (it had been, and is again, computer) They had to keep track of what cabs were where in the city - if they were empty (red) had passengers (green) or were on their way to pick someone up - and the order of who had been in a particular zone the longest to know who got first dibs at a dispatch in that zone. I can't imagine what the stress level would be for VTS to go old school!!

I love seeing this sort of thing,. Not necessarilary from a viewers point of view, but from TimBs & the VTS operators.
All too often we have to deal with people remotely, but only after having met them in their workplace can we truly understand how & why they work the way they do.
Then we can much better understand what they can see, what they need to know, their pressures, etc and thus get a better handle on the situation behind any message communicated.

Thanks for taking us inside the traffic control center. I had your channel come up for a suggestion for me most likely because I follow What's going on with Shipping. One thing from me as a suggestion, I thought that you were not letting the other person (Bissonnette) finish talking, you would ask him to explain something and he would start taking but then after a second or two you would start taking over him,not sure if it was excitement or just something that you do on your tug being in charge. Perhaps you need to practice and do like you would when you're communicating on the radio. Another interesting and informative video. Thank you Tim

And yes, I was surprised that you got as much information out of them that you did,and it was nice to see them actually opening up and not playing the High Security card. And I can only imagine how much work is involved with Your artistic outlet ,or however it was that you said your boss said it. And even more involved when you go out filming and doing interviews and thinking how it is from our the viewers perspective while operating cameras etc.
You did a fine job,and I will be coming back and watching more of your channel. Thank you sir.
