Condor Greenland Axe Pathfinder Edition: My New Favorite! - Preparedmind101

  • Preparedmind101 and Will from Mantis Outdoors take a look at my new favorite woods axe, the Condor Greenland Pattern Axe, Pathfinder Edition. The special edition is only available through the Pathfinder School Store (www.thepathinderschoolllc.com) and features a longer handle then the regular version. It is beefy enough to handle the toughest tasks while still being a size that can be strapped to a pack.
    This is one of those axes that can hang with the more expensive ones but still be somewhat affordable (not to mention it has a nicer leather cover then the more expensive axes).
    Check out Dave Canterbury's review of it here: • Condor Greenland Axe P...

    Instead of electrical tape, try the inner tube of a bike tire... Great grip, still black, burns good in emergencies. I've been putting it on everything. Even my knife sheaths.

    Hello from Oklahoma! Good review. Thank you! This axe reminds me a lot of my Cold Steel Trail Boss. I've used it for several years now camping and at deer camp where it sees a lot of use. Never had a problem with it. Its still going strong. The cover for the condor looks top notch. My boys have a time with the over reach when splitting wood too. I wrapped the handle near the head with nylon rope and then a good tight wrap of Duct Tape. Good video. God Bless!

    Haven't read all the comments- sorry if I'm repeating someone else's words.
    When crosscutting, make your cut as wide as the log is thick. Making the channel too narrow will leave the tool unable to remove enough material to finish the buck. Keep safe, and enjoy what you do.

      Just discovered these guys ... From the viewpoint of someone that grew up in the bush, these fantasy woodsmen are always good for a grin. Best axe in the bush is an Iltis oxhead. No question. It's lighter and will slice off a 4 inch branch with one swing.

    • @SouperAsH
      @SouperAsH Před 3 lety

      @@paulmartin2586 I've been looking at the Ochsenkopf for a while... I figured they might be worth a try. Cheers for the confirmation, but let's not discount skilled hands and strong back, when taking that swing. Technique matters as much as tool quality. You've been at it a while, I reckon, and surely deserve a little credit for a cut like that.

  • @Foxer604
    @Foxer604 Před 8 lety

    Good eye with the pattern - it is actually a Hutson's bay pattern axe with the longer handle. Hudson's have about a 2 lb head of that shape and general taper, but they had 22 - 28 inch handles. The original condor version was too short to be considered a 'hudson's' - but with the longer handle it is pretty much in that pattern range now. Worked then and it works now, and it's hilarious dave would so quickly 'recreate' what wilderness people years ago realized was the best configuration.

  • @jimcboyett
    @jimcboyett Před 10 lety

    I purchased my axe about a year ago and did not get it from the pathfinder school and it still has the 23 inch handle. If you look at the user comments on amazon for the 2.25 pound head axe, it says that this one comes with the 23 inch handle now. The smaller one, the 1.5 pound head has the shorter 16 inch handle. Not sure what the price differences are between amazon and the pathfinder school, but thought I'd mention that.
    By the way, great axe! I love it. The 1045 steel in this axe is probably a little softer than the 1095 steel in the expensive axes and probably doesn't hold an edge as long, but it has worked fine for me.

  • @futuresonex
    @futuresonex Před 10 lety

    Great video Chris! I haven't use the Pathfinder version, but I used to have a standard Condor Greenland Pattern Axe that I got at a yard sale. The quality of the steel and the forging was excellent, especially for the price. The only reason I got rid of it is that the handle is just too darn short on that axe, way too short! It was more like a really heavy hatchet than a true axe. Dave's Pathfinder version fixed the problem though, and if I was in the market for a new axe I'd give that one a hard look.
    I probably wouldn't buy it though simply because right now I'm really enamored with Husqvarna axes. They're truly superb, and I really think that they're by far the best deal in the axe world. You get all that great Swedish quality for half the price, around $60 on Amazon for either the 26" Forest Axe or the 20" Carpenter's Axe!
    BTW, the fat handle is easily corrected with a draw knife or a spokeshave, some sand paper & a little boiled linseed oil!

    Chris, I have to agree about the quality versus the price. For a few dollars more you can get a much better steel and an axe made in the USA. I am referring to council tools axes, for example.
    Thank you for the video though, I saw Dave's video and it nice to see somebody else doing the same axe.

  • @joshsanford983
    @joshsanford983 Před 7 lety

    It look like a nice axe. It takes an edge easily because it's 1065 carbon steel (soft). Also Hudson Bay patterns look cool and old school, but under heavy use, tend to work loose. They work loose because there isn't much handle in the axe head.

    Love the condor products. Own 3 knives and am happy with them however, it seems to me the leather used for their sheaths is actually a "bonded" leather, not a full grain leather like many people thought, myself included. Still a good product for a sheath but I feel the distinction should be made. Im not a leather expert by any means and could be wrong but it may be worth looking into. I am willing to bet the sheaths that come with the higher priced GB or Wetterlings are made from a natural piece of leather not mechanically made from pressed leather bits. Could explain one reason Condor can keep their prices reasonable. Love the reviews Chris. Keep it up.

    I like the idea of buying the cheapest high end axe I can buy and making it more versatile. so what I would do buy the smallest ax I can get most of the time they come with a very short handle making the axe not very effective then I remove the handle and replace it with a longer one. I like all my gear as light and effective as it can be and am cheap so I may have more labor in a item than most. but my labor is free and getting the most out of a item for me is the goal. good video

On the other hand Council Tool has been in buisness for 129 years and supplied the axes for the United States Forrest Service for many years. I've used several single bit axes and hatchets to split kindling.
    I currently have a roofers hatchet that works great for splitting wood, pulling nails, and hammering the crap out of anything I need to hit. lol
    If you've buried the ax head, or even gotten a start, don't waste energy wrestling the log back off the ax.
    Pick the whole assembly up and slam it down again, and again, and again, just like driving a wedge.

    • @Foxer604
      @Foxer604 Před 8 lety +3

      +Bob Fornly I think you'll find it's the other way around. I do some reviews and have received test products for free, but i find that the sellers will ONLY give me products they actually think are really good to review. I usually manage to find a few flaws with any product but my reviews tend to be pretty positive too - because i'm not generally interested in reviewing junk. So every one of my reviews is 100 percent honest and people know they will be when they send stuff, and therefore they only tend to send stuff that they know is good.
      When i do buy my own stuff or acquire it elsewhere, if i find junk i generally am not really inspired to do a review on it. It takes a lot of time and money to do even simple youtube reviews (for me anyway) and i don't really want to waste it on crap. I'd rather talk about something that excited me so others can get in on it.
      So i wouldn't leap to the conclusion that if a reviewer is doing good reviews that they're in any way bias or not accurate - for some they might only do products that are 'good'.

      +russell lamkin It would be easier if people would consider the date of the video than for me to constantly track every product I've ever reviewed.

    I don't know why but I have this hangup about axes without ears. They just look like they will come loose sooner. Mike

      Axes have ears ?

    • @jeredsyn1964
      @jeredsyn1964 Před 10 lety

      If you're being serious yes, it's the steel that comes down on the sides like the Swedish axes.

      I like the ears of a Jersey pattern. They just add to to amount of wood to metal contact. More tricky to hang mind you.

  • @ryanhojun
    @ryanhojun Před 9 lety

    I don't understand how that metal ring on top will hold the axe head

    • @AmericanWilderness
      @AmericanWilderness Před 9 lety

      It pushes the wood out and wedges the axe head onto the handle.

    • @suilekelly
      @suilekelly Před 9 lety

      American Wilderness What it does is prevents the wooden wedge from flying out when splitting wood. You only have a harden edge on a axe.

    I've never really liked wood handle, I'm too sketched out that it'll eventually splinter/snap. I know any and every handle can break, I just feel better with a fiberglass mix or polypropylene handle

      @michaelstjohn6086 Před 10 lety +1

      I agree, you do get over it once you start putting new handles in though.

      Just buy an Estwing their handles are almost indestructible and they're only 40 bucks

      Michael Tarantolo or you could just buy a cheap axe or hatchet like I did when I went to an event (I can't remember what the event was) I bought a hatchet that is about 14 inches from the bottom of the handle to the top for only £5 and when I tested it I was amazing it keeps a super nice edge and so it means that with little effort I have cut many 4-even about 7 inch logs. Anyway the morale of my story is take a chance and you may be very pleasently surprised.

    I just have no desire to use that size of axe. It's either full size or a tomahawk for me. My big axe is a Kobalt 33" Hickory handle and it does me just fine, around the house. If I go camping or hiking, it's a tomahawk.

      Thanks. I like control and safety. I feel more prone to get fatigued with such a heavy short axe and that could cause me to get weary and miss my target and since I would be shifting around with the thing, I may not be in a good safe stance and take out my shin or ankle.
      With my 22" Cold Steel Pipe Hawk, I don't get fatigued and remain safety conscious of where my blade direction is and where my legs are, whether I am using it single handed or both.
      With a big axe, you may get fatigued, but you have defined stances because of using long swinging strokes. When you get fatigued with it , you just stop and go drink some water or something and come back a few minutes later for another round.
      Godspeed!
