  • On Tuesday, June 14 from noon to 1:00 pm ET, Habitat for Humanity will host a panel, +You: Closing the racial homeownership gap in the U.S., exploring the deep-seated inequities in America’s housing market - and the steps necessary to create more inclusive zoning, lending and appraisal practices. While inclusive homeownership has always been the heart of Habitat’s mission, the Advancing Black Homeownership Initiative is centered on the launch of three nationwide programs aimed at bringing people together to create equitable housing opportunities for all.
This conversation is part of an ongoing series about housing hosted by Habitat for Humanity. The +You series brings together experts from across the U.S. and around the world to discuss how housing intersects and interacts with other areas of societal concern including public health, racial equity, faith and the economy.

My question of confusion is how all of these houses and apartments are being build in Charlotte,NC and it’s people including myself that has been on housing waiting list for o er nine years. All these houses and apartments being put up but housing waiting list is nine years long and homeless is at an all time high here. The homeless rate is higher now than it was during Covid. Then the city is allowing people to buy land in and around the already established black neighborhoods and build these big apartment buildings. Example the Greenville Community my mom own her home in Greenville she is 75 years old. First in the early 2,000 they came out the woodwork giving offers for homes then raising the rent up this started what I call chaos they knew from the housing market that some people were having trouble with their mortgage. Make a long story short they buy the house raise the rent some home owners that was firm at not selling their homes now have to see unfamiliar faces every 12 months maybe because the rent was high or landlord’s not keeping their property up. It has been very few times that I have witnessed someone renew their lease at one of the houses that was sold. Then the Music Factory I refer to this situation Smoking You Out Your House now I felt like noncolored people were being funny and thought they was being smart. Well if they want sell us their house we will make it uncomfortable for the older people with the clubs traffic coming through the neighborhood all times of night leaving the Music Factory let’s not mention I have sat on the porch and can clearly hear the words coming out of the performers mouth as late as 11:30-12:00am. Weekdays or weekends it didn’t matter. Just pitiful. Now it’s let me put as many people in their safe place I can. Two big property projects are under construction right now. In my community where I grew up it was always colored people only time you would see a noncolored person would be in the day time in their work vehicle MAYBE I never saw noncolored people in my community at night. Now they everywhere riding bikes be in big groups riding their electric boards all in the middle of the street I be nervous all the time when I see them. Tonight I saw a noncolored man running/jogging in the middle of the street after 9:30 pm. Yeap I got nervous starting thinking why he running around here this time of night he could have went to the gym got on the treadmill. Is he a peeping Tom. Is he trying to snatch one of the kids from over here. He made me uncomfortable. Why noncolored people see something wrong with us running/ jogging riding our bikes in their neighborhood but we don’t have any reason to feel the same way they do. Its not ok, I don’t like it. I apologize if I offended anyone but I’m not apologizing for how I feel or what I said. 🗣️I’m reminded every morning I wake up that I’m privileged too🫶🏽

I thank all of you for your attention and time on this matter that has been and is still ongoing. I’m from Charlotte, N.C. born and raised. In 2012 I saw the thing they call gentrification coming in slowly. First let me comment to your question of concern. I believe we can start closing the racial homeownership gap with teaching our people
    .Time Management
    .Self Control
    .Budgeting/Saving
    .Mental Health
    .Multiple streams of Income
Joe Biden needs to come to Charlotte,N.C. and stop the rental taxes here it’s ridiculous and disrespectful. Just last year a Realtor Company wanted me to pay over 6,000 to move into a 1,700 a month rental property. My credit was over a 700 but they still wanted me to pay 1,700x2 security deposit. And before moving in they wanted me to pay a move out fee of 800.00 where they would pay a clean up crew to clean up if you decided not to renew your lease along with some other weird fees. Once I was approved for my lease they demanded that I pay the first months rent within the 24 hours of my approval ok so I did and yes I knew it was non refundable. Me feeling like my credit score was some what good I never thought I would have to pay a 3,400 security deposit 😮once I got that squared away they came with the move out fee including other fee that would have included me paying over 6,000 for a rental property not even a rent to own property 😢. Yes the property is in the North Charlotte Community that is in the gentrification stage. Long story short I fought for the rental property for months because silly me showed my two little one there new back yard, it was under 10 minutes from my boys school on Graham St. my daughters daycare in the Old Cherry neighborhood they now call Metropolitan Area and 10 minutes from my job on Sharon Amity Rd.
