Maybe it’s just me but I feel Patek over the recent years have lost their way from their timeless and elegant designs with a move towards trends.
I totally agree. I can appreciate Patek's for quality craftsmanship but to be honest the more current designs and colourways are not to my taste. So many other superb watches can be purchased for a fraction of the price.
Patek trades on exclusivity and meticulous craftsmanship. They still make spectacular watches. Makers of mechanical watches are very much aware the clientele for watches such as a traditional, dress watch such as the Calatrava is a dying breed to sone extent. These companies go where the money is.
Define recent years? I’d suggest that’s simply post Quartz Crisis Patek, along with everyone else to a large extent. The Golden Age of the 40s through the 60’s is long gone.
Just look at the catalogues of the Holy Trinity, throw in Universal Geneve- throw in Omega for giggles and look at what they offered during those three decades alone. It’s long gone. AP in particular among the Holy Three has strayed away from elegant dress watches. Patek, you can still very much buy an elegant spare Calatrava. vacheron Constantin, same thing, they have plenty of elegant watches within their catalogue and you’re welcome to buy. They aren’t the focus of their marketing nor do they get much attention from social media. They do offer them. My biggest gripe would be proportions, they lack in that department to a vintage piece and you aren’t going to see much in the way of engine turned dials.
Look at so idk media - even a channel like this, focused on the finer things in life, it’s all pretty much focused on high end tool watches. That’s simply where the interest is at the moment. I do think dressier, or perhaps simply less tool watches inspired watches are making inroads, but the needle has barely moved, until that happens, not much will change.
Great vid Ash. The VC's were the pick of this year's W&W releases for me.
That Vacheron watch really has an elegant classy feeling look to it and yet looks so modern at the same time.
I have fallen out of love with watches over the past few years. Whilst I am not ready to agree with my wife’s opinion on all watches that they just tell the time, I must admit that I am coming round to the conclusion that you buy one (or two) and you have every watch that you need.
I've been trying to keep my wardrobe somewhat minimal so right now I only use 1 watch and that is a Timex Easy Reader. It is affordable but also classy and not too flashy so I am enjoying it so far and believe it was a good deal. Thanks again for the video. Anymore clothing videos soon?
What aspect of the Timex makes it classy for you?
I just googled this watch and have to agree. It is classic, classy and clear. Timex tend to fill you with a sense of nostalgia too because they were often our first watch as children. I think you've made an excellent choice within the affordable watch category.
Agreed. An extremely traditional watch at price point which everyone can afford. Comes with the added benefit from never suffering anxiety when wearing it in the city.
@@herbtube7824 I can't tell if you're being sincere or rude but my apologies. I enjoy how nice it looks and the price obviously. I don't really care for a super expensive Rolex and would also be just as fine with a Seiko for minimalism. I appreciate your response. By the way I had a few pocket watches but donated them since they are outdated these days. I wish I would've kept them though as they are historical pieces. To the others who responded I also appreciate your input.
@@Manuel421 no intention to be rude… I was interested in the appeal that the Timex watch has to you. Thanks for your response.
I love the new black and gray GMT Rolex! It’s fantastic to see them taking risk and pushing the envelope of horology. Kudos to the greatest watch brand on earth
Good to see you Cap Chap
Completely agree with you re the GMT Vacheron. I saw it in person and had a chance to try it on. Stunning and I love it. Only issue was its price - daunting😂😂😂
I think you meant *dial for the 1908 ice blue guilloche design, not the bezel
Congratulations on the Cartier.
Looking forward to a video on your new Santos!
This is the first W&W I can remember where my overall reaction was "Meh" ... I didn't feel inclined at all to save and spend on anything I saw .... they phoned it in this year (either that or it was priced at a ludicrous level)
The platinum 1908 is stunning. Gorgeous dial. The BB58 Coke GMT is going to be incredibly popular. Cheers!
Thanks for doing this Ash, a great view
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm a Rolex militant but I like the brand after this release, if only because it pissed off the haters so much.
I always preferred Tudor watch. And congratulations on your purchase of Cartier Watch. It looks very stylish and modern watch.
Go on Ash, sell most of your Rolex watches and hunt down one of those VC overseas dual times in the next 12 months or so. I bet you’d save a fair bit going slightly used in due course too. Tell me this thought hasn’t already crossed your mind!?
I've got a gold Rolex given to me by my dad. I find that wearing a gold watch is not always an easy thing to do. You need to be in a particular mood to wear that kind of watch.
Nice overview of what you like Ash, thank you. Look forward to the review of your Cartier! Starlight
Well done on the Santos!! Surprised you didn’t choose the Reverso… you will one day 😜. Enjoy the Cartier!
Talking of so called big watches, I often wear my Seiko 'Arnie'. And you know, people shouldn't be put of by 44/45 mm watches - another big one that springs to mind is the Marathon Jumbo (lovely watches, they also do a large and a medium). Really if your wrists are medium to large (not necessarily large) you will get used to the watch, in my opinion just follow the basic rules - if the lugs go over the top/bottom of your wrist then it's probably a bit big for you and always try the watch on at the Jewler's first (even if you don't buy it there).
A few interesting models from the Holy Trinity of VC, Cartier and Panerai this year.
Good choice on the Santos and I’m looking forward to your review in due course. Personally I’m attracted to their quartz model as all my other watches are automatic and Cartier do excellent quartz watches.
Congratulations on your purchase of the Cartier Santos. I’ve had my eye on that watch for a while myself. That one and the Santos Dumont.
Good choice!
Great content. Thanks Ash.
My pleasure!
I personally don't get wrist watches, but pocket watches are where it's at.
If you sell your Rolexes and Cartier you can probably afford that beautiful Vacheron.
Other than the brown Cartier none of these releases do anything. Then again, I'm a chap more interested in the micro brand space. In fact, my watch of choice for every day wear is a Reverie Diver in red with a 12-hour bezel. The value for money for that watch is NUTS. Also, everyone who sees that watch on me asks me about it, or asks if they can buy it off me. I am curious though, if a watch brand asked you to come up with some watches in non-traditional colours like red, what would you choose?
I rather like burnt orange
@@TheChapsGuide I love that colour. I think you might like Straton as a brand. They offer the burnt orange in most of their models. Speaking of burnt orange I have a top coat that was called that colour. It’s more of a deep cinnamon brown. I adore it and I get many compliments on it. An oddball dial colour I’d love to see though? Plum!
A Doxa sub 200 orange 🍊 one of my favorite
@@ronaldpoppe3774 Doxa are super cool!
@@ColinLack 👍😎
Solid Yellow Gold Sky Dweller on Jubilee is my pick as the winner, will look forward to picking mines up when it hits the gray market.
Did you ever try getting them direct from the authorised dealer ie the waiting list? I know for the stainless steel sports that can end up being cheaper then getting it from the grey market.
Some interesting offerings by Zenith and LU Chopard but a lot of insanely priced glittering baubles for celebs, footballers and wannabes. Who the hell can wear that solid gold DeepSea out and about without a security team? The champagne went warm and flat at this year’s W&W.
Tudor becoming the watches I want to buy. My bb 41 burgundy is excellent. Gonna get, what I’m calling, a cherry coke Tudor as soon as it’s available on the 5 link bracelet. The fake rivets are a no go for me on their 3 link.
I'm surprised they didn't fix the supercase on the GMT this year. They did in 2020 for the Sub.
The Rolex 1908 is my favorite can't afford it. I find myself drifting more towards dress watches that are in the 36mm to 38mm range. The Tudor Black Bay GMT excellent the GMT snow flake should have been red in my opinion. love the Vacheron Constantine can't afford it so not even an option for me. Been a little jaded recently on watches. Guess I have all I want. Except I would like an Omega constellation Globemaster with Blue pie pan dile. Maybe some day. Thanks for the video. Best regards Ron
100% agree about VC winning W&W this year. Anyone of those 3 green variants would be an absolute dream. But the BB 58 GMT more in my price range...
That black and grey GMT master 2 should be called nacht und nebel (night and fog). Soon San Martin or Pagani Design will havd that colourinv in their homages.
Sacrilege! Only joking, I have one in my collection. Why the heck not.
Omega....that's all
In summary, Rolex ‘meh!’ - best effort that blue 1908. The GMT is dull, the Deepsea Gold totally mental! The winners were IWC with their Portugesers and Tudor with the coke GMT 39mm. And that’s about it! By the way, i heard that the blue dial on the 1908 is stamped, not machined!
Should have worn your new Cartier 👍🏼👍🏼
The 1908 from Rolex is amazing!
The new monochrome BB41 is gonna to fly off the shelves at 1/2 the price of a Submariner! 3 bracelet options too!
Buyer’s remorse guaranteed with the BB41…
Congratulations on the new Cartier!
Thank you sir.
Oh dear Ash. Did you just buy a santos medium! You and I are kindred spirits (I got mine in Jan 24). I can’t wait for your video on the Cartier.
I did. It’s a cracker!!
@@TheChapsGuide oh in that case I better dig a bit harder on your channel.
when are you going to introduce your new aquiery then, the briefly mentioned Cartier, dear Ash?
Some of us chaps have significant others. I think knowing what Tudor has for the ladies would be of interest to us so entangled.
The Tudor ladies range is nothing special. I would look at Cartier or Piaget. For a more modern look try the underrated Rado.
The Cartier that run anti-clockwise appeals to the contrarian in me... but would need a lot of overtime to afford it!
Ash, we always had a Rolex dealer here but it was rather low key. Stuffed into the back of a jewellery store so you didn't really take note unless you went inside the mini-mall. Today however I am walking the street and see a three window display of a Rolex showroom on street view for everyone to see. More in my price range is I fond out a local men's store stocks Allen Edmonds and has done so for a number of years without me knowing.
Don’t forget mechanical watches need ‘regular’ cleaning / servicing. I took my Rolex Oyster, bought new in 1986, into the Rolex service centre this week. I’ve done so several times since owning it, fortunately their main UK centre is a short drive from here. The bill, including a new clasp, £850.
Ash, congratulations on the Santos. Effectively, the first Pilot’s Watch created. Well done sir on your excellent choice🫡🙏
Cheers James.
Opening comment you mentioned big brands and fell into trap of Tudor, which is ranked 17th with less sales than Hermes. Only in CZcams is Tudor a big hitter. Tudor monochromed last years model which is a sub clone, and a Coke GMT homage, neither anything new.
Another solid gold gold video Ash, excuse the pun!
The modern day level of hype always far exceeds the reality of new Rolex releases, some of which I imagine is from grey dealers hoping to increase demand for their stock.
Rolex released pretty much what I'd expect. Imagine if the Tudor colour & metal releases of the past few years wore Rolex badges, the internet would melt.
I like the look of the 1908 but for that money I'd prefer the newly released rose gold Cartier Santos large on alligator, with a pair of rose gold Love cufflinks and a damn good holiday.
I'm visiting New Bond Street later this week and will try and have a look at the new brown dial large Santos, I'm rather taken with your new acquisition!
Kind regards,
Rob.
It has been a delight so far.
Got to say I really like the Tudor black bay in the monochrome, yes it is very Rolex submariner but it’s also very Tudor submariner of old and at half the price of a Rolex sub - far more near what I and many others could ever afford, plus METAS certified, so you know it’s going to be more accurate than a Rolex sub, it just sings out to me…but then boring monochromatic watches usually do 😂.
There are some very attractive watches featured here, all but the cheapest of them well above my pay grade.
Would it be possible to do a video on the day-to-day experience of owning a, however small, collection of quality watches? Suggested topics includes aspects like "hidden costs", e.g. insurance, regular services, etc. Safety concerns, like where to keep your collection: at home, in a safe, or in a bank valve? The risk of exposing your watches on social media. Wearing a desirable watch "in the open" with short or rolled up sleeves. At an airport: do you recommend wearing your watch on the wrist through security or take it off and put it on the plastic tray? Recommended travel cases for watches? Do you wind all your watches every other day or so to make sure they are functioning OK, or do you put them on a watch winder? Pros and cons of watch winders? Do you tend to wear your watches with more complications, like the GMT-Master II more often, because they are more of a nuisance to set? Accuracy issues: does your Rolex's keep time within the promised + - 2 seconds? Does professional watches with rotating bezels slip under the cuffs of your dress shirts or do they fray the cuffs prematurely? And so on, ... on the long and winding road to Chap Nirvana...
Thank you for this question, it asks many points, which I think many people are not aware of when lusting after a special watch. I will aim to make a video on this topic in the near future. Thanks again. Ash
@@TheChapsGuide Thanks Ash. Looking forward!
Guilloche is pronounced ghee losh, not ghee loshay. There is no acute accent on the letter e.
Who cares how big it looks fab gold wow

Nice easy listening...thank you 😊
The Rolex event IMHO was a non-event as you say! I must say that your watch 'virus' is mutating with the Santos purchase!? Or is it a unstoppable amount of money burning a hole in your pockets!
IMO they are all losers, except incredibly by TAG Heuer the silver panda glassbox is nice and the split second Monaco is also interesting
